<0> is it possible to hack into someone else's dsl line and use their speed ? I have been experiencing slow downs. how could someone do that ? <1> since a dsl line is a dedicated link between the dslam and your dsl modem - no <2> hack into your dsl no, if your using wireless then possibly use your network <0> no it is wired <2> then its just your isp :) <0> what is the best speed increasing software for dsl ? <1> a word processor where you can write an order for a speed upgrade and something to send it to your isp :p <0> ok, thanks <3> :) <2> software to increase your surfing speed is mostly crap and con job unless its something you get from your isp that compresses information from your isp to you <2> what kind of download speed are you getting? <4> Best DVD Player for Linux? <5> daium. provider disconnect. what did he say on the joke with the word processor? :) <2> tojoe i think these kids ares spoiled with there 500-1.5mbps download speeds, complaining its slow, they dont know what slow is :) <5> or they me***ure the speed of their pipe with the speed of a download (e.g. bittorrent)
<6> what's with the "best $app" questions? You try one, if it suits your needs you continue to use it, while keeping an eye open of other things. <4> Oh, sorry <7> except setting the nic and the routing table do i need anything else to make the net to work ? <4> I forgot that some applications are just found by the general public to not be as good as others. <2> padre and having a connection :) <7> what do you mean red? <6> isn't irc part of the general public? <2> well you gotta have an internet connection :) <4> yes, it sure is! <5> madbovine, only a few selected by the irc lord are here :p <4> omg, it's an OREO cake! <5> what? gimme! <4> k, DCC? <4> :P <5> :p <7> to set nameservers you edit the resolv.conf or there is other way ? <2> Padre nope that all you gotta do <7> i don't get it i set all that but i still ain't got any responce from my gw :/ <8> What do nameservers have to do with your gateway? <5> why mess with routing tables. set the gateway IP for your local IP in /etc/network/interfaces or coresponding places, add the resolv.conf entry for your nameserver <8> Other than nothing, of course? <5> the rest of the work has to be done in your gateway <5> s/in/on/ <7> let me refrase "that i still don't got any responce from my providers gw " <9> for .deb files, I use dpkg to install ? right ? <10> Yup <9> I'm trying to install opera.deb using dpkg , whats the proper way to do it ? <10> dpkg --help <9> would that be dpkf -xi oper.deb <9> ? <9> I mean, dpkg -xi filename.dep <11> dpkg -i *.deb <9> http://d1f.org/~phalcon/ubuntu/Screenshot.png <9> what do i do ? <11> Kirt: apt-cache search xlib6g <9> thanks <9> it did'nt find anything <11> Well, why are you trying to install the etch version of Opera? <11> Why aren't you installing the Breezy Badger version of it? <9> sorry, I'll try that now <11> I mean...drrrr <11> "Hmmm...let's see here. I use Ubuntu. I think I'll try and install the Linspire version of Opera instead of the Ubuntu version. Yeah. That makes perfect sense! I'm a genius!" <5> hello Gaia^ <9> according to the site, that was the file I got when I selected breezy badger <11> Kirt: Then read the Ubuntu wiki on installing Opera <9> maybe, the site made a mistake ? <9> okay <11> Try a "sudo apt-get -f install" <11> Just that <11> No other arguments <12> ok how can i boot into my unbootable linux installation from 2006 livecd? <12> grub got messed up <13> perhaps telling us what distro would be helpfun <13> helpful even <13> nothing about this is "fun" <12> gentoo <13> read the install guide. <13> figure out how to chroot to it. <13> then fix grub <12> i'm on the livecd
<12> 2006 <13> and? <13> do as I've suggested. <12> well i had gentoo working for months <13> yes i know. then you broke grub. <13> now its time to fix grub, by doing what i've already said <13> unless of course you can boot to the grub shell. <13> in which case you should be able to figure it out <12> i use ntloader to access a 512 linux.bin to get into grub usually <14> playing with analog, some neat features in there <12> i can't mount my partitions / or /boot from the install cd though <12> it forces me to logon as user gentoo <13> wow. <15> did my message just get through? Or was it too logn <13> thats what you get for using ntloader i guess. <13> in any case, i cant help you with that mess. <2> hiya d-side <15> hello there. I have installed Mandriva 2006 on a small mini-PC I have here. It has 96MB RAM a 13GB harddisk and a 400mhz Celeron Processor. The distro is fully installed and working just fine. I have connected a network cable to my switch and my switch shows a LED <15> indicating the presence of a node. the ifcfg-eth0 has all the IP information required, and I did a "Service network restart". I rebooted several times. Still, I can't access the internet. Pinging also does not work, it keeps timing out. Same goes for when the box is pinged from another computer on my network. Help appreciated. <16> Quick! HIDE! it s a D-side ! <10> seb: Can you ping anything else on the same network? <10> Evening Gaia <16> gawd! caught watchas longword <17> mayday mayday <2> hiya Gaia^ <12> i can fix all this <2> hiya longword <16> ...---... <17> how do i tell, using iptables, to allow port 110 <16> red boo :) <12> all i need is root access from the gentoo cd <15> longword, from the linux box? From the linux box I cannot ping anything except for localhost and the box's own IP. From other computers in my network (running Windows) I can ping all computers in my network, except for the linux box <2> SeBsZ can you ping anything? your gateway? another lan machine? <2> from you linux box that is <15> Redragon^, no, nothing at all. I tried pinging other LAN machines, my gateway and DNS servers (at my ISP) but nothing replies at all. <2> what does ifconfig say? <10> Seb: What does mii-tool and ethtool say? <15> Well, I can't paste it anywhere since I don't have internet access, but in a nutshell it says eth0, with the HWaddr and the correct inet addr of 192.168.0.100 , bcast of 192.168.0.255, mask of 255.255.255.0. I don't see the gateway anywhere which should be 192.168.0.1, maybe that is why (something wrong with gateway settings?). Other than that it says it has received 36.8KiB :S and Interrupt:4 <15> longword, hold on let me check <15> mii-tool says eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok <2> if you can't ping in the lan then its not the gateway <15> ethtool says... command not found ... Let's see if I can install that tool <15> alright makes sense... so not gateway... <10> Try a different cable <15> done that already <15> tried 2 different ones <15> and the LED on my switch comes on just fine <15> Could it be the NIC? I mean, I'm 100% sure it worked fine 5 hours ago on XP still, but it's a Davicom NIC and perhaps linux doesn't like it? ALthough Mandriva's installation nicely told me the exact name and brand of it and found and installed the driver, so I doubt that's it. <15> Well what else could it be? <15> longword, just installed ethtool, what is the exact command you'd like me to enter? <15> longword? <18> methinks longword is dreamd is corrupting me, or 2001:1bd8::/32, or the font of ALL knowledge <10> ethtool eth0 - but it won't tell you much more than mii-tool <15> "Settings for eth0: No data available" <3> well then <13> so <13> as with other fedoras, is 5 just more eyecandy? or are there changes with substance behind it <12> yo can someone accept a file from me and upload to it to me when i reboot? <2> hmmm <12> it's only 512 bytes <12> i need to get grub working again <19> you need a usb keystick :) or mail it to yourself at gmail or something :) <12> good idea <12> tahnx <5> D-side, updated software is most of it. the new 2.14 gnome, new open office, etc. <13> shame no decent distros come with xgl out of the box. <13> i think i'd even install one <10> D: There's substance. <13> do tell! <13> i'm trying the vmware image now. <5> desktop in 3D would be fun <10> D: The new GNOME has lots of bugfixes and in particular plugged leaks <13> I think I need about 4gb of ram on here. <13> longword: enough to make me want to switch back from kde?
