<0> I downloaded the ISO images 3 days ago. <1> From a mirror? <0> umm .. hmm. **** dont remember. <2> fibs: ok, redhat 6 (my very first linux endavour) turned me of rpm forever <2> they had their chance, and they blew it with me:) <1> Gathond: Hehehe, I don't blame you. I think some of the rpm cl***ic dependency issues were allievated with the introduction of yum. <0> I had issues with my fc6 box right off the bat. The monitor continued to state "out of range" when starting up for the first time after an install. <1> LucidGuy: thats really funny, becuase i'm dealing with the exact problem this morning! <3> FC is broken by design <1> boot into single user mode, quickly exit the shell. For some reason the X server will then work. <0> fibs .. I just hit alt-f4 got a shell prompt FINALLY .. then just changed the res in xorg.conf <1> That works too. <1> Fedora Core 6 is nice, play with it for a bit. Over the last couple years the gap between Distros has narrowed. Fedora and Ubuntu are both nice. <1> You won't go horribly wrong with either choice <0> but the freaking thing wont support 1024x768 .. have to figure out what vid Card is in the old box and tweak. <1> yeah thats what you get for going bleeding edge my friend :-P
<0> I know ... I know .. <0> I still have not made a choice. Its either FC6, Ubuntu, or Debian ... Want to make a choice soon. <0> Im also not happy at the lack of documentation of the fedora.redhat.com site. <1> LucidGuy: sounds like your the kind of guy who wants to use them for yourself, and honestly thats the best way to figure out which one to use. <1> Theres much better fedora sites out there, if I wasn't stuck in a console I'd open up google and point you towards them. <0> fibs .. yah I like to tinker with ****. But I also want to experience what the xwindows world is like. Never played with it before, but I have seen some crazy desktop setups in youtube . .haha. <1> LucidGuy: both fedora and ubuntu will give you the good to play with gnome/kde/<whatever>. <0> Theres another topic .. which freak one to choose gnome/kde. I wont bug you guys with that topic. FC5 starts me with Gnome, ill stick with it for now. <1> ok LucidGuy time for me to reboot after my yum -y update. <1> :) good luck! <0> thanks .. you too. <0> Anyone have a Gnome setup like that ... http://youtube.com/watch?v=hWB5eIvM4qo <4> hi, can anyone try to help me with a simple computer hardware question ? i figured this would be the channel to ask :) <5> hrm.. linux = software ... yea, i see the connection <3> airbag: you're allowed one question free. too bad you already used it up <4> OldMonk well if thats how you answer questions then thats still an open ended one <4> :) <5> smiley faces dont erase stupidity. <4> maybe an open source channel is for open ended questions <3> airbag: why don't you just ask your question so we can kick you and be done with it? <4> OldMonk i'm trying to upgrade my p3 cheaply...thinking about getting a new mainboard and memory...then using my old graphics card HD power supply ect for the time being...do you know of anything other than mainboard and memory that i would take into consideration ? <6> lackboard 5.3 <3> why ask me, i don't know anything about hardware <6> unfortunatly it has slackware embedded but hey... cannot win them all. <4> ok..thanks anyway OldMonk <3> later <7> airbag: what manner of pIII? <7> morning * <7> s/morning/afternoon/ <6> bidding starts at $90 <7> Lion-O: on? <6> the lackboard 5000 <7> Lion-O: ? <6> :) <8> ni ni <6> Nanuq: didn't you hear the news? Ever since the airbags were brought in this has turned into an hardware channel <9> must i download 15 binary cds of debian ? <6> TRTint: yes. <10> if you can't read the install docs yes <7> Lion-O: .. okay? <11> Heh, $**** at $work <9> i have installed Windows after fedora installation, now Grub is dissapeared, i cant login to linux <9> how can i get it back <5> haha <5> that should learn you... <7> TRTint: boot from the install CD, figure it out from there <9> do i need to reinstall grub <12> Hey ho <5> hrmm remember the game Postal.. that was a fun game <12> Don't remember heh <7> safemode: heh <5> it was awesome.. came out around the time of Total Annihilation <5> you ran around towns and just shot people <5> then you could execute them as they were wounded <5> or you could torch them ...etc men/ women etc <5> banned in 10 countries beat that GTA <2> it was fun yeah, although not as much as Total annihilation, I still play that occationally <5> TA was fun until you basically didn't need to strategize anymore
<12> Any of you guys worked with Virtuozzo? <5> just whip out the big guns and that was that <13> anyone help me? <6> with what? <13> with LINUX Server ! <6> EVILSbad: Why don't you check out http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ? Maybe you'll learn how to ask more meaningful questions... <13> Lion-O: cheak this http://paste.getlinuxhelp.org/100887 ! <6> get real <6> Without even knowing what this is all about? Try asking an actual question. I don't hang out on IRC to visit websites you know. <13> i have make it psybnc but getting this ERROR <13> * Connecting to 124.29.195.10 (5000) <13> - <13> * Unable to connect to server (Connection refused) <6> obvious enough. <14> Kiddie <13> ? <6> yups <6> EVILSbad: try another channel, we're not interested in scriptkiddies trying to use compromised servers. <13> k.. <6> adyk: we don't care. Leave the autoaway msgs out of the channel please. <15> k Lion-O...sory..:| <7> Hrm. <6> Nanuq: m000 ? How's life treating you ? <7> Lion-O: hrm <7> Lion-O: Not that bad. <7> Lion-O: Finally, finally, finally ordering those contact lenses. ;) <6> hmm ;) <7> Lion-O: from .de <16> Nanuq: yet? ;) <7> yoz: hmm? <7> er, my tense is ****ed <7> s/ordering/ordered/ <16> Nanuq: we spoke about them.. like months ago ;) <7> yoz: Yeah I know. <7> yoz: Found a bloke in .de who'll ship to Canuckistan. <16> I already got myself another one for one more year =) <16> Nanuq: ah.. that's nice. <7> yoz: 8 EUR shipping for two boxes. tolerable. <16> Nanuq: for sure. <7> yoz: 27.98 EUR for the whole order. that's two boxes of six + shipping. <16> Nanuq: fair! <7> which PayPal charged me.. <7> $43.73 CAD <7> yoz: fyi, one box would cost me that. <16> Nanuq: *nod* I got them for more than 5% cheaper myself. <16> 50 even. <7> yoz: 5what? <7> yoz: heh <16> Nanuq: wrong key ;) <7> yoz: Now I need some new clothes :P <7> and shoes. dammit. bizarre size as I. <16> hehe <7> yoz: really wide shoes. they start to look not unlike clown shoes. <7> yoz: 11.5 EEE, in NA sizing <16> wow <7> yoz: I might be able to contend with 11 EEEE <7> yoz: normal is D, every E is another 1/2" <7> or is it 1/4"? <7> yoz: Yeah well, I finally buy these manner of shoes, and they're the most comfortable I've ever worn. <7> yoz: wonder if that suggests my balance is above par. maybe I should get into, say, sumo ;) <16> Nanuq: *g* i got size 7,5 <17> is it possible to configure linux to shred files when removed? if not what would be the best way to ensure no-one can get to files which you have deleted? <6> "when removed" ? That makes little sense. <17> unlinked should i say? <6> jonsmith: should you? <17> i believe i should <6> I'd say make some more sense instead... Do you wish to more dramaticly remove files or do you wish to remove linux ? <6> "shred files" ? Shred in what way? <17> as overwrite file with some kind of algorithm to a degree where they are in-decipherabble <18> i think he means something like bcwipe <19> Files can't be really removed completely, they always can be restored somehow, the only way is to melt it down to a piece of iron or whatever metal is used <6> jonsmith: there are tools for that. <6> so yes, thats perfectly possible.
