<0> can somebody tell me why i get this line on debian sid's update "Ign http://security.debian.org testing/updates/main Packages", but 3 lines later i get "Hit http://security.debian.org testing/updates/main Packages"?
<3> night all
<0> night scot
<4> hi, could some1 tell me what this error means..
<4> clnt_create: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to receive
<5> yelloooow
<6> eth0 and what do you do to get that?
<5> hey Redie!
<6> hiy whitewabbit
<4> im running a program
<6> what program
<4> rpc program
<4> do u think i might be missing a file or something?
<6> you trying to mount an nfs?
<4> nah
<6> explain what you do to get this error, portmap is used for lots of stuff :)
<6> okay your trying to start rpc?
<6> do you have portmap running?
<4> ill check..
<4> no i dont think it is
<6> i'm betting portmap isn't running, its required for nfs
<4> maybe i dont even have it installed?
<6> what distro you using?
<4> ubuntu
<6> most mainstream distros install it
<6> i know debian does but dont know if ubuntu took it out of standard minimal install
<4> nope, i just checked, it's not installed
<4> there would be my problem heh
<4> do i just get the portmap package, or will i need other packages to go with it?
<6> yea nfs gets grumpy if you dont have portmap running
<5> wrong gcc version ? wth, what's wrong w/ mplayer people
<4> hmm, now im getting..
<4> clnt_create: RPC: Program not registered
<4> im guessing i might need extra packages?
<6> i'm suprised nfs installed without fulfulling dependances
<4> any idea how to register?
<6> eth0 you ever thought about google :)
<4> yea im trying heh :)
<4> no luck tho
<6> all i see is references to mounting an nfs partition
<6> what gives you that error now
<6> from starting nfs?
<7> hi all, which IDS program in that is easy and simple?
<4> redragon: from starting the program
<6> from starting nfs?
<4> nah not using nfs
<6> what program are you trying to start?
<6> afk
<8> i need help checking for bad sectors on a secondary drive. like the command?

<8> mkfs -ct <filesystem> <partition device file> will this one check for them?
<9> what does mkfs say the "ct" arguments do?
<10> hi to all. i have installed squirrelmail using this command in debian. "apt-get install squirrelmail". but i don't know what to do next. i can't find either help from their website. my question is how can i access it? like www.myserver.com/mail
<7> read the docs
<7> /etc/? maybe
<11> shifty- "mkfs -c /filesystemordevicenamehere"
<8> ct doe something like checks for bad sectors and stops them from being used
<11> -t is for setting the file system type.
<11> unless you've got a different version of mkfs than I do... I've got whatever comes by default with Slackware 10.2.
<11> "man mkfs" for details.
<12> anyone run linux-ppc on a mac- mini yet?
<11> different implementations will differ somewhat, sometimes in seemingly tiny ways that totally screw everything up if you don't read the third word on the second sentence of the fifth paragraph of the fifteenth screen of the man page.
<11> I exaggerate a bit, but check the man page...
<13> with the "ftp" command in linux. Is it possible to mget a full directory structure?
<13> with files ?
<10> my squirrel dir is i think installed here "/usr/share/squirrelmail#"
<10> is it ok to move this folder to my web dir? /var/www/?
<8> ctaver you ther?
<11> no
<8> lol well when you said filesystemordevice name will hdb not work because the hard drive i need to run it on is a slave drive
<8> nevermind
<8> i got it
<11> if it doesn't work because its a slave drive, you've got more problems in your system than a few suspected bad sectors.
<8> /dev/hdb
<11> yup.
<11> should have been more clear. but you figured it out so its all good.
<8> lol
<11> hey, I use slackware, your lucky I"m not being an elitist snob and then coming in under a secret alias to ask where my home directory is.
<8> lol
<8> i am using slackware... and know nothing about linux
<8> so i asked stupid questions and make people mad... so i try to make them sound half smart
<11> slackware can be a pain int he ***. Just remember if you get to the point where you want to use it for everyday work as a primary OS, other distributions have a lot of tools set up to make that easy.
<14> you picked slckware knowing you dont know much about linux, interesting.....
<11> muii- well, slack does force you to learn. the others? not so much.
<14> true
<14> debian keeps you laaaaaazzzzy
<15> Slack doesn't force you to learn anything... where'd you get that idea?
<15> Cluebies who use Slack do so because they've gotten the idea from somewhere that it makes them leet. That's all.
<8> i just want to know how to install amsn... and help?
<15> shifty_28: And reading the instructions it comes with isn't something you'd ever do?
<8> yeah i read them
<8> run ./configure first
<12> sorry if this has been answered
<12> has anyone ran debian ppc on a mac mini yet?
<11> shifty- and your specific problem is?
<8> but i couldnt figure out where to run that...
<14> mac mini, nice
<15> ctraver: He can't find anyone to do his thinking for him yet.
<12> best machine i ever bought
<8> i mean in terminal i ***ume but do i need to cd to something specific?
<14> debian on a mac, that would be nice
<12> muii i ran it on my old g3 233 ran great
<12> i just bought the g4/1.33ghz/512ram/40gb mini
<12> great machine, and lightning fast
<11> shifty- read the docs that come with it. If they don't specify, it is generally unpack the tarball. move to the directory it unpacks to(normally the name of the tarball minus the extension), then ./configure, make, then make install.
<15> shifty_28: Gee, do you think maybe... just maybe... you might be supposed to be in the directory you unpacked the source into?
<8> how much $?
<12> 499$
<12> and it weighs like 9 lbs
<8> yeah but i couldnt get it right lol
<8> where did you get it from?
<11> HOWEVER, that isn't set in stone. It generally does go that way, but there are exceptions, and there should be some sort of docs on the net for it that will clarify any exceptions.
<12> and its the same size 5 jewel cd cases
<14> my laptop is a pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1280mb ram, ATI Radieon 32mb graphics card
<12> sure you could there on apple.com for the same price
<8> do i need to be in the directory with the install folder and the other one?
<15> Oh, brother.
<12> osx is pretty powerful tho
<11> shifty... cd to the directory the tarball is in.
<11> Unpack the tarball.
<11> Find the new directory. Go there. Then run the configure script and make.
<14> I had osx installed on this dell laptop
<11> if you need it broken down more simply, I can't.
<14> but not enough support yet
