<0> yeah...
<1> well, longword is dreamd is corrupting me, or 2001:1bd8::/32, or the font of ALL knowledge
<0> u see if i start in root mode
<2> "u see"?
<0> the screen gets blue and it starts to run things in a window with fedora core written
<0> in user mode
<0> only blue screen
<3> uh, ipv6
<4> does X fully start up in root? or just get farther?
<0> fully starts!
<2> ctraver: X is fully started up in either one.
<4> sounds like a permission error somewhere.
<5> anyone know anything about 3g cards?
<0> maybe
<2> ctraver: I think you mean to ask whether or not Gnome/KDE/whatever starts.
<4> mwilson- ok, started up and brought to a useable state is probably a better way to put it.

<5> night: who
<2> ctraver: It's in a usable state in either case.
<4> mwilson- from nightgods description, it doesn't sound useable, unless I missed something he said...
<2> ctraver: It's merely not the way he wants it to be. Gods only know why you'd call that a permissions problem.
<4> mwilson- if it works as one user, not as another, I generally suspect permissions...
<2> Why would that be?
<6> i think zombie is eating all the children
<0> hmm
<0> any sort of solution?
<0> besides full instalation :P
<2> But no, I'm breaking my promise to myself never to get involved in how people break X on purpose. He's all yours.
<2> NightGod: Is reinstalling it so bad? Surely you're not doing anything important with it, otherwise you wouldn't have destroyed it so casually.
<7> eh
<0> man im a total newbie i just wanted to install more languages
<0> no reason for it to break
<2> NightGod: No offense, but how would you know?
<0> if thats an installation option its not supposed to break something
<2> Where is that written?
<0> since its an "upgrade"
<0> thought this was a help chan but ure jk with me
<2> "Upgrade" would mean to take something else, and turn it INTO FC3. You'd expect that FC3 would be constructed well enough to recognize that it was ALREADY FC3, but then again, it *is* Fedora.
<4> nightgod- if there was an installation type labeled "repair", I would see your point.
<2> "ure jk"?
<4> if you don't want to reinstall the entire distro, reinstalling just X should be possible, ***uming your "upgrade" didn't break anything else.
<0> i dont wanna discuss the options philosophy
<0> just want to fix this
<3> NightGod, fresh install, start over.
<0> damn
<0> i mean... again
<3> we're too lazy today
<3> and working on a 50% discount... doesn't pay the bills :-)
<4> nightgod- how much do you have invested? my most recent install(slackware- so I expected trouble) had to be done about 6 or 7 times before it finally worked the way I wanted it to.
<2> NightGod: You could always just run Windows, you know.
<4> if you don't have a lot invested already, a fresh install may be a good thing.
<2> ctraver: and here I thought you were better than that.
<4> you'll get the result you wanted in the first place(more languages), and be able to further customize things.
<0> mwilson stop joking
<0> i need linux for work
<3> the rabbit steak is ready!
<8> NightGod have you considered adding a new account in order to see if x stop responding at that new account?
<0> hmm havent tried that
<6> 20571 ? Z 0:00 [route] <defunct>
<6> defunct ?
<1> rumour has it, defunct is a zombie process (ask me about "zombie")
<6> defunction?
<9> zombie?
<1> A zombie process is one which has issued an exit(), but whose parent has not yet issued wait() (or one of its variants) to retrieve the exit code. This usually means the parent process is buggy. You can't kill a zombie, because it's already dead; you have to kill the parent, or just ignore the zombie.
<10> anybody help with vmware here? installed ubuntu as virtual machine, can ping from virtual machine to main os and vice versa but virtual machine cannot connect to the net
<6> is that a zombie is a process that its parent process forgot about?
<2> Crazy|Male: What does VMWare tech support say?
<11> bulletz: possibly, or just one the parent process has not yet got arround to calling wait for
<0> hey i added a new account and startx worked!
<9> w00t.
<0> any clue?
<2> NightGod: It's been working all along.
<9> yes, it means you screwed up your configuration
<2> NightGod: Otherwise, X wouldn't be starting up.
<6> Gathond: kill or ignore them all?
<2> bulletz: Weren't you listening? You can't kill a zombie.
<0> any1 knows how to reconfigure?

<6> oh i see so i`m happy now
<2> NightGod: You'll have to wait until someone named "any1" joins the channel.
<0> so funny
<2> NightGod: Then you can ask him/her if he/she knows.
<11> bulletz: if there is alot of them and they are not going away after some seconds I would say its parrent is buggy and forgot about them, then you should probably fix the parent, else ignore them
<9> NightGod: the crudest method is to delete your account and homedir after copying everything of interest out of it, then recreating the account
<9> NightGod: however, you'll lose all your configuration settings.
<6> there are two
<0> i see
<6> i found it
<6> iwconfig and route
<9> NightGod: Or you could attempt to find out what difference between your configuration settings and the new account's configuration settings is causing the problem.
<0> which files then?
<9> I have no idea, frankly I'd just use the crude method.
<0> lol
<0> ok
<9> but be careful if there's stuff you'd be sorry to lose
<7> he shoots, he scores!
<0> since im new to this ive spent many hours installing some progs and configuring stuff
<0> didnt want to reinstall all over again
<6> iwconfig?
<5> anyone know anything about vodafone 3g datacards?
<3> damn the rabbit steak was great ^_^
<10> anybody with experience on vmware pls help
<10> cannot find anything of this problem on vmware tech support
<12> hi, i am trying to install ndiswrapper and it doesn't seem to work. i realised the problem was that i have no link to the kernel source from the modules directory. (it says the command ls /lib/modules/2.6.12-9-386/build should show at least 'include' directory and '.config' file. at the moment the directory doesn't even exist! bearing in mind i am a newbie, could anyone help out on creating the link?
<3> Nulo, install kernel-source
<13> ok, i'm trying to run MAKEDEV to recreate my mouse device and for some reason it keeps saying .udevdb presence implies active udev
<13> however i cannot seem to find a file named .udevdb
<13> i dunno wtf the mouse stopped working. i still have ps2 support in my kernel
<12> [znuff] how is that done? can it be done through apt-get? (bearing in mind i have no internet access on linux)
<13> i went to upgrade it and ran make oldconfig and rebooted and i couldn't start x cuz of missing mouse0
<3> Nulo, too bad if you don't.
<13> so i rebooted to the old kernel and mouse0 was still gone
<3> don't you have a LAN card around
<3> ?
<14> Nulo; i suggest not using color attributes in here..
<3> Nulo, actually... what distro is that?
<15> is there a freeware program i can use to burn DVD iso's? or install the OS without having to burn the CD?
<15> DVD**
<3> Niteye, k3b to burn it.
<12> madalin: sorry, was the script
<14> Nulo: it's ok ;) i just told you, as HellHound is really hellish about colors:)
<12> znuff: i actually ndiswraper to get the driver i need to get the usb wireless dongle to work on linux
<12> znuff: distro is kubuntu
<3> I figured that... anyway... what distro is it ?
<12> (debian)
<3> and you used the cds?
<12> yup
<3> or tried a netinstall ?
<12> auto-recognition feature didn't work
<12> used cd
<3> all _8_8 cds ?!?
<12> no. it was an img that fit into 1 cd
<2> How is Kubuntu Debian?
<12> kubuntu hoary hedgehog
<2> But how is that Debian?
<3> mwilson, based on debian
<3> Nulo, then you won't have kernel-source on the cd...
<12> mwilson: i might be wrong. but that's what i've read kubuntu is
<3> kubuntu is ubuntu with kde
<12> ok. so how can i get it?
<14> i think kubuntu is ubuntu for kids..
<3> madalin_, KDE
<3> Nulo, got a usb-pen drive ?
<3> cd-rw ? anything ?
<15> id also like to have my command prompt to be another colour than all the other text
<12> yes, and that i did manage to get to work
<2> Like Ubuntu wasn't bad enough... some collection of cluebies had to decide to replace Gnome with KDE.
<12> pen drive is working fine
<2> What *possible* reason is there to use Kubuntu?
<3> Nulo, great, now get a .deb of kernel-source for your kernel version, transfer it to that box, install it using dpkg, and to your thing
<12> .znuff: sorry, i am a newbie. what do u mean by transfer to the box?
<13> don't .hidden files show up with locate?
