<0> though there is very little who have shell access to our servers
<1> I want users to learn that if you use rm, the samn files are GONE! No second chances, no recycle bin. Be careful :)
<0> who here deals with php, need opinions on 5.1.2 and some definition of a pconnect to mysql
<2> persistent connection?
<2> heh
<3> so how do i configure a firewall in gentoo?
<1> no idea
<1> there's probably a /etc/rc-firewall script or something
<4> anybody can help me how to up/configure the NTP (Network Time Protocol) Server in Linux (fedora core 5) ?
<5> wot is the prob with NTP
<6> any ideas on how to get an ambit cable modem working through usb? linux detects the modem but it won't connect
<4> i want to setup an NTP server in my FC5 server so that all the other workstations in the network will be synchronizing its time to this NTP server
<3> use ethernet
<6> ?
<3> the modem has a ethernet jack?
<5> i use com for that

<3> or just a usb jack
<5> Rocknolds: just run the service
<5> Rocknolds: pls elaborate the prob
<5> you dont know how to run or it cannot run?
<4> i dont knw how to run the NTP server in FC5
<4> anybody can help me how to up/configure the NTP (Network Time Protocol) Server in Linux (fedora core 5) ?

<3> 01:0a.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy MIDI/Game port (rev 04) how do i know what that is in /dev?
<7> phillyshreds: what about /dev/joy ?
<3> nope
<7> hm. Got a joystick plugged in? Got its name? Got that module loaded?
<8> Rocknolds get the ntp package or rpm, and edit the ntp.conf file (if needed) iirc fedora has some default servers, then type 'ntsysv' i think it can run as a service on boot
<0> chkconfig ntpd on
<0> but there is some configuration changes you have to make for it to run as a time server not a time sync
<0> i dont konw what they are
<4> is time sync mention same as ntp client?
<0> yes
<0> it runs as a daemon and syncs the machine its on against a defined time server
<4> okay
<0> how to get it to run as a time server i'm not sure
<4> chkconfig ntpd on <-- what does this do?
<4> ScoT, where can i get it? is it not included in the FC5 you recommended to me?
<8> yum
<0> yum install ntp or yum install ntpd
<0> can't remember which
<3> i don't know if the port is even installed though
<3> phillyshreds it's on my soundcard
<8> i recommended to you ?
<4> yeah... if you can still remember, you have been guiding me since the scratch.. :-) and im glad to tell you that im learning fast
<8> oh good going then Rocknolds
<8> :D
<4> i started asking about live cd and u recommended knoppix
<8> so you went a full HD install after trying knoppix, good good
<4> yeah yeah and im using FC5
<8> its good to try a few different distro's to see what you prefer, and also a learning curve
<4> okay i can do that maybe later
<4> what destro you hve in your host?
<8> debian
<4> have seen a lot of that while in google researching for linux
<4> do you guys do also cisco stuffs? switches, routers?
<9> hey, is this Romanian?
<8> was the first one i ever used, back a few years ago, then redhat 6 or 6.2
<9> echo "Cautam ip-urile vulnerabile"
<9> echo "Distractie placuta la scan!!!"
<4> its nice to know the stories and history...it made me see the big view and remove the confusions regarding a lot of destros :)
<3> nothing
<8> yeah bronaugh_ its ro, Searching for the vulnerable ips , Have fun scanning
<10> Redragon^ you awake?
<0> nope LOL
<3> ok i'm trying to emerged a masked file
<0> i've been trying to sleep all day since work kept me up all damn night :)
<3> and even though i added the keywords in /etc/portage/package.keywords
<10> been thinking today on how best to impliment a whitelist into sshmon
<3> it still says masked
<0> dont forget timed blockes and variable failures to block hehe
<10> yea. my host.trashcan format is this
<0> gonna do it with a switch or a file?
<10> ip start_time end_time day_of_week
<10> was thinking a file.
<10> then you could have multiple entries. switch could get long and tedious

<10> i.e.
<10> #TEST BLOCK
<10> #192.168.1.200 17:00 23:59 Mon,Tue,Wed,Thu,Fri,Sat,Sun
<0> how about this
<0> a ssh.allow and ssh.deny file :)
<10> that works as well.
<10> run script on startup and it automagicaly blocks stuff from deny
<10> but it's nto really just ssh, it's the whole damn box
<0> yea i use the DROP for everything not just the ssh port
<9> ScoT: thanks
<9> Redragon^: so this is fun... examining some nasty code dropped on friend's box.
<9> http://www.cycom.se/dl/gwee
<9> you might be interested in this.
<0> why would mit write that
<11> who and what?
<0> hiya D-side
<0> link again bron
<0> http://www.cycom.se/dl/gwee
<12> hi all
<9> Redragon^: hm?
<9> Redragon^: I found that on a friend's machine...
<12> does anyone have any idea what could be my probleme i have 2 network (a dmz and an intern network) with windows every where exept my web server(linux mandriva 2005)
<0> not good
<13> hey bronaugh, can i have an opinion on the writeup of my website? http://pdatabase.dyndns.biz/ (SFW)
<0> i'm supposing he didn't take a page from the longword/redragon book on preventing injections hehe
<9> Redragon^: nope.
<9> Redragon^: it was running as non-root user... so I suspect machine's clean.
<12> but the probleme all the windows who is in the same range than my linux is able to ping it and get to the web page on my linux, but the one one the second ip range can'T ping my linux but ping the other windows in the dmz
<0> okay something really ****ing hard on my downloading here
<0> bron only if there wasn't a local user kernel exploit available :)
<0> but usually they just inject into /tmp or /var/tmp
<9> yeah, /tmp
<0> and do their nasties from there
<9> yup.
<0> yea make that /tmp noexec,nosuid (along with /var/tmp)
<0> kill php's access to perl and wget
<9> it wasn't a web exploit so far as I can tell
<9> not sure how the hell they got into the box
<0> well into /tmp thats most likely a web exploit
<0> had they used the sendmail vulnerability the box would have been had
<9> Redb3ard: looks good.
<9> Redragon^: running postfix.
<9> friends don't let friends run sendmail.
<9> box had webmin running.
<11> bronaugh_: you got 0wn3d?
<0> ewww webmin...
<9> D-side: no, that was last week.
<11> i didnt say "you got 0wn3d just now"
<9> (some bastards abusing crappy PHP code to send spam)
<9> not -my- crappy PHP code either... grr.
<0> bron you know php yes?
<9> no, this time it was a friend of mine's box that was scanning for awstats vulnerabilities and such.
<9> Redragon^: yeah, unfortunately.
<0> okay a couple questions
<0> first, a pconnect to mysql, thats only good for a session yes? its not good across multiple visitors to a website?
<0> i'm having a discussion with a fellow about his php code
<0> i blame his code for mysql spikes because of m***ively redundant queries
<0> he says they look like that because he is using a persistant connection to mysql
<14> i!!!
<14> D-side, you can help me?
<0> a persistant connection from php to mysql can't cross different visitors can it?
<9> Redragon^: generally using mysql_pconnect is a bad idea.
<9> I believe the point is that you get 1 conn per user connected (by IP?) and it stays with them.
<9> but it's a bad idea
<0> thats what i thought
<0> so his escuse of 12 identical queries on the same connection because its persistant doesn't hold any weight
<9> probably not.
<0> and you believe he uses mathmatical comparisons for dates instead of mysql data functions?
<9> fun.
<0> told him that wasn't what caused the load issue but is definately subject to error
<9> yeah...
<9> can you say y2k
<0> trying to help the guy out and he got all bent
