<0> hmm <1> (Back) Hehe, thankie :) <1> x86-livecd-2006.0 ? <2> I think thats the latest one... or they already have a 2006.1 ? But if you go to latest , it is symlink`ed correctly in the ftp tree. <3> How can I make a script run with root permissions silently ? <1> CatalinuX: Periodically ? <3> yes <3> yes Kanashimi <1> CatalinuX: May I suggest crontab maybe ? <4> CatalinuX: do you have root? <1> CatalinuX: Or crond I mean, to add an entry in the crontab. <3> netbeui: If I have root ? <3> yes I do <5> Hello all <5> Question about DNS that someone might know, how long will it take a change in a zone file to propigate tipicaly?
<4> ahh, CatalinuX best way is crontab <1> Hello. <3> netbeui, how do I use that ? <4> Beta_: right after the next refresh of the root servers <1> Beta_: Hmm... 2 days to a week or so maybe ? <5> I've added a A record, changed the serial and restarted named, 30 minutes later and my ISP's server still isn't showing the new A record <4> CatalinuX: crontab -e <4> CatalinuX: man crontab for details <5> I thought the DNS system was a hirearchy where the root servers only forwarded you to the server that actualy hosts the domain? <5> Or do teh root servers cache results? <2> Kanashimi , what if i want to have a proggie, lets say a C , which i can call as a user and which can uses funtions which usualy need root-privilege ? <4> Beta_: the second one <5> No way to force them to update their cache? <4> if you have access over them then maybe you could rehash it <1> c-wolf: You'll need to be very careful in that case and make sure it's not possible to divert the functions of the program or script in any way. If you can be reasonably sure about that, you can chown it to root and give it a SUID bit with chmod. Naturally the program needs to complete some specific task, or have some other authentification functionality in place if it's <1> more freeform. <4> since you don't have any, then you'll gonna have to be patient <1> c-wolf: Also I would suggest considering the possibility of using 'sudo' instead. <5> Oh well :) <5> Thanks netbeui <2> Kanashimi , what can i do else than sudo or SUID ? <2> Kanashimi , somethink like groups ? Maybe make my app. in same group as the function i want to call, but set it +x for others ? <4> c-wolf: is it your box? <2> netbeui : yap. <1> c-wolf: Weell... I guess you could do some user limiting with groups, but you'll still have to have something there actually changing the active UID to root. <1> c-wolf: Another possibility would be to have some daemon running as root and accepting requests from users over a network interface or something. <1> With proper authentification and such of course. <2> Well, Kanashimi , to be honest, that SUID does not give me a safe feeling at all... thats why i`d preffer to solve it via groups, or am i wrong ? <4> c-wolf: and api should get you going <2> Kanashimi , hmmm that daemon thinky sounds tasty, but i fear it would be too much for what i need.. <1> c-wolf: I'd suggest using sudo to be honest, you can limit certain functions to certain users and behind a p***word. <5> sudo does a good job <2> Hmmm... ok, then lemme rtfm about that sudo *g* <1> c-wolf: :) <6> ugg <2> Thre problem is, i`m too lazzy to su each time when i wanna turn on the small screen-LED of my thinkpad :) <5> The keyboard light? <2> Beta_ : yep . <5> You're running a program to turn it on/off? or a program to make the Fn keys work right? <1> c-wolf: Oh, hmm. Well if theres no user input involved and so, you could probably do that with just a SUID bit too. Since you can quarter it to just that specific purpose, and you could further limit the access with groups probably. <2> Beta_ : due to some stupid setting i cannot remember where i commited it, the fn-key suspends the keyboard :D and i use a proc-proggie to turn the light on/off :D <4> hahaha <1> c-wolf: Aw, heh :) <7> be worried, I have Returned! lol <7> c-wolf see above >EG< <7> _madalin changed me topic though! <2> Gaia^ , i cannot read, did you forgot ? :P <1> c-wolf: You could simply use a static little SUID script to achieve that. One that wouldn't take any user input for safetys sake. <7> c-wolf makes IRC kinda difficult, yes? >G< <8> Gaia^; when i changed it there was no topic. Desynch maybe ? <7> _madalin im messin' luv >G< <7> tis a sat night! NO work 2moro! so who really gives a dang! LOL <8> doh <7> lol <7> hiyas btw <2> Kanashimi , you mean, a scriptie which has SUID and takes care of the light-function , is that what you mean ?
<2> Gaia^ : You can call me too to say hi :)) <7> _madalin how ye be then? <8> Gaia^; i've had better ;) <9> c-wolf: dude, using sudo is way more secure and easy than to write a custom script <7> mad: snap! :) <10> heh <0> can somone do a nslookup on NS1.PAXIMPERIUMONLINE.COM please <2> T`aZ , ok, then i`m goana continue reading (never used that SUDO , was thinking its something evil ) :D <7> IP range : 72.38.192.0 - 72.38.207.255 <7> Network name : CGOC-WIDO5-1 <7> Infos : Cogeco Cable Canada Inc. <7> Infos : P.O.Box 5076 Stn. Main <7> Infos : 950 Syscon Rd. <7> Infos : Burlington <7> Infos : ON <7> Infos : L7R-4S6 <7> Country : Canada (CA) <7> Abuse E-mail : security@cogeco.net <7> Source : ARIN <7> . <8> Gaia^; stop pasting or i'll remove the ^ in your nick. <7> that should annoy the bots <0> egad i just wanted the ip lol <11> flood <7> BattleNet flood? u live in the UK during the last week? >G< <9> c-wolf: taz ALL= NOP***WD: /sbin/reboot , add a line like that, that's all :p <0> ok can somone resolve NS1.PAXIMPERIUMONLINE.COM t single ip please :) <7> HINT! its in the IP range : 72.38.192.0 - 72.38.207.255 <7> >G< <2> T`aZ , cool , and you maybe need then also an ssh-access on my machine, right ? :) <8> LOL <0> lol <7> wamp it dont resilve <9> c-wolf: it was an example, make sure to change the username and the command :D <7> resolve as well <0> wth <7> wamp Hades ? <2> T`aZ : Hehe, thankyou, but i will first read and make sure i understood your line before i start using it :) <12> Wamphyri: NS1.PAXIMPERIUMONLINE.COM has address 72.38.195.48 ( 1 min. ago ) now, Host NS1.PAXIMPERIUMONLINE.COM not found <9> c-wolf: i was gonna recommand that anyway, never trust a command you dont understand from an evil unknown person on irc ! <0> hmm <7> ip address: 72.38.195.48 named address: d38-195-48.home1.cgocable.net <1> c-wolf: Yes, that's what I meant when I learned of what you were wanting to use it for. But yeah, sudo is the safer solution, but with a specific purpose like that that doesn't need any user input, etc, it'd be pretty safe to just make a tiny SUID script too for turning it on, and another for off. <0> Gaia^: yeah thats this achine <0> machine <1> c-wolf: (Since you mentioned you didn't want to su always to turn it on/off) <0> wonder whats cause it to go loopy like that <7> wamp hon i Invented typonese ya know :) <1> c-wolf: And sudo will be asking for the p***word. <1> c-wolf: But it's safer though. <7> wamp: want me to flood some more? >G< <0> Gaia^: lol sure ;) <7> Wamphyri da bots dont like me and i sure as hell dont like them, but they seem to be scared of me, dunno why mind <10> thepiratebay.org is back online <10> with a neato new logo haha <7> wamp luv folk get scared of me cos ill fight to the death if i believe in summit :) <11> Gaia^, nop... far from UK <7> BattleNet twas a jest luv <11> :) <11> ok <6> hiya Gaia^ <7> redragon BOO |||||| <2> Gaia^, stop scaring people, you know what happens if one gets scared and fall over a server ? Thats why netsplits happen :)) <7> wolfie it is? sheesh and here was me thinking that ALL that flooding I did was the cause <2> Gaia^ , no, you are not romanian, so you cannot use flood to cause splits :)) <7> c-wolf thats summit-IST ya know <7> ah! maybe racist? <2> Gaia^ who me ? No, but i am romanian, so i must know what i talk about , heh :)) <7> c-wolf and i 'could' also show you PLENTY of .ro folk that help a LOT each and EVERY day on undernet <7> so, whatever ANY countries rep is, it dont mean a damn IMO
