<0> heh
<0> Reddr: nah, im in console
<0> redragon: nah, im in console
<1> you want to change -what-L
<2> then why do you need to change video drivers, that generally doesn't apply to console
<0> because it's set incorrectly, and it wont let me run x
<2> okay back to not a gui person so can't help with that
<1> oh so edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
<1> change the Driver
<2> its not a system driver your changing its x configuration
<0> nah i dont have xorg, i have XF86Config
<1> whatever. same crap.
<2> the video card driver isn't invoked in console and console is all i use
<0> and i already tried, still doesn't work
<0> i c
<3> hi all

<3> if i do: mysqldump --opt mydb > myf.sql -uroot -p & <---note the & background, how know when finished?
<4> Have a LAN using a D-Link 601 router. With Fedora, I can ping everything on the LAN, but cannot get out to the Internet. (DNS is correct) any ideas of what to look for?
<1> jak2000: when you press return on the terminal where that is running, it'll say "[1] Done" or some such when it is complete
<1> Great_Auk: check the default route.
<1> route -n
<3> bronaugh ok
<3> i typed: ps -A and the command say at the left [Stopped] its ok?
<1> no.
<5> you forgot bg
<4> ok, the route -n returns a GW as 192.168.0.2 .. instead of 192.168.0.1 :-( (thxs)
<4> got it fixed to correct gw ... thxs :-0
<6> I'm installing slack and I have a choice of 3 kernals to use on a system that is scsi based (no ide drives at all)... scsi.s (which i booted the cd with), scsi2.s and scsi3.s This is meant for a server and other then usb2.0, the scsi card, video card (older ati rage pro) and network card (dlink tx538) there is nothing else in the way of hardware, any hints on which kernal to use?
<7> tried the documentation on the website?
<1> wish I could help, but I'm not familiar with Slackware.
<8> slackware ****s anyway
<9> MsLisa: you can always change it afterwards, so I would just go with the one that worked (scsi.s)
<9> steg: why do you think that? what is your favourite distro?
<6> that makes sense.
<2> ladybyte why don't we like slackware
<2> ladybyte why don't we use slackware
<5> she gone
<2> good point hehe
<10> is she based on slackware?
<8> texel: I was mostly saying it to tease bronaugh
<2> no
<9> steg: heh, aight :)
<1> yeah, because I refuse to have an opinion on whether it ****s or not without corroborating evidence :P
<8> texel: and my fingers don't feel up to the innevitable discussion that will ensue if I give you my reasons ;)
<9> steg: i was just curious :)
<2> well its hard to work with, has a poor package management system, and tends to lack installation of modern tools such as pam
<9> steg: i use slackware, but I don't really know other distros that good, so I'm not saying that it's good. just curious what outher people don't like about it
<8> texel: with me, it's mostly the lack of package management.
<9> redragon: poor package management? more like no package management heh
<8> texel: and the annoying insistance of many slackware users that this is somehow an advantage.
<2> well it has a package management tool but its quite crude imo
<8> it's a wrapper for tar. ;P
<9> yeah, it's very simple i don't even think it has dependencies
<1> so is dpkg
<1> you can untar dpkg archives.
<9> steg: exactly
<1> likewise you can un-cpio rpms
<11> !alien
<8> bronaugh: dpkg/tar have registries that track what is installed where, and what depends on what.
<1> steg: yup.
<1> quite true.
<8> bronaugh: this makes them more than wrappers, imho :P
<9> i was annoyed by redhat's rpm system because i used to compile/install stuff that wasn't rpm
<9> so that's why this didn't bother me in slack
<1> longword: yes, alien's one nice thing that came out of slack.
<11> texel: And then your eyes were opened and you learned to love RPM?
<8> texel: well, it will lead to a broken system
<9> but i agree with you
<8> texel: because you will lose track of what is installed, and what versions are installed
<1> How I learned to stop worrying and love the RPM?
<11> And what depends on what version of what?
<8> yes
<9> longword: no, I still use slack and don't like rpms
<8> texel: the rpm utility is fairly low-level. Most people use somethhing like yum or apt to manage them.
<11> Slackware as a whole isn't geared towards package installation and removal

<9> steg: you're right, but i can't help it. how do you manage it? do you always use rpms when they are available?
<1> debian rocks that way.
<11> Things like the missing SysV style init, inetd rather than xinetd
<9> steg: oh, right. i don't mind the utility
<12> texel: dont listen to them, they will always say "rpm sux" "slackware is retarded" ".deb rules the world"
<1> when you have 15,000 packages, chances of being able to simply "apt-get install <foo>" are quite high.
<8> texel: on debian, there's very little not available as a package, or as a third-party package, or as a backport. ;)
<8> in the rare case, I might install something to /usr/local
<9> i tried gentoo, the emerge thingy was interesting
<11> I will always use RPMs when available - and there are repositories to add to the set of packages provided by the distribution vendor
<8> it'll suffer from the same as whatever RPM distro you used
<8> you're stuck with what's in portage
<9> but something didn't work well (something about the fbconsole or something) and i unisntalled it (lazy ***) :)
<5> Welcome to my repository of add-on RPM packages for Red Hat/Fedora. I currently have 48498 packages available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (2.1, 3 and 4), Fedora Core (1, 2, and 3) and Red Hat Linux (6.2, 7.3, 8.0 and 9), for i386 and x86_64. They comprise 2590 different projects.
<11> And if there isn't an RPM I'll tend to create a source RPM for it if it's not too much of a PITA
<9> longword: oh. that makes sense
<11> Right now I'm rebuilding the grub package to add some patches I need to handle PXE
<1> HuggyBear: yow
<1> Crazy|Male: what choices.
<13> choices?
<1> crazy or male.
<5> hmm ok, time for me to catch up with tv
<1> run after it!
<1> run run run!
<5> nah I'll use the remote
<13> people think I am a female when I have Crazy|One
<1> oh. darn.
<13> so its to let em know ;p
<1> ahh, I just act like an ***.
<1> that lets them know I'm male
<5> ah new swisscenter available
<14> sup?
<5> hmmm this should be interesting
<5> yup
<1> hmm, I wonder about using TCP Westwood on a server.
<4> bronaugh ... you can't order grocery stuff via the internet around there? <G>
<1> Great_Auk: sure, if you want to pay $25 for a bag of onions.
<5> oooh its gets better
<5> oooooh better and better
<15> think I'll make a fortune when I start my home-delivery condoms business
<5> ooooh my
<15> =)
<15> non-stop delivery
<5> Znuff, not that
<15> oh =(
<4> how about software that rolls your own condoms off your printer?
<1> might be some QC issues with that.
<1> also, I don't think origami condoms would be very popular, somehow.
<16> Znuff: even better. you could do condom rental.
<15> :>
<4> well, they do have a printer that makes transparentcies, so they could be heading for condoms
<1> just think, you could print Snoopy on it.
<15> really now.... condom delivery would actually be great
<15> when was the last time you needed a condom in the middle of the night and you didn't have one?
<16> so how fast would you be able to deliver?
<0> hi, could anyone help me make an iso?
<16> that's an accidental pub, also
<16> er
<16> s/pub/pun/
<15> in bucharest, 10 minutes I think =/
<15> but only at night
<16> 2 hours during daytime.
<15> you could always use a bike :-)
<0> iso -- anyone?
<15> jksd, mkisofs
<1> jksd: mkisofs
<0> yea i know, but i dont really understand it
<15> "man mkisofs"
<0> the man page is a bit overwhelming
<15> read it
<0> some of it doesn't make sense to me
<1> mkisofs -R -J --hide-joliet-trans-tbl -o file.iso dir/
