<0> oh. homework, ey? <1> yes <0> jgaddis: you just broke the rules :P <2> multiple rules <1> which one <3> sue me :P <4> management? setting deadlines for others <hehe> <0> Id rather sue happypantera for being a moron wasting our time and BW <1> i guess i have to clue by myself, thanks guys <5> m33p! <1> Jostein_: moron yourself <6> happypantera: Why would you expect someone here to do your homework for you? <1> i asked only for one command, i didn't ask you to write essay
<6> dogbert2: Nah, I'm too sleepy to really bother with the moron. <5> heh... <7> hey is steakk around? <8> dogbert2, does PDVD run on nix? haven't checked yet <9> Eh. I like mplayer. <9> mplayer pwns me. <2> ditto <5> j1m1...dunno if they have a *nix version...I can look :) <8> dogbert2, nah i don't think they have, its bundled, nothing comes bundled with nix :) <9> Yeah. I thought Nero for *nix came bundled with my DVD recorder, but it didn't... :/ <9> Alas, I was denied. I will be purchasing their software for *nix after vacation. By the by... Anyone got a pair of Motorolla HT600's configured as walkies and not as repeater clients that I could borrow for a month or so? <9> s/rolla/rola <0> oh noes. he left <9> Oh how will we know how to add to our $PATH without his expertise knowledge? <0> lol <4> read his homework <0> I thought he'd do the research for us, and then, -finally- let us all know the solution to this ancient problem <4> lol <4> our loss in the quest for knowledge <9> gunstar: Unfortunately, I'm sure he's an english major. <0> CancerMan: how so? <4> or a teacher <9> Oh yes. Computer teachers in my education have typically been people who are learning as they teach. <8> dont english majors read manuals? :) <0> heh <7> computer teachers in my experience are people who couldn't make it in the real world <10> Unfortunately, teachers don't have to actually know the subject they are teaching. They only have to know how to teach. :-/ <9> So far I havn't been able to see ANY college student read ANYTHING, including 3 INCH CHARACHTERS saying NOT to MESS with the PRINTER. <9> :D <4> my father in-law was a prof at the college here. everytime he gives advice, i poke back. "Why would I listen to advice from someone who was in college for 30 years?" <7> hehehe <7> gunstar very nice <10> lol <8> hehe <7> dogbert2 part time or fulltime? <5> lunch...it's 1823 hours here <5> part time...I do other stuff full time (extra 3-7K a semester I earn) <3> CancerMan: Haha, I can agree w/ that (the printer thing) <7> see now thats different ;) <7> you've got real world experience you can teach people <3> CancerMan: We have large signs on ours saying not to **** w/ them, and they still do. <7> at my U profs didn't even know how to fix thier own computers <8> jgaddis, maybe you and CancerMan should install and electrocution set :) <8> dogs learn that way <8> s/and/an/ <3> On my to-do list is a script to receive SNMP messages and alert our help desk guys, so that they can run to the labs real quick and catch the students in the act. "GET YOUR HANDS OFF THAT PRINTER!" <9> jgaddis: I had a 5Si, and the PIU started the typical paper jamming from tray 3. My solution was to put a sign in the bottom of the tray that said not to place paper in it, in BIG *** LETTERS. They could read the display that said Tray 3 was empty, but not the one that said not to put paper in it. Either way, they would pull paper from tray 2, put it in tray 3, then when tray 2 would empyu, the printer would blow up. <9> jgaddis: I've had NOTEPAD paper put in my printer... <3> CancerMan: Heh, we had the same issue, and put thick cardboard over the handle for tray 3 with a big red STOP sign on it and a notice saying to call the help desk (there's a phone right next to the printers) if there were any problems. <3> They'd pull the cardboard off to get to the handle to get tray 3 open. <7> heh <7> see <11> man, the things I have to go through just to play a .mid file ;P <7> you need to put a sign on it that says "$50 fine added to tuition for removing this cardboard" <9> RelDrgn: It sounds better if you run it through festival. :D <3> Fortunately, there's only a few 5Si's left so we've mostly got it taken care of.
<7> and get one of those child safety locks <7> jgaddis oh i've dealt with those whores <11> CancerMan: ... considering its a hymn, that might be pretty awesome ;) <3> ****. <8> CancerMan, or better, dress up a paper shredder to look like a printer :) <9> jgaddis: I pulled the *** **** tray and hid it in a wiring closet. When students bitched about it, I told them it was because the idiot students couldn't read. <5> bwhahaha...funny <3> I drove my truck to Lindsey's mom's house earlier so they can take it to a friends of their's in the morning to get it fixed. A few days ago, I gave her a key to my truck. I drove her car home. She just called to say that her key to my truck is in her car (which is outside). <9> jgaddis: I eventually replaced it with a 4200 with a 1500 sheet feeder. <7> jg wow <5> interesting, jgaddis <3> CancerMan: Yeah, we're replacing our 5Si's right now... can't remember the model # of the new ones, though... one sec. <3> docfoo: Heh, wouldn't be such a PITA if it wasn't a 45-minute drive to there (one way) <7> jg see i know that was coming <7> what happened to email and computers reducing the amount of paper needed in the cl***room? <3> Ahh, LaserJet 4250dtn's are the new ones. <5> docfoo...uh huh :) <3> And an extra 1500-sheet tray for each one. <3> $2,043 for each one. <3> ****ers are fast, though. <9> docfoo: The physics department runs out of books EVERY semester, and publishes the first 3 chapters as PDFs... <3> docfoo: It's mostly students printing out huge *** PowerPoint slides in our labs (and the ****ers can't seem to figure out how to get more than 1 slide per page) <9> jgaddis: Mine puts out the first page in 9 seconds, then 2 seconds per page afterward. <7> cancerman i bet that jams a few ****ing printres <5> CancerMan...wtf...how do you run out of books you can buy on half.com or some **** like that <7> jg i'm waiiting for campus's to have an entrance level course on "get your ****ing head out of your ***" <7> w0w <3> docfoo: Yeah, we could use that one. <7> and <9> dogbert2: I don't know... But they come out and print them in my lab... they're gonna be PISSED when they find out I've blocked the entire physics VLAN. <9> :D <7> "if you are going to be a dumb***, at least make sure it doesn't effect everyone else" <5> bwhahaha <7> cancerman nice <9> jgaddis: Mine's more like 33... But again, I got the 4200. We have a 4350 in recruiting. Bitch pushes paper nonstop. <3> "HP 4250dtn LaserJet 45ppm Net/80MB 1100sheets" and "HP 4250 1500-sheet ltr/lgl hi-cap tray", so each one holds 2600 sheets it seems. Much better than the 500 sheets the 5Si's hold (with the one tray) <0> CancerMan: how about just giving them strict quotes? <3> CancerMan: You at an .edu as well? <0> CancerMan: that might stop their need for printing every damn thing they see <3> Jostein_: We're going to be doing that within the next year or so, but we can't do it right now (students aren't required to login to lab PCs -- something I'm looking to change). <7> jgaddis ahh <7> thats a bitch to implement from what i've heard <9> jgaddis: Yes sir. uark.edu. <3> I made a list of about 60 things I thought should be done differently when I started here, and I'm slowly making progress. <7> jg they've been trying to do that at my U <0> jgaddis: ah <3> docfoo: We've actually found a nice piece of software that plugs into Active Directory to do it, the hard part is getting an A.D. account for every student. <7> ahh <3> We're on an old*** mainframe-based system, just six months or so ago we finally got to the point where we have LDAP accounts automatically generated for students and employees. <5> There are rules for policeman :) <3> The "go live" for our "new" system is July 1, 2009. <7> yikes <3> docfoo: Yeah, it's planned to be a 42-month project (we just officially started) and I well expect us to p*** that deadline up. <7> jg would be so nice if every time someone hit "print" a box would pop up saying "your tutition will be charged $x.xx, are you sure?" <9> jgaddis: We have NIS. <3> Anyone know/use RT and know if it support multiple functional areas? For example, I'd like to be able to reuse the same application for multiple departments (e.g. Help Desk, Marketing, Facilities, etc.)? <5> not I, jgaddis :( <3> docfoo: That's basically how it's going to work. They'll be given "x" free pages, and get charged (to their account) per page afterwards. <3> s/free pages/free pages per semester/ <3> docfoo: We have it all planned out, now we just have to get A.D. accounts for everyone. <7> haha <7> jg thats a fulltime job right there <3> docfoo: Well, it will all be automated of course. <5> how about using a RADIUS server instead? <3> Nope, gotta be A.D. <5> bleh <3> Right now, we have something like 15% of our students who are taking online courses, and our help desk is ****in' overwhelmed by students who can't remember their credentials. <9> jgaddis: Around here, we give everyone an AD account, and NIS is secondary. <7> you know its just sad how much **** has to be implemented because people don't have an ounce of common sense <3> It's going to be 50 times worse if we require every student to login to lab PCs w/ credentials as well (right now, they all auto-login under a generic account)
