<0> yea, I dont care for redundency, Just wanted to create a really m***ive, really really fast fs for writing huge files and compiling and such. <1> safemode: try postmark <2> safemode: who cares what it benches ? does it fly for encoding and compiling ? that's all that matters <3> whitecap TGIT! <2> ?topic message docfu your questions, he's so bored he'll google for you <2> damn shift key ;) <1> postmark was the best benchmarking app we found for testing reading/writing many, many small files, (ie. mail server) but it may do the trick for large file writing etc.. too. <4> what? <0> sequential transfers to raid0 is very nearly 2x single disk when used with sata <4> i think the disks wont be the bottleneck there. :) <0> it's the less than sequential transfers that i think i'm having a problem with. dbench showed lower perf than single disk. i'm gonna do postmark with filesizes between 64kB and 1MB <5> hm... tried striping across more than 2 disks? <0> I only have two sata disks right now. and right now i have close to 700GB of storage on this one box <0> so i'm not hurting to get more sata drives right now
<0> Cynic: i'm doing 50,000 trans, 500 simultaneous files between 64kB-1MB, buffered io. pata drive now. then raid0 then sata. <6> safemode: it just don't like you <2> Nanuq: damn, you guys are heading conservitive also ? <1> safemode: so, no difference using postmark? <0> ata: <0> 17152.97 megabytes read (37.95 megabytes per second) <0> 17401.42 megabytes written (38.50 megabytes per second) <0> ata/Data: <0> that's the pata disk <0> that's not bad, but then, none of my benchmarks showed that the disk was slow. Trying the raid now. <0> too bad it's not a threaded program. hits 100% usage on either proc every now and then <0> though, the benchmark doesn't cause enough cpu bound load to get the processor off half speed <0> is that like a really gay biker version of Buffy? <7> bsims: Willow and Carter are females, right? <8> willow of off buffy Alyson Hannagan <8> Amanda Tapping plays Samantha Carter <7> Dude. Your fantasies have way too many credits at the end. <0> Data: <0> 17152.97 megabytes read (49.86 megabytes per second) <0> 17401.42 megabytes written (50.59 megabytes per second) <0> dude, alyson hannigan is mine ..MINE <8> safemode: you can have the original I just want the clones and the template to make more <0> it appears that random access/write/read etc is much closer to single disk performanec with raid0 <0> only sequential seems to really be accelerated. <8> safemode: makes sense when you think about seek time times number of drives <0> it really depends on how the data is requested/size and how the md device takes the data recieved from the drives and puts it in order <8> damn so much for my theory <8> not bad for ex rectum If I say so myself <0> well seek time plays a part, but i think if all the files in the benchmark were big. then i'd see better performance than with a lot of small files. <8> ex rectum: latin for out of my *** <8> hrm than doesn't that almost scream seek time? or am I thinking again <9> Jeez ... its so crowed in here, I can hardly breath ... ;) <8> me moves nearer to misch and farts and moves away <8> er deal <8> misch: want some shiraz? <9> bsims: California? Kendell-Jackson? <8> Australia <8> Black Swan <9> Argh .. sugar water .. <0> bsims: seek times would play less of a part compared to number of repeated requests across multiple disks and having to wait for them all to finish that transaction before asking for another piece of data. ok, think seek time as fixed on all disks. you get big files to read/write whatever randomly. md can slice the file and stripe rapidly across all the disks for the duration of the file...but between files it has to wait for <0> the disks to finish writing and all that before moving on <8> Ah <8> misch: shiraz is the only wine I can stand, If I want oak I have whiskey <8> Mmmm Laphroiag... /me likes strong flavors <9> bsims: I prefer bordeaux ;) <8> can't stand teh stuff <0> so seek time would have the same hit on both situations, but md is forced to wait until all the disks are finished with the current striping (read/write) process before moving to the next one... i believe. This alone isn't a huge perf hit, but multiple that by tons of tiny files spread across the disk. and you lose the sequential perf gain. (less striping = less perf and less size = less striping) <8> safemode: makes sense
<9> bsims: Of course not. Americans are more used to sugar water :D <0> mmm pepsi <8> misch: I drink Laphroaig, I hardly think you would call an Islay single malt "sugar water" <9> bsims: ... or hard liquer ;) <8> hey bourbon is supposed to be cheap and strong <8> we made it so that we wouldn't have to pay for gin <9> bsims: I don't drink fuel. <0> cost has nothing to do really with proof <8> safemode: of course not <0> but i like my vodka 80+ <10> hello guys <10> newbie in linux... =) <9> dennis_: Hmm ... <10> how can i install a pkg.pl? =( <10> hi misch <1> dennis_: a .pl file is a perl script, not a package. Sometimes packages come with perl install scripts, in which case you probably just need to run it. <1> dennis_: you should go do some reading at http://tldp.org <10> how can i install a xxxxx-pkg.pl? =( <1> jesus <10> cynic> it says here its a package... <9> dennis_: What's the full name of the file? <10> misch>vainst-pkg.pl <1> dennis_: as i thought, that's an installation script *for* a package. <1> if you want to know how to run it, "man perl" <10> cynic> tnx cynic... ill try <0> holy ****. it is the end of the world <0> cash in people, get laid and ****ed up.. the world is endinng <9> safemode: Why is that? <1> safemode: you sorted the raid probs out? <0> i read a comment on slashdot that wasn't totally ****ing retarded...not just one..but multiple ones. that made sense. the one time i risk reading slashdot and this happens... it's the end times <0> http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/01/24/215238&from=rss <0> no, my raid probs aren't sorted out.. i think this is just a function of raid0, I think i may need raid 0+1 or 10 in order to get the best of both worlds for random and sequential perf gains <10> cynic> its working now.. tnx... <4> bed. later. <1> dennis_: "thanks" <1> safemode: mm, may be right there, my RAID theory isn't too up to scratch these days <1> seeya D-side <11> you're gonna die, honkies! <0> woot <1> i thought that was a given <0> evil scary thunderstorms are brewing <1> wow, vodafone sms in .nz is down, apparently. that's..... big. <12> yeah since recently .au and .nz are very much into vodafones <0> hrm.. 15 minutes ago, perfectly fine out, now there's hail as big as 1" falling <0> just waiting for the tornado <1> cheeksy: in .nz at least, they're the "lesser of two evils" -- ie. we get to give our money to someone other than Telecom NZ, who is the monopoly (non-cell) phone provider <12> china at least there is a choice. <1> safemode: so, the world really IS ending, eh? <1> cheeksy: there is? it's not "The Peoples' Telephone Service"" <12> no <9> safemode: You must be in the North East? <12> China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, SDMA... few more <1> well, there ya go... <0> Cynic: luckily the lightning around here prefers the wooded area, which surprisingly enough, no electrical lines are around <0> misch: indeed <0> though whenever it hits the trees in the woods, my UPS's kick on to stop the surge and the house shakes <12> there is such thing as local mobile phone that is like a house number so rates are really really low but cant use outside of a city you buy it from <9> safemode: I was checking radar ;) <12> misch: i am eating, i will choke :o/ <9> cheeksy: what are you eating? <12> misch: lamb kebab and syrian fried rice <12> we went to arabic restaurant yesterday, there was a lot food left, so we took it home <12> :o) <13> genteee <13> una ayudaaaaaa!!!! <12> really? <3> cheeksy! <12> docfu! <13> como instalo en mi pc el <3> i can pway ode to joy on me b*** guitar
