<2> there ya go
<3> welcome aboard
<2> choo choo
<4> I have two computers, one is running winxp pro and the other is xp home. the xp pro box is named 'db' and is running an instance of sql server 2005 express. the name that is coming up in sql mgmt studio is db\sqlexpress. I am trying to connect to 'db' from the xp home box. I can see 'db' thru win file sharing, but can't connect using enterprise manager. i opened ports 1433 and 1434 on db and now the win firewall
<4> any suggestions on what to try now?
<4> my networking experience is very very limited
<4> (non-existent)
<3> I thought I heard that express doesn't allow network access
<5> To enhance security, SQL Server Express disables network connectivity for some new installations. Network connectivity using TCP/IP is not disabled if you are using SQL Server Enterprise, Standard, or Workgroup Edition, or if a previous installation of SQL Server is present. Named Pipes connectivity is available only for local connections unless a previous installation of SQL Server is present. For all installations, the shared memory pr
<5> google is your friend im_confused
<5> and by security m$ means their job security
<5> ;)
<4> nice, that never even occured to me. i've been screwing with windows settings for 3 hours

<5> I'm sure you have to pay for it
<4> thanks
<5> np
<5> btw I searched on google for mssql server express network connectivity
<6> Hey. Just wondering, at work, we have a firewall which makes the difference of viewing webpages, ie if i view www.page.com at home, i see that content, at work i see nothing, basically the website is stored locally. This is fine, as i can get it to work on our servers, and test at home, but its a bit of a pain. I was wondering if i can set something up at home, so i can connect to my home pc from work and view the page?
<3> talk with the admin to get it working?
<6> erm pmsl, i am the admin
<6> or supposed to be
<3> can't configure the firewall to work as you need?
<6> basically, the dude who knew the stuff, went, and ive taken over, but have never looked at those kind of things, so am learning all about that
<6> BrainMast would that be the only way? i was thinking about like remote desktop, but that seems a bit ott?
<3> that will work fine
<3> but if the firewall does weird stuff to webpages I wouldn't except it would allow remote connections to home ;)
<3> expect
<6> well, i can remote desktop from mypc at work to the server fine, so it may be worth a try. what would i have to set up on my home pc then?
<3> well the firewall is usually on the edge so it wouldn't effect the internal lan, otherwise yeah you need to enable it at home (***uming 2k/xp pro), add your user to the allow list, and setup any routers at home if needed
<4> well enabling network support on sql server express 2005 was harder than it should have been
<4> i'm out. dinner time. thanks again for the help
<2> mmm waffles
<2> is there any way to bind an application to a nic? say I have two nics and I only want thunderbird to use eth2 and firefox to use eth1. neither has a built in capability to bind to an ip.
<7> why would you want to do that
<2> for fun and profit :)
<2> one nic has a vpn to europe and the other is clear to the local comcast
<2> I don't really want everything going over the vpn. email doesn't need to for example
<7> that is a good reason.
<7> im stumped on this one. what about getting a cisco router and then getting it with 3 ethernet ports.
<7> that way you could route ip addres's that you know to the vpn and all the others to the other nic
<7> not nic
<7> ethernet
<7> may work
<2> maybe editing the routing table would do it. I was hoping to avoid it
<8> I have a pc and a laptop on a wireless network and they can both access the internet fine but they can't ping each other
<8> and I'm trying to create a direct connection between the two
<8> can anyone help?
<8> 192.168.0.4 isn't really my ip is it?
<9> that's your LAN address.
<9> disable your firewalls.
<10> and in the router setup make sure client-client connections are not blocked
<8> how can I get into my router to enable client-client connections?
<10> http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/research/recording_head/pr/PerpendicularAnimation.html
<5> yeah
<11> I am working on it
<11> new routerware
<5> ah
<11> I may have to leave for a bit if it keeps up :(
<5> hey now
<11> feh

<11> my network has gone APE****
<11> I must be blocking ping pong

<14> hi
<15> anyone alive ?
<15> anyone alive here ?
<16> hi
<16> is it normal to have a high response time (refering to ping the router) if the outside connection is lost?
<9> please don't repeat.
<16> k
<16> it is so strange, my net connection is sometimes lost, then I'm not sure if my msg reached to the channel or not :(
<9> you shouldn't have trouble pinging the router's LAN address
<16> by the way, in a lan of 20 computers and a single simple router, what should be the router's ping response time?
<16> I would guess that is should be <10ms if not <1ms am I right?
<9> pretty much.
<16> how can I demonstrate that the router is deffect?
<16> is there any easy way?
<16> (maybe any software?)
<17> do you have any way to check cpu load on the router?
<9> you're not connected to the router via a hub, are you?
<16> no, but there is a hub in the lan near by the router
<9> is it actually a hub or is it a switch?
<16> a hub :(
<9> well, that's not helping matters for the systems connected to the hub. not the source of your problems, though. w

<9> what kind of router is it?
<17> hmm
<16> is there any way for me to see the active sessions on my IIS server? (sessions/website)
