<0> and now isn`t the usual /etc/init.d/mysql
<1> it's not started from the initscript? that's kinda bad
<0> I know
<0> how can i find where is the start and stop ?
<2> started from rc*.d is it not?
<1> start by maybe using locate or find, files with mysql in the name
<0> is a debian and it should be /etc/init.d/mysql
<3> unless an idiot admin did it "his way"
<1> might have compiled mysql on his own for performance reasons
<4> as long as "his way" conforms to the Unix way, it's ok. not putting **** that runs during startup in /etc/init.d is not the Unix way, and is thus Wrong.
<1> can think of a million different reasons why it might not be there, but I agree that it was a big oversight on his part
<3> aye
<1> so, rather than bitching about what was wrong with how the last guy did it, why not fix it? I started suggesting places to look
<4> there are always reasons, but few times is divirging from the Unix way, a Right reason
<0> Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
<0> Your MySQL connection id is 891 to server version: 5.0.21

<0> done..10x
<2> 10 times?
<3> huh ?
<4> that's ..........
<3> silly
<1> anyways, mum is bugging me to do the dishes so I'd best do that now
<4> *whip sound*
<1> Ed :P~
<2> *i live in my basement sound*
<1> I don't.
<1> it's Sunday, I go home for dinner.
<2> **** typos
<1> pretty stupid to refuse a free meal, no? :P
<2> in my mums basement of course
<3> a new angel, amazing
<5> alo db2 :)
<4> ok, Now we just need some people to dress up as hobbits and start talking about how elves are hot and about how they just finished their collection of Transformers toys and dvds and we'll be ready to all kill ourselves for the betterment of humanity
<5> You just described my typical saturday night...
<6> hi *
<3> Ey mod!
<7> hey Lion-O :^)
<2> night all
<3> hmm
<8> hey i put a 320gb drive in a RH 7.2, made a primary partition, then when i did mkfs -j /dev/hdb1, its only 126gb
<8> what did i do wrong?
<7> Grubsy: "mkfs"? is that the command you used exactly?
<7> Grubsy: also... RH 7.2? why?
<8> ./sbin/mkfs -j /dev/hdb1
<4> when you made the partition, it probably wasn't the total drive
<7> hm...
<8> cause the system is already runnin rh 7.2 and i needed more spare
<9> safemode: hey, ever used debpartial-mirror?
<4> fdisk /dev/hdb and check
<4> no
<7> of course, the 137GB limit
<4> mod-: obviously,
<7> Grubsy: what's the hardware?
<8> safemode i tried adding another and it said all space was used
<4> that damn 137GB limit ...always creeping in
<8> WD 320GB IDE
<4> grubsy: sure, but it may be used by other partitions already created
<4> fdisk will tell you
<7> Grubsy: no, the processor / motherboard i mean
<8> some asus board with a p3 1133
<8> yes safemode
<8> can i get past that 137gb limit?
<10> me slaps mplayer and libtheora
<7> Grubsy: AFAIK no
<8> its that just cause its rh 7.2?
<7> Grubsy: no, it's the hardware
<8> and i cant make 3 x 100gb partitions?
<8> oh...
<1> 'lo Vas
<8> u sure??? i just thought that limit was a software thing
<7> hey Sean

<8> ill look if there are any bios updates
<7> good idea
<3> rh 7.2 ?
<3> don't tell me; you're going to use this for an internet server relay station huh ?
<3> Emerson: howdy doody
<11> Lion-O, how goes it?
<8> mod-
<8> i just checked, i have another system here with the same hardware and it also has a 320gb drive. it is using all the space, but is running Fedora 4
<3> Emerson: close to wasted, very good ;)
<3> Emerson: and you sir? ;)
<11> not to shabby.. got mediawiki up and running :)
<11> Lion-O, starting realize that I do have a good base knowledge of mysql
<3> Emerson: COOL! its whats poweting nekonets website, pretty nice program if you ask me.
<11> Lion-O, defently.. Im actually testing it out to see if it will work for the "knowledge db" at work
<7> Grubsy: oh, interesting
<11> the only thing Im really gonna have to pay attention to is permissions
<8> could it be cause i have an old kernal version?
<8> Linux version 2.4.9-31
<3> Emerson: well, for whats it worth I'm >< close to finishing a nice 'bot like' interface for it. noyhing too fancfy yet (just checking and allowing people to request participation) but who knows.. ;-)
<3> Grubsy: ever bothered to check the current kernel versions? no? figures
<11> Lion-O, what interface is the bot?
<3> Emerson: irc like, the main aim isn't mediawiki btw.
<11> lol
<3> Emerson: the main idea is to give people an option to apply for "editorial powers"
<8> no i havent Lion-O, is there anyway i can fix it without upgrading the kernal? its a live server and i don't wanna break stuff + i cant just take it offline
<11> Lion-O, ahh
<12> I'm having a bear of a time installing debian on a DL140 without a cd, I put a cd in and install, after it is installed, I removed the cdrom, then when I boot I get kernel panic finding root, I can see the drive device ids are changing, so i tried USB flash drive, and I get similar problems with that as well. I've tried adjusting grub/fstab when using the cd when it changes
<3> Grubsy: there's no way
<8> ok....
<3> Grubsy: is this system connected to the internet by any chance?
<8> yep
<3> Grubsy: then you're a ****ing moron anyway.
<8> why?
<11> TTalen, "kernel panic finding root" .. how about you google the exact erro you are getting.
<3> Grubsy: that kernel is ancient and has quite some nasty *REMOTE* root exploits.
<3> Grubsy: to put it into wording you'll understand: any kiddie who gets interested in that box can compromise it.
<8> even if its behind our cisco pix?
<3> Grubsy: does a firewall stop dataflows like http and such ?
<12> Emerson, I have, I've read about 50 different posts
<8> depends
<11> Grubsy, depends on what ports are accessable by the outside world
<3> Grubsy: bingo
<8> exactly, i think only 22 is
<3> oh my god.
<11> TTalen, and you haven't found a fix for it, I dont think you are looking hard enough, or know how to read
<3> Grubsy: and ofcourse you never upgraded ssh either did you ?
<12> I've tried 5 different fixes recommneded,
<3> Grubsy: I bet you don't even know what the security reports like the ones on security focus are all about.
<11> TTalen, you still have failed to give us any real information to help you.
<12> which botheres me is when I use USB Flash drive to install which shows up as scsi there is no way it is confusing with the hda drive
<12> the exact error is cannot open /dev/console no such file sbin/init:432
<10> well at least it is not a 2.0.x kernel :P
<8> probably not Lion
<11> TTalen, which debian CD are you using?
<10> gah lagged
<12> which the first time iwth the cdrom, root was /hdc and when you remove the cdrom it is hda so I adjusted fstab/grub to fix it and still doesn't find it so I went to flash
<12> 3.1 r2 net.iso
<12> if i keep the cdrom (when I use cd to install) in the machine it works perfectly fine reboot after reboot
<11> TTalen, what are you using this thing for?
<8> dude im no security expert, its not my responsibilty
<3> Grubsy: you're an ***hole
<11> TTalen, ie what is the purpose of this machine?
<10> probably because your cr-rom has a jumper set to be the master drive
<3> Grubsy: you claim to administrate that box.
<12> Was setting up an environment to test drbd over traditional mysql repl
<12> I have two dl140 g2 but they have no cdrom
<8> so did i Lion? you paste the line where i said that
<3> Grubsy: and its just because ***holes like yourself ("its not my job to secure it") that the rest of the Internet gets crap like spam and all such that.
<12> I have a cdrom from another dl140 i was going to use jsut to install and move it to the next one, that's where the problem started, so I just went to making a USB FLash installer, which works great till you reboot without it
<3> Grubsy: you're even too dumb to reliaze if that box is used as a major spam relay. Let alone; you wouldn't even know how to FIX it.
<8> dude, we have guys responsible for that, i was gonna p*** the info on to them
