<0> Which, for some reason, has made it a lot more interesting.
<1> Seems I am not the only one to come to this conclusion : http://www.betadot.com/voip-phreaking-next-big-exploits/2005-399/
<2> Tron: http://www.voipsa.org/Activities/taxonomy.php
<2> Tron: More than just that
<0> Well yeah voip is going to be the new generation of phreaking, but I seriously doubt oldschool phreaking will ever die. In fact, it can't, as long as people are still actively exploring information on tones, switches, and telco offices.
<1> rhowe: Oh yes, of course that'll just be a subset of the potential for stupidity.
<2> VOIP is going to be a nightmare - nobody can agree on a standard method for encryption and signature, because of things like NAT, legal requirements, and carriers trying to stay in business by inventing business models around VOIP which are technically difficult and inappropriate
<0> And asterisk is just an amazing piece of software if you ask me. I've helped set one up on virtual linux servers, but as soon as I move, going to setup one with the hardware, and make a physical pbx.
<2> As a result, virtually all VOIP kit is going to run unencrypted, and security of end devices is going to be abysmal (look at your typical DSL router, for example)
<2> duplex_: I fear that asterisk's code will be much like mplayer's - very, very hackerish
<1> Indeed.
<2> duplex_: And unmaintainable
<0> rhowe: It already kinda is.
<2> duplex_: Still, it has quite an amazing feature set
<2> duplex_: "will be" as in "when I take a look at it"
<2> :P

<3> rhowe: I greet you in the name of peace also.
<2> Pizbit: Interesting. I greet you in the name of cheese.
<0> rhowe: It's a small team that maintains the asterisk code I believe. If they want to program in code that's almost impossible for others to read, so be it I guess..... good luck to them, I don't know how they got this far.
<3> rhowe: Edam?
<2> Pizbit: Hm, some soft cream cheese I have in the 'fridge
<2> Pizbit: I doubt it cl***es as real cheese
<3> Too old?
<2> Pizbit: Nah, too generic
<3> Figures.
<1> So, we move on from a slightly interesting thread about phreaking VOIP, to.... cheese.
<1> Cunts.
<4> What's wrong with cheese?
<0> rhowe: I've been thinking about hooking up an amateur radio to a linux box with an asterisk pbx hooked up to it also, as a patch to the phone line. I know lots of ham clubs do autopatches, dont know what they use to do it though.
<5> hiya evilelf
<6> q
<7> hi all
<4> heh
<8> Sagoro
<4> What?
<8> What what ?
<4> I dunno
<4> still not awak :)
<4> awake, even
<8> Good :)
<4> I don't think I like working
<9> you'd be a frreak if you did
<4> I mean...I like what I do...I just don't like working
<9> read my last line :P
<4> I need to become independantly wealthy
<8> what was it again, "Bill, it's not because I am lazy, I just don't care." -- Office Space
<9> i need to get out from work and go in my hometown, my grandmother p***ed away last night
<9> the one that raised me :(
<4> that blows
<4> and here I am bitching about work
<4> tavi-san: Where is your hometown?
<10> tavi-san: sorry to hear that :( I wish you all the best there....
<11> Lion-O: remember the puzzle the other day? I had the correct answer :)
<8> Yikes, 255 upgraded, 15 newly installed, 3 to remove and 3 not upgraded. Need to get 213MB of archi
<10> K_F: hm, don't recall..
<11> Lion-O: http://www.kfwebs.net/news/392/Crypto+challenge
<1> Sunblade, Lion-O, K_F ...
<11> heya tron
<10> K_F: aaah, that one. I recall that, yeah. Cool, congrats!
<10> yo Tron / Sunblade
<10> K_F: guess we'll have to triple secure our encrypted irc network now, eh? ;-)
<11> hehe
<8> heya tron, Lion-O
<10> this is ridiculous.. Whenever I logon to X (kdm) then it fails to initialize the devices, root gets the job done fine. So now I look at the logs (udev) and it only creates /dev/vcs9 and vcsa9, only to immediatly delete them again! :)
<12> haha
<11> hehe
<12> reminds me of the debian package for nvidia that uninstalls and reinstalls the driver everytime you boot
<10> sometimes I really don't understand this anymore.. Still like it though 8)
<10> oh no, a fellow demoner! :P
<12> of course if you manually compile them they just get removed every boot ..... leaving you wondering why the **** x wont start everytime you reboot
<10> wishes: hehehe
<12> i ended up fixing husbands computer of that problem :D

<10> wishes: yeah, I had that in the beginning.. You can overcome that though by using "make-kpkg" to compile them, and installing the package it creates.
<12> i dont do kernels in packages generally, just compile em
<10> wishes: so do I, but Debian has a tool for that which creates a package from your configuration.
<12> its the actual nvidia driver deb thats apt-get'able. it sets up something in init.d
<12> not the kernel
<10> wishes: yes, the kernel.
<12> no its not the kernel
<11> geeks..
<10> wishes: "make-kpkg" (make kernel pkg). You use it to compile/package your kernel and all the modules you need (like the NVidia module).
<12> it was a seperate deb for the nvidia module
<10> wishes: *nod*. I'm using that too, only the source, not the binaries. (/usr/src/nvidia-kernel-source.tar.gz)
<12> i know what make-kpkg is all about ive used it before :)
<12> i prefer the source for kernel and modules anyway
<12> cut down on half the crap
<12> the servers have moduleless kernels too :D
<10> wishes: aye, same here. I just like the way Debian allows you to keep "package compliant" like this.
<12> yeah
<12> it is good
<10> wishes: Ever tried this on RedHat by any chance? ;) I'm still baffled when I basicly read (YEARS ago mind you) to simply "rpm --uninstall --force" to get rid of the kernel in order to install my own.
<12> nope
<12> weird
<12> i try to avoid redhat
<12> if they want to use redhat i want to work elsewhere :)
<12> usually they come around to my point of view
<12> :D
<10> wishes: yeah, and from that moment on I could keep on using "--depend" because everything depended on the kernel ;) but this has been a long time ago 8-) HA HA HA
<12> heheh
<10> wishes: you're an even bigger geek than I am so it seems ;)
<12> whys that?
<8> tojoe
<10> wishes: When I got into contact with a RH based server at work I simply maintained it ;)
<13> Sunblade
<12> its just called standerds! I have standerds!
<12> must be easy to maintain, debian or freebsd or something thats easily updated
<12> and relativly secure
<10> wishes: hehe :)
<8> ok somebody swap my tape cartridge please, I am to lazy to wander off to the sever room
<12> eject -t ?
<12> i suppose i outta go try sleeping again :/
<12> nighty night
<10> wishes: sleep well!
<8> waaa
<14> `date --rfc-3339=date`
<14> eep
<1> woohoo!
<14> Tron: not even code form work ;)
<1> wlfshmn: It doesn;t matter.
<1> s/;/'/
<14> somehow the randomness of my pastes will unveil my secret designs eh
<1> wlfshmn: No no, I'm using Chaos theory to randomly add all your code segments in, at random positions. Combined with a steaming hot mug of tea, I shall eventually come up with the Improbability Drive. ;)
<8> $(date --rfc-3339=date) is new notation :P
<1> New notation can **** my gonads
<1> And hum, too.
<14> Sunblade: ah well, I must say that my scripting knowledge is horrifically poor
<14> Sunblade: I -never- script, for some reason
<9> http://www.penguin.stwebsite.net/?msg=aGVsbG8sIHdoYXRcJ3MgdXA/IDop
<8> wlfshmn: maybe because you aren't an admin but a developer ? :)
<1> Sunblade: `date --rfc-3339=date` seems to me to be much more readable than $(date --rfc-3339=date).
<14> Sunblade: probably ;)
<1> Actually, in a shell script I'd write DATE=`date --rfc-3339`.
<8> Tron: I got it from the manual
<14> Tron: the $() though is easier to type, since I don't have to find the right bloody accent ;)
<1> In fact, I'm currently crafting a sheell script right now which by sheer coincidence is using just such a format.
<1> shell even.
<1> NameOfDay=`date +%a`; ... DayOfMonth=`date +%e`; ... for example.
<8> I really don't care, I like them both and you can use them both.
<8> It's all a matter of convenience.
<1> Sunblade: I'm just saying I dislike $( blah ) :)
<8> and/or habbit
