<0> cort_: #linuxhelp maybe ?
<1> whitecap no... or else I wouldn't be asking here.
<0> Clint: that is a mistake, we are NOT a substitute for your own workj
<0> Clint: misread your statement
<1> whitecap I have tried to do my work.
<2> what is the issue at hand, clint?
<0> Clint: distrowatch.org has listings of many distros and summaries of them
<1> whitecap yes, I know.. I have been there many times.. in fact, I have that place open in a tab as I am typing.
<2> I reccommend debian
<1> I haven't ever used debian, but I have used several debian based distros. I prefer using debian based distros as they are usually more up-to-date (I could use debian sid, but I still don't feel confident enough to try it.. still learning some things about linux) and have more documentation as well as a larger userbase. Ubuntu is an example.
<2> if it is pkg management you are looking for, try centOS...its based on RHEL
<3> Alright - well, anyone know how to turn off the window minimizing-maximizing animation in Gnome?
<3> i really wish i could turn that off, somehow -- i hope it doesn't require some sort of patch
<2> Somewhere in 'start here' iirc
<3> talking bout the Gnome desktop
<2> I prolly have the wrong title for it...don't recall ffhand...I know it is in the WM settings though

<2> metacity or sawfish2
<1> Steakk isn't centOS a server-oriented distro?
<1> brb
<4> oops.. be right back*
<0> Ka-bar: i bet that is harsh
<1> Ka-bar what?
<3> #linuxfriendly
<5> LSzilard: you saying we're not friendly here?
<6> what's going on here?
<7> sweet f**k all
<8> No thanks
<5> gwarday: not a whole hell of a lot right now
<5> gwarday: can I interest you in a fresh g0at?
<5> or how about some blue carpet?
<6> no thanx...i just had some
<9> sal
<9> e cineva pe aici?
<5> Exploit-: English on this channel
<9> ok
<9> i need a scan archive for a root and a flood arhive
<5> a what?
<9> if you can help me with that
<9> Scann Archive!!!
<5> hacker tools? root kits? stuff like that?
<9> yess
<5> **** off
<9> tar.gz
<5> we don't do that here
<9> you know
<6> hack the planet
<5> Exploit-: **** off
<6> Free Kevin
<5> gwarday: you too
<10> gwarday: there's a channel for hackers wannabe
<5> must be rotard hour
<11> hey! how can i transform spaces into tabs, using sed (or anything else) (from a piped input)
<5> dj_damix: read the sed docs, learn how regular expressions work, and write a script to do it. Or ask google if something like that already exists.
<11> well, i'm having a hard time understanding sed, so i thought learning by example
<5> well, I don't have any examples handy.
<5> google for some examples
<5> In fact, I'll bet that if you do this: http://www.google.com/search?q=sed+tabs+spaces+examples
<5> you may find something useful
<12> sed isn't really something you can learn by example though
<12> you actually need to understand regex to do anything useful with it
<5> blueroo: that's why IBM DeveloperWorks has a web page called "sed by example"?
<10> what causes a delayed failed write?
<13> i'm wondering, is hcid supposed to be running on the background if i don't have bluetooth, or can i safely remove it?
<14> dj_damix: sed -e 's/\ /\t/g'
<14> dj_damix: '\ ' is a space, '\t' is a tab
<15> atompngn: no spoonfeeding here
<14> Lion-0: excuse me.
<14> dj_damix: Oh, and go read sed and pcre mans, if you know what's good for you!
<0> Lion-O: mind a message ?
<15> whitecap: not at all
<16> people in here who use convert to do batch resizes of photos - ?
<16> or is there a one stop shop program which not only manages your photos, but also is able to ****ing resize them?!
<17> hahahah http://i7.tinypic.com/20u7e3t.jpg
<16> sfw?
<17> yeah

<14> depends where you work, muahaha
<16> hahaha
<7> anyone in here got a PHP script for resizing images?
<5> I must be tired... I don't get it.
<14> Ka-bar: It wasn't that funny.
<5> Tamahome: I think "gallery" is written in PHP and it does resizing stuff to make thumbnails and intermediate files. Rip some code off from that. :)
<7> **** that ****
<17> gallery is in PHP, but it uses NetPBM and imagemagick to do the heavy lifting
<17> the PHP is just for serving content and organizing
<14> I was going to say, surely there is an imagemagick module for PHP
<17> it's not a module, php just calls whichever image utilities you tell it to
<7> not sure if the host I am running this site from will have IM
<14> There are modules for php though.
<18> PHP does have some image handling modules - GD2
<5> TenBaseT: well, yeah, I'd use GD or imagemagick from within PHP to do image manipulation. I don't think you'd want to go doing that image crap directly in PHP code. It would be horribly messy, not to mention slow as a turd rolling uphill
<7> but I don't want to write a resizer.
<7> moreover, I don't have time
<17> just call 'convert'
<17> it's part of imagemagick
<18> or use GD2, like I said
<17> or 'mogrify'
<7> like I said, I don't know if the hosting has IM
<7> guess I'll have to look at it later
<16> yeah, i checked out fspot, and digikam - they are pretty nice, but nothing apart from cropping, and red eyes.
<16> you'd think a batch resize would be an obvious function
<19> hey sean
<16> (or maybe the ui is so horrendous that i haven't found it yet)
<7> hey Hans
<19> what's up?
<16> woo . first names basis, niiice
<7> looking for a drop-in PHP image resizing script... I don't have time to write one
<5> Tamahome: http://just****inggoogleit.com
<7> ....and I just found one
<7> Ka-bar: sod off :P
<19> ok, this is scary, i'm pondering using a 300GB HD as a boot drive
<19> because my main data store will be on a RAID 5 array built out of 4 320GB SATA drives
<12> why Raid-5 ?
<19> so I can lose a drive and not lose my data
<10> is Linspire Linux ok?
<7> because $HOME/pr0n is THAT IMPORTANT
<12> have you considered Raid 1+0 ?
<12> that will be faster
<19> blueroo: that wastes a drive
<12> depends on whether you consider the trade-off for real speed and throughput to be a waste :)
<19> blueroo: besides, I'm just going to be streaming it out 100BaseT, it's not like I need an array that's ludicrously fast
<12> video?
<19> blueroo: media, yeah
<12> fun
<7> that's one ****ing huge media server
<12> that's tiny by modern standards
<19> this is for my house
<12> I know folks with multi-terabyte media servers
<12> 4T in their house
<19> heh
<19> all this pricipitated because my old file server is on its last legs
<19> it's a dual PII 400, with at least one dead CPU fan,
<12> heh
<19> a deathstar, and other things wrong with it
<7> Ben: sick.
<8> Sounds like my file server
<8> Except for the whole bad CPU fan thing
<20> My media server runs on a 250gb drive. But that's because I delete stuff after watching.
<19> so it's getting replaced with a used athlon XP 3000, 1GB of RAM, a 300GB boot drive, and the 4 SATA drives for its file store
<7> my XPMCE box only has 120GB, and 20GB is set aside for the system drive
<8> a gig of ram for a file server?
<19> reality: it was cheaper than buying less ram for it
<7> a bit of a waste aye
<12> not that much of a waste
<19> but I also use it for prototyping database apps and so forth, so 1GB isn't totally out of line
<12> ram is never wasted on a good unix system
<8> Strider: Don't have any systems with like 256 in them that actually need a gig, do you?
<7> oh so it's an application server as well
