<0> could be
<1> so rebooting aint helping him till he straightens that out
<0> Zer0: rpm -q kernel and pastebin the output
<0> !paste
<2> More than 3 lines? Paste your stuff at http://paste.getlinuxhelp.org/ and then tell us the url it gives you.
<3> I am getting the error "httpd: bad username" when I try to run apache in a root jail, and my jail /etc/p***wd has this entry --> httpd:x:1003:102::/dev/null:/bin/sh
<1> make the home dir something besides /dev/null
<3> ok
<4> HI all, I'am newbie, I want to use linux there are 2 distro's whiche I like but I just can't make a choice the 2 distro's are fedora and ubuntu, please can you help me to make a good choice
<5> i'm having trouble with imap not staying started...initially at startup it wouldn't start, i would manually start it an everything was fine...someone said have daemontools run it...now it starts at boot time but dies about every sec...daemontools has to keep restarting it...any ideas??
<0> me3: they're both good choices for a newbie
<0> dit: what distro?
<0> dit: and which imap daemon?
<5> fedora
<5> courier-imap
<5> i used qmailrocks for ***istance

<4> fiver, I have an dell inspiron 9300
<0> ah, never tried it. I wouldn't change the default run method, though. have you checked for errors in /var/log/messages? and also maybe /var/log/maillog
<4> so wiche distro should I install
<5> freebsd :)
<0> hah
<4> freebsd?
<2> i heard freebsd is a Unix variant. It doesn't have apt. a hella operating system that is seventeen times more powerful than Linux, and its ports collection rocks apt's world, or "Now look here. I just installed freebsd so I'm obviously smarter than you"
<1> hiya gewp
<0> me3: it's really up to you. I don't think one can said to be "better" than the other.. the differences involve more personal preference than anything else.. one thing you could do is try the ubuntu livecd and see if you like it before installing
<5> checked /var/log/maillog ...nothing really there
<5> and /var/log/messages
<0> too bad fedora doesn't do a livecd
<3> root@melchior:/rootjail/root# chroot /rootjail /usr/local/lib/apache2/bin/apachectl start
<3> httpd: bad user name httpd
<3> Still the same error
<0> dit: I'm not sure I can help you, then. I've not used courier yet myself
<0> only dovecot
<5> cool...thanks
<3> httpd:x:1003:102::/home/rootjail:/bin/sh
<0> did you create /home/rootjail?
<3> yep
<0> k
<3> its world readable too
<0> this is more up Redragon^'s alley
<6> me3: http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html
<1> i've never run apache in a jail
<4> thanks dude
<0> me either
<4> spreekt iemand hier Nederlands
<0> laj: nice one
<0> I'd forgotten about that site
<7> Ok let me get teh code
<7> http://paste.getlinuxhelp.org/2115
<3> Well, regardless of what program it is, it should still find httpd as a valid user
<7> let me also pastebin the yum output
<3> if its in /etc/p***wd
<0> meh
<1> Braden when you chroot into /home/jailroot the /etc/p***wd is no longer accessable
<1> since you probably dont have a /home/jailroot/etc/p***wd then there in lies your problem
<1> roots require alot of duplication
<3> its /rootjail/etc/p***wd
<1> err chroots
<1> and httpd is in that file?
<3> yep
<7> That bad news fiver?
<1> do you have /roojail/etc/group?
<0> Zer0: do I remember that rpm -q fedora-release says 5?
<3> Yep
<7> Correct
<1> strange then
<6> so $Home is /rootjail/home/jailroot ? (not /home/jailroot)
<0> Zer0: did your yum update generate any errors?
<7> on the last update yes
<7> FC3 to FC4 I was fine
<0> Zer0: do you remember the error(s)?
<7> Unfortunately now but I can post the current yum dependecy errors if you want
<0> Zer0: do this: yum install kernel and paste the errors from that
<7> ok
<3> laj: yep
<7> Fiver: Running now
<6> Braden: have a look at http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=04/05/24/1450203 compare to see if you find the reason, or some such

<3> ok
<7> Fiver: http://paste.getlinuxhelp.org/2116
<0> Zer0: at this point my recommendation would be burn the cds and do an upgrade from CD instead of using yum.
<7> hum ok
<7> Guess I will burn the CD images
<7> FC5 images?
<0> what does rpm -q kernel say now? still just that one what was it.. 2.6.12 kernel?
<7> yeah I think so
<0> check
<7> kernel-2.6.12-1.1381_FC3
<0> "I think so" is really not a good idea when troubleshooting :)
<0> yeah, that being the case, I'd make the cds
<7> if I upgrade from the CD's it will keep my webserver and meeting maker and DHCP configurations the same right
<8> i did the ultimate no-no on my production box
<0> Zer0: yes
<8> accidentaly added it's own ip to the iptables ban file. locked everyone out for a few hours untill someone could goto the box
<0> haha
<8> when i added the ip i was still somewhat asleep and didn't check
<7> If I do need to install from the CD's then I am going to have to do it later tonight as it's a production machine
<1> Zer0 before you do that make sure you investigate anything special that was installed on the machine :)
<7> I just need to read up on DCHP from FC, Installign meetingmaker server and backing up Meeting maker DB
<0> backup the box before you upgrade
<1> so what did you all come up with on kernel?
<7> is there a piece of software I could get to Mirror the harddrive to another harddrive?
<0> yeah, there's ghosting software for linux
<7> what should I look for that is user friendly
<9> Hm.
<8> ghost works on all the linux fs
<1> Fiver did you all try grabbing the FC5 kernel rpm and installing it, then modding the boot loader and rebooting?
<0> Redragon^: no, that will involve the use of --force
<3> Redragon^: I think I found the problem using strace. I believe its wanting a couple of files (which weren't told to me by ldd) that I didn't have copied to the jail.
<3> So I will copy those in a bit
<1> no no
<3> Thanks for the help though =)
<1> you never -U a kernel anyway
<1> just install it
<1> Braden jails are real pain to work with :)
<0> ah, I've never tried that
<1> kernel rpm rule #1, never ever ever upgrade, always install the new kernel
<0> kernels have no deps?
<1> you can have unlimited kernel packages installed at the same time
<0> surprising I've never noticed that
<1> let me check
<3> Redragon^: Yep
<7> I had 10 kernels installed
<7> I removed all but the latest
<10> olq
<10> ola
<10> .o
<10> hopla
<7> So Should we try that?
<1> hiya maxx
<1> Zer0 i would get the latest FC5 kernel rpm available and try to install it
<1> i'm not showing alot of requirements for kernels so it shouldn't be to difficult to do by hand
<1> once you do that you can mod your boot loader and boot into the new kernel, we may yet get by this upgrade flub :)
<5> would /var/www/html be a good place to unpack squirrelmail?
<1> as good as any dit :)
<1> i personally go for a sub dir on a webmail app since you may have a real website first
<5> how about /downloads...i've come to far to mess up my apache...or anything else for that matter :)
<1> why would you put a webmail app in downloads
<1> unpack it in html then rename the dir it creates to something simple like webmail or squirrelmail
<1> that way its installed in a sub directory
<5> ok...sounds good to me....thanks
<1> one day i'll get around to making my standalone webmail app when the universe is kind enough to let me have some freakin free time
<11> read your messages, foo
<1> foo i did and responded
<1> 5 times
<11> you did ?
<1> yup
<12> g'nite
<10> eep
<10> he rev red
