<0> heh
<1> 1. i'm in india. 2. i need it for the rare times my dsl goes down. 3. i'm not ``u''
<0> somehow i dont think the shipping is worth it
<2> ok
<2> i'm sorta desperate
<1> i mean, exporting modems to canada... heh
<3> hello there. I have installed Mandriva 2006 on a small mini-PC I have here. It has 96MB RAM a 13GB harddisk and a 400mhz Celeron Processor. The distro is fully installed and working just fine. I have connected a network cable to my switch and my switch shows a LED
<3> indicating the presence of a node. the ifcfg-eth0 has all the IP information required, and I did a "Service network restart". I rebooted several times. Still, I can't access the internet. Pinging also does not work, it keeps timing out. Same goes for when the box is pinged from another computer on my network. Help appreciated.
<1> SeBsZ: dmesg ; ifconfig ; netstat -rn
<4> and that led means nothing.
<3> Well, I can't paste it anywhere since I don't have internet access, but in a nutshell ifconfig it says eth0, with the HWaddr and the correct inet addr of 192.168.0.100 , bcast of 192.168.0.255, mask of 255.255.255.0. I don't see the gateway anywhere which should be 192.168.0.1, maybe that is why (something wrong with gateway settings?). Other than that it says it has received 36.8KiB :S and Interrupt:4
<1> Revenger: no?
<4> just that there is a physical link,
<3> Oh and if it is of any use, mii-tool says eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
<3> let me try dmesg
<1> if it has received other computers on the lan should be able to ping it

<1> as long as you have the right IPs
<4> unless the network info is correct.
<3> dmesg shows a huge list of tulip_stop_rxtx() failed
<4> incorret. bah
<2> is there a dhcp server?
<4> tulip?
<3> yes the IPs are all correct. No DHCP
<4> condolences.
<3> Yes it says tulip, don' ask me what that is
<1> i'd google for that dmesg message then
<1> tulip is a chipset
<3> in fact, the full lien says
<1> ethernet chipset
<2> i like dhcp, personally, it's easier to configure for, in my opinion
<4> driver
<3> 0000:01:04.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed
<1> Revenger: however it shows received data
<4> OM: some tulip cards do that to you
<1> SeBsZ: try forcing mii-tool or ethtool to force a speed instead of auto-negotiating
<4> SeBsZ: what NIC is in there exactly ?
<3> Revenger: Davicom PCI Fast Ethernet (DM9102)
<3> OldMonk, how would I force mii-tool ?
<3> actually Davicom Ethernet DM9102A
<1> SeBsZ: the man probably reveals all
<3> The man always does :)
<1> i know ethtool has some way to force a link speed
<4> here we go.
<4> Davicom Semiconductor directly distributes their Linux DM9102 driver
<5> mii-tool eth0 100baseFD ?
<3> OldMonk, I don't think I need to force a speed. As I said, running mii-tool returns eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control
<4> it now uses the wrong one. tulip.
<4> which handles the card incorrectly.
<1> f3ew: FD is dangerous, i'd go for HD
<3> RelDrgn, thats great, I found the driver as well. I even have it on there already, it's just that I don't know how to install it. There is a makefile, but when I run make I get all kinds of errors. I try again alright?
<1> /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip/dmfe.c:#define PCI_DM9102_ID 0x91021282 /* Davicom DM9102 ID */
<3> thats where I should go?
<1> Revenger: seems to be tulip all right
<4> OM: yes. but this is the /A Card.
<1> SeBsZ: force link speed first
<4> they have their own driver.
<1> ewww!
<3> alright. Tell me which speed 100baseTx-HD ?
<4> i am not saying that tulip.c isnt able. google suggests otherwise tho.
<6> right. Now I recall why grub can have advantages and why a lilo user should always keep a knoppix or other live cd around :P
<6> At least ubuntu has gained some esteem from me :)
<1> SeBsZ: try that, then 10Mb/s if that doesn't work. if it still doesn't work, here's a piece of rope, a convenient fan to tie it to and a stool to jump off from
<4> forgot to sync the bootsector ? :P
<3> I tried the half-duplex, still no luck.
<6> Revenger: hm, hm.. naaah, I *always* sync. I just forgot to re-run lilo :)
<7> oh. damn. he's back
<4> OM: for example, there are more than one drivers for realtek cards :P
<1> realtek is an abomination in the name of ethernet cards
<6> OldMonk: oh?
<6> OldMonk: I really like that chipset, never had any problems with 'm.
<3> OldMonk, 10Mb/s doesn't work either. So apart from jumping off a stool what should I do? Do you still think the tulip thing is wrong?
<1> Lion-O: they're win-ethernet's -- they offload all the processing to the driver
<0> 8139s?
<6> OldMonk: not the realteks I know.
<0> if so, OM's entirely right

<1> D-side: yeah, those
<1> SeBsZ: i'd go with Revenger's words of wisdom then
<0> they're utter crap, and whats worse, seem to be the default chipset on motherboards.
<6> hmm 8)
<1> Lion-O: it's possible the newer ones have some brains built into the chipset
<1> D-side: ...because they're cheap
<3> alright.
<0> OldMonk: of course., its just a damn shame.
<6> OldMonk: well, perhaps. no idea, can't really comment in too much detail but for me realteks always 'work'. Whether in Linux, Solaris or Windows. Which is basicly all which matters to me.
<0> though most people liekly have no idea.
<8> i've been capturing >90mbit/s of traffic on a single 8139 without noticing much of cpu load or dropped packets
<8> so they cant be that bad
<6> tojoe: thats my idea also.
<0> i'm just glad to see you're happy with them. :)
<1> Lion-O: they work for me too, but they're deprecated for high-volume servers
<1> prefer intel
<6> D-side: thats a very nice way of calling someone an idiot ;-)
<0> Lion-O: oh now really, would *I* do that?
<6> D-side: I heard you between the lines, there is no denying! ;-))
<6> </paranoia mode> :P
<0> So long as I don't admit to anything, I can't be held accountable.
<0> so, afk!
<8> i have e1000's at home now though, the 8169 was rather poorly supported back when i tried it
<6> aaaah, this is good.
<6> D-side: see you around
<1> for instance, on this computer i'm using: 0000:02:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
<6> I finally got my X back.
<1> of course, what the card's mainly used for is a 256Kb/s pppoe connection, with occ***ional bursts of copying movies to laptops :)
<0> heh
<6> hehe
<1> i tried reading that book, but it was too soppy
<6> OldMonk: lets just say that in situations like these I really appreciate my backup scheme.
<0> OldMonk: the WRAP sbc i've got has three of the 8139s in it.
<1> WRAP?
<0> for use as a gateway w/ my 3mbit dsl, they function okay.
<0> http://pcengines.ch/wrap.htm
<1> i have the older machine which i can backup to, but it doesn't have a monitor anymore and i can't remember its IP :)
<8> now if intel dual and quad port nics wouldnt be so f'n expensive...
<1> oh wait, the IP is in a script
<0> thats no excuse when we have nmap -P
<1> j00 want m3 2 haxqu0r my 0wn n3t!??!??
<0> if ping = hacking, rotards = rocket scientists
<9> heh
<4> Shiva.
<1> shiva?
<10> is lspci working properly for everyone else? apparently I'm not getting any resolution to device names... just numerical IDs
<0> as in, the goddess or the ras equipment?
<0> heh
<11> falchion: hows that podcast?
<4> Shiva. you know. evil chick. blood sacrifices.
<1> D-side: god, actually
<9> Ritalin: Slow. Gonna be doing "The Stoner Review" as a podcasdt with my neighbor first, as practice, before doing the writer's one.
<1> Revenger: your knowledge of hindu mythology is abysmal, to be charitable :)
<11> falchion: did you get your mixer?
<4> sue me :P
<1> Revenger: nah, i'll set kali onto you
<4> ahh
<4> kali. i always mix them up.
<9> Ritalin: I went with an M-Audio MobilePre device. Works great. And I got the behringer C1, which is sweet.
<1> ``does the name pavlov ring a bell?''
<9> OldMonk: Kali the God or kali the program? ;)
<3> Revenger, I have the driver that goes by the name "DM9102A_linux24_v137" . It contains a number of .o files, one .c file and a Makefile as well as a readme.txt. I tried running Make Org as that is what the readme says and I just get a bunch of stuff, then some errors and some more stuff and then it ends with "make: *** [org] Error 1"
<9> ow, ****er
<6> sees
<6> and oceans
<11> falchoin: condenser mics are the way to go
