<3> ((((((((((((( razvan^ )))))))))))))))) <4> can vhosts be done in win2k? <4> one ip ***igned via dhcp another ***ighned static one manualy entered on the same interface <3> i see <3> hi winkey <3> i'm not sure if any of my helpers is awake <3> if no replies try #computerhelp <3> wb RealFaux :)) <5> hi there, does anyone know how to make a diskless windows xp box? I have a computer that I think the hd is about to fail, and no money for now for a new hd... and I have plently of hd on this box... it's doable easilly with linux, but the familly like winxp :/ <3> hi A****aka <3> i'll find out <5> I searched in the past, but all what I saw was with thin client specially made for that <6> [chalcedony] :D <6> hey <3> hey :)) <3> OnEx|TO: are you in #windows ? <3> oops we ARE in #windows <6> :D <3> need new gl***es <6> im no acces in the channel :( <3> iknow .. have to wait till Razvan wakes up <6> :p <7> werd. <6> [X] Lo siento, tu acceso es insuficiente para ejecutar esta orden. <6> :( <7> A****aka, There are no Diskless ways to run Windows. Windows has a kernal (base program) that must already be extracted/runable. <7> The only diskless things that I can think of is like.... Ubuntu LIVE! <5> that's what I tought... but it's easy with any linux <7> Yeah. I just cant imagine seeing windows running diskless. If I ever seen that, I'd be VERY asaunished. <7> The kernel just isnt built for that kind of support. <5> nfs, tftp, nfs and custom kernel... some dhcpd options and it's done... <5> yeah <5> but I tought that there may be some loader... <7> Ubuntu LIVE is even easier than that, in most cases. <5> I doubt so <3> there is plenty of support for ubuntu <7> A****aka, The only thing I can think of would be to have an MSDOS image extracted on a CD, bootable, and windows 98 extracted as well. <7> That is as close as I can think of. and that's prolly not do'able. <5> you need nfs for the files transfert, tftpd for the kernel transfert, the dhcpd must say what to download and a kernel that support network boot and nfs swap <7> BUT, win98 would want to write to SOMETHING. So.... A CD would be read only, unless the windows kernel had a way to write-on-demand to the cd. which is very improbable. <5> win98 is doable <7> but how is windows going to make a pagefile, write to registry, or write to the many ini's? <7> cuz nothing lets windows modify CDRW on the fly like that. <5> you basically make a floppy image, that load a network driver, map C: as a network share and then start win98 <7> an hdd from another computer? <7> of course. <5> win98 would work in compatibility mode for the hd <5> yes <5> I have 600 gigs on this comp <7> I was ***uming you were dealing with NO HARDDISK <5> none on the remote comp, but I have one in this "server" <7> Well, That'd be your BEST bet. Map a drive, Use MSDOS networking stuff. <5> hmmm another question, I have a comp downstair at 50 feet of cat5 cable, and my cousin want to add a comp to my network.. which is 50 feet away from the comp downstair... would you run a 100' cable from this switch to the one in the basement? or from the one downstair put a new switch and run the second 50' to the new comp? <5> so win98 or linux... <5> I'ld go linux in that case :D <5> would be safer and faster probably <5> (they only listen to mp3 and browse the net) <7> With the wire/router situation.... I think it's really a personal preference. If you add a router, It'll be less wire to buy and you can add more nodes, BUT it is one extra component that could cause a problem one day. If you buy the wire, You wont have to buy a router and will be more direct of a connection. <7> So, It's really equally balanced. As far as performance, You'll get the same either way. <7> So, It's about customization. What YOU want. <7> err.....
<7> router=switch <7> I dunno why I am thinking routers. <7> lol <7> or not even a switch. a hub. <5> hmm 100' I think I will get <7> I like to bum my cat5e from the teleco or cableco <7> The telephone company used to give me 1500 feet every time I seen them. <7> lol <7> I could have LAN'ed the freakin` neighborhood. <7> Nah... More like the county. <7> I did have a 1250 foot line ran to a friends house. <7> That was odd. <5> lol <5> yeah, 85 meters limit by specs <5> which is in reality 170M reliable <7> I had to add an inline amplifier since I p***ed the threshhold. <5> and with a better cable you can get more... <5> yeah, that was probably the best way <7> There are usually 8 wires in CAT5. Orange and Orange/White - Green and Green/White <7> those are the only ones really used in a cat5. <7> So, I take the other two pair and hook them to the orange and green ones. So it makes each line alittle more thicker. <5> not good <7> wiring up two, two pairs of copper to make it more conductive rather. <7> Sure. There's no problem with that. <7> The other wires are NEVER used in computer networking. <7> only Orange and Orange/White - Green and Green/White <5> lower the resistance but mess with the propagation delay, will add echo.... <5> and <5> you change the cable characteristic, so you get more signal bouncing <7> Yeah, As I said, I had inline amps and magnetic filter. <7> Everything ran okay. <7> It did take engineering. I had a friend come over with a cable testing machine to measure all the specs of what the line could/would push. <7> We adjusted as needed, Kept a tight scan on the line for a bit. <7> My whole family builds cellphone towers. <7> So, I'm familiar with RF, Data, etc. <7> hehe <7> My cousins climb them. Uncle is foreman, and my brother is a datacenter tech/inspector. <7> I dont do anything cellphone involved. <7> you gotta start out climbing, and I have vertigo <7> lol <3> oh kewl Gohan :)) <3> --'--,-{@ --'--,-{@Intuitive@}-'--@}--'-- <7> hmm. RealFaux.... That's a cool nickname. <7> lol <5> the comp downstair piss me off, there is atleast 2 bad sectors that the hd refuse to correct <5> and scandisk don't see them <7> Hmmm.... Are you doing the detailed scan? <7> there's a name for it.... I cant remember what it's called <7> a sector scan I guess... <5> well, it's xp... <7> Oh, Yeah, XP doesnt have the sector scan. <7> Do you have a blank floppydisk? <5> well, I run on linux right now <5> found 3 files in bad sectors <5> the first was a mp3 that wasn't even supposed to be there <7> err.... You need to get a MS-DOS 6.22 bootdisk and run scandisk from there. <7> It will give you an option to do a detailed scan, or sector scan.... something like that. <5> the second was sonic stage optimised file... which only waste space.. <5> and the last was a file in the sp2 backup dir <5> yeah <5> but I'm using linux to force the hd to remap it <7> Yeah, U need to get the older scandisk, use the detailed/sector/whatever scan and write-out the bad sectors. <5> yeah <5> but I prefer my way :D <7> Indeed. <5> more painfull, but "cleaner" <7> I'm a FreeBSD person myself. <7> :) <7> I know linux too. If you know one, You know the other. <5> yeah, well, mainly <5> I was lost first when I went to a suse box... <5> I'm used to gentoo <5> with compiler installed and working <5> it was a pain to get suse to compile...
