Nisha: I am getting an error while trying to install fedora core 3 on my virtual PC. it says kernel Panic: unable to kill idle process.. Can some one tell me how to fix it

<0> can somebody tell me how can i make a reverse dns for my ip , i have slackware 10.2
<1> do you have authority over your ip?
<0> yes Redragon^
<1> how many ips do you have?
<0> 3
<1> i doubt you have reverse authority over them then, give me one real quick and i'll check
<0> 85.186.119.48
<0> 85.186.119.49
<0> 85.186.119.50
<1> generally a provider doesn't want the h***le of setting up authority on anything less than 32
<0> i can`t do nothing ... without authority no ? ....
<1> you can't do PTR (reverse lookup) records no
<1> grr now i can't remember how i did this ...
<1> i'm showing
<1> 186.85.in-addr.arpa. 10576 IN SOA ns1.astral.ro. hostmaster.astral.ro. 2006012301 21600 2160 1814400 86400
<1> that means they didn't break them down at all best i can tell

<0> thnq Redragon^
<1> no prob
<1> reverse are a pain to delegate in small chunks is why most places dont do it
<2> hi
<2> said
<2> ladybyte, hello
<3> bonjour
<4> hi. what should be ther permissions of sources.list?
<5> someone got FWD workin?
<6> flush sjphone didn't help?
<5> yeah i got it workin
<5> but with x-lite
<5> it was a codec problem :(
<5> at least i figured it out ;)
<7> Hey, I have an old compaq with an ati rage LT pro card that I'm trying to get to work for TV output with linux (tried both mandriva and SuSe distros). The image displays on the TV screen, but the refresh rate seems out of sync no matter what I set it to. Does anyone know how I could resolve this problem?
<1> not a clue here :(
<7> Aw, thanks :/
<8> hello?
<3> HI, rupesh!
<1> hello
<8> redragon: i have a dual boot machine: fedora core 3 and windows xp. neither OSes will boot
<9> Rupesh: no errors?
<8> if i do fixboot in windows recovery console will it destroy linux
<9> your pc is fried, get a new one
<7> maybe it's just the mbr
<9> ahh
<10> you're not really missing anything those os's ****s rupesh
<9> yeah, reinstall grub or lilo
<8> its posting okay
<7> then it's just your mber
<7> *mbr
<8> when booting windows it reboots without error
<8> MBR i thought so too
<1> Rupesh i recommend booting with a linux boot disk and chrooting into your linux install and running grub or lilo (whichever bootload you used) to rewrite to boot information
<8> Redragon^: right! thanks mate
<9> what am i? chopped liver?
<9> :P
<7> with onions.
<9> !@#!
<8> i'm a linux newbie. i dont even know how to create a linux boot disk. or can i download one?
<7> ;p
<1> hmm liver and onions, that sounds good
<9> no it doesn't
<9> it sounds disgusting
<1> Rupesh what happens when you try to boot?
<9> Rupesh: you can use your install media for a bootdisk
<8> "kernel panic - not syncying: No limit found. Try p***ing init=option to kernel"
<9> hd support?
<1> hmm that sounds funky
<9> what kinda harddrive do you have, Rupesh? this linux install/kernel booted before?
<1> maybe it didn't write the info correctly or something is messed up in the conf using grub
<1> yea, did it work at some point and what changed?
<8> linux is on a IDE HDD..... and Windows on a RAID 0 SATA stripped set
<11> and linux still outperforms. heh.
<9> Rupesh: try the bootdisk thing yet?
<7> just toss the install CD in and run it as an upgrade if it lets you; that should avoid all the h***le
<8> i need to download and burn fedora core 3 cd 1 first :-)
<8> i just moved house everything is crazy
<9> Rupesh: insert your install media and when prompted for mount options type: root=/dev/hda1 or whatever
<9> or what Illusionatic said

<8> this isnt even funny. i have to prepare a pitchbook for a client tomorrow
<9> but it is kinda dumb to waste a cd if all you're gonna do is use it for recovery. they don't have boot/recovery disks available for download?
<9> nm, let you do what's simplest hten
<7> Sorry, my solutions are always like shooting flies with cannons or worse. It's just my way of doing things ;p
<7> "What, I got an error message? Format!"
<9> Illusionatic: you said nothing wrong, your suggestion was best until he mentioned having to dl the media again :P
<7> Ahh :/
<9> probably still is for all i know of fedora
<12> Dear God I hate ubuntu.
<9> yeah? i was gonna put it on my mom's system
<12> I was installing it on a friend's machine, and if you know what you're doing, it drives you crazy.
<9> she runs debian atm
<9> haha
<12> If you're new I guess it's good to learn, but it's ANNOYING in some aspects. Like, I was wondering.... wtf? Why didn't it ask me for a root p***word? wtf? But then I read the starter documentation to see they just disable it.
<9> heh
<13> duplex: If you know what you're doing, you read the starter documentation :P
<9> p***word prompting is a feature, not a bug.
<12> steg: Yeah but ubuntu is just weird. :-/
<13> duplex: no, it's different. It uses sudo.
<13> Doesn't fedora do the same these days?
<12> sinthetek: I knew it wasn't a bug, I was just wondering what is going on.
<9> i guess if it's some sort of auth it's cool...
<9> duplex: i didn't mean to imply *you* didn't know the difference, i was implying the ubuntu developers didn't :)
<12> steg: That was just the first example. The second example was when I did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and changed everything, just to realize when I started X over again, nothing was changed. I dont know where it was reading it's configuration from, but it wasn't anywhere in /etc/X11/
<12> And it wasn't in /home/ either.
<9> hahaha, i had same problems with mandrake when i first setup my mom's system
<9> i tried to add fluxbox to it and nothing was where any documentation i could find said it should be
<9> similar problems with redhat. they have these auto-recover features to make sure noone changes anything
<13> duplex: gah, but it's *not debian*
<13> duplex: you can't treat it like debian!
<9> soon as you reboot, init system and confs are all replaced with backups or something
<12> I changed the resolution like 10 different times, with the dpkg-reconfigure and by directly editing the xorg.conf. Nothing I did worked.
<12> steg: I also hand edited the xorg.conf
<9> until you tell the system that the conf you currently have is good somehow, it will continue to replace it with a default
<13> duplex: why didn't you use the tool that ubuntu provides for doing that?
<12> steg: Because no network connection and no way to the online documentation.
<13> and iirc adding my monitor capabilities in ubuntu worked absolutely fine
<12> Just a quick starter guide.
<13> duplex: but it's under applications->system tools iirc :P
<13> intuitive enough
<13> named "change resolution" iirc
<12> steg: Really? Well. Hrm.
<9> they shouldn't consider all distributions to be one operating system
<9> because they all operate so differently
<9> the systems are completely different except the kernel
<12> It still doesn't change the fact that editing the direct xorg.conf file should have worked.
<13> duplex: and as for changing xorg.conf... I'm sure that worked reasonably well for me... are you sure it wasn't screwing up monitor detection and thought that your monitor was incapable of that resolution?
<9> well, not completely different, but enough so that training in one distribution doesn't always mean capability of admining another these days
<12> steg: yeah I actually edited the xorg.conf manually with the specs myself, that I got from the manual.
<12> It's okay. I'm back to my debian box, where everything works wonderful. I was really only helping him with the installation so he could play around and learn. I just started tweaking a little while I was there.
<14> I was wondering, does anyone happen to know where the 'fvisibility' patch for QT-X11-Free-3.3.4 happens to be at? I downloaded one version of the patch and it apparently doesn't work. It 'defines' Q_EXPORT and thats about it. I've compiled QT several times but libarts [kde package] complains that it doesn't support visibiliy and needs to be patched before KDE can be build using fvisibility itself??? I downloaded this so called path at:
<14> http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109386
<15> Hello OptimusPrime!
<14> Mats: w***up
<15> OptimusPrime: Not much. And you ?
<14> Mats: just trying to recompile KDE with fvisibility support for mucho faster loading...
<15> oh
<15> Nice.
<14> Mats: almost nice, it seems the patch for it doesn't exactly work like it should
<15> OptimusPrime: Tell me, don't you run into dificulties for using an older X distro? I mean, some software might start demanding the later versions.
<15> (I know this, since I can't download the later version of aMSN since I am not on FC3)
<15> Well, I can download, but I can't install it
<14> Mats: well I'm actually running Xfree86-4.5, that latest.. with a few modules from Xorg-7
<15> oh
<14> yea, aMSN would give you GLIBC errors...the wrong version...
<15> Yeah
<15> From the beggining, I always liked gnome more.
<14> Mats: Well, on my box, KDE generally runs faster... in terms of speed... fluxbox/xfce/KDE/gnome
<15> oh
<14> Mats: like Konq, Nautulis is a MONSTER....
<15> OptimusPrime: How long have you been using Linux?
<16> can any1 help me with a php/mysql problem? im a little new to it... apparently i need to reconfigure my php module for mysql support but cant find how to do that
<1> look in php.ini
<16> and...
