<0> hye all
<1> PolarWolf: got a ups? ;D
<2> yoz: No :)
<3> hm, I can still type, that security radar thing needs more java
<1> PolarWolf: risky. ;)
<4> hey, I got this process that eating up 30% cpu (gkrellm) tried reverting back some kernel options that I chnaged, no dice, anything I can do to debug this and see what it's trying to do?
<2> yoz: Hmm, somewhat
<5> siglite: no, I was trying really hard to ignore those unwanted mental images.
<2> Yikes, 100MB worth of packages to install OOo
<5> and, uh.... I was working, too. Yeah, that's it.
<6> PolarWolf: be glad MS doesn't release office for linux or it would be 1GB :)
<7> PolarWolf: yeah, and they're even more fun uncompressed :)
<2> siglite: Luckily I have a new 80GB harddrive in my laptop :)
<5> New0rder: gkrellm is a pig. it monitors your system so hard that it places a non-trivial load on the system.
<4> Ka-bar, it wasn't taking up much more then 1% if that, I changed something (I was getting frame buffer console to work), and before I noticed, it's just eating 30%

<4> Ka-bar, So I'm unsure what broke gkrellm, I have another session running monitoring another machine, doesn't seem to break.
<8> hello
<8> is enybody on
<8> ?
<9> nope
<10> never heard of this enybody
<11> downhill: his user list must be broken...
<8> can ypu help me with a root?
<8> you*
<3> a "root"?
<1> hahaha
<1> ROFL
<9> bybu: we don't help script kiddies compromising peoples computers, piss off.
<11> Oh this should be good.
<1> I like those ****ers.
<11> search google for "root" bybu come back in ten years...
<8> mda
<1> rotard
<11> a root canal? a root directory, a tree root, any plant root. that explains it your on "mda"
<12> ah, these kids today.
<13> D-side, what about them?
<11> D-side: you just missed a conversation. I would post the question asked but fear being k lined
<13> you sure you're not talking to me?
<5> vIkSiT: it doesn't know what it's talking to
<13> aah.
<11> Sorry guess I should learn to read and type better.
<12> wwbbs: i saw it.
<11> vIkSiT: ya I was talking to you... I think this Gaim client has nick completion. Been years since I've been on IRC. I'm testing Ubuntu as a replacement for 2k&xp on my desktops at work, 150 or so clients. I've been using debian on my servers since 97 and Ubuntu seems to play nicely with Debian.
<11> Hell I'm stuck on freaking MSN right now just so I can tell others it works.
<13> Um. Ok. Though I still don't know what you're talking about nick completion and all - but good luck!
<11> vlkSit: don't worry not important.
<14> heya Peter
<9> welcome back :-)
<7> man
<9> woman
<15> dude?
<7> the cisco entrenchment around here's really starting to piss me off
<15> Shadur!
<14> 'lo Rens
<16> Sean!
<14> Russell
<3> grah
<14> Fred :)
<3> it is FREEZING in here
<3> afternoon, Sean :)
<3> hey rhowe :)
<6> RelDrgn: stick some P4s in there with you and soon you'll be roasting instead :)
<3> the AC vent is directly overhead, blowing cold air onto my hands as I type.
<14> server room?
<17> hi there. Is there some way I can have about 3 linux computers, each with harddisks in them, and combine the 3 harddisks into one large harddisk which can be accessed from anywhere in my network? Sort of like RAID, but over multiple computers? Is that possible?
<14> across multiple computers is just asking for trouble.
<17> how else can I do this then?
<2> SeBsZ: Look for GFS
<17> I'm sure there is some software out there that can handle all the tasks to create such a system
<14> it's do-able, but I still argue it's insane to do
<17> how would you do it hen
<17> then*
<14> have 1 box with as much disk in it that I could.
<2> SeBsZ: *shrug* depends on how central you want your storage to be. Without some serious hardware (FC, iSCSI) it seems a pretty futile attempt unless you want to either NAS them all together under a single mountpoint

<2> SeBsZ: Or turn two of your computers into diskless thin clients
<5> or use GFS which should still be considered experimental, in my opinion.
<15> 4:20 for you potheads.
<14> it sounds like all he wants is NAS
<5> schitzo: what about for us drunks?
<17> PolarWolf, that sounds like it. Say I have 3 linux boxes. The first linux box (the "Server") will have a "shared folder" which can be accessed by my entire network. Inside this shared folder, are mounted also the 2 harddisks from the other two linux boxes. Does that make sense?
<18> anyone knows a channel where i can contact LUGs from NYC
<5> SeBsZ: no
<14> you can do that via NFS, but again I still argue it's insane
<5> antomio: no
<5> antomio: google
<17> Tamahome_, why is it insane? Can you clarify? I cannot have 1 box with many disks due to physical constraints
<18> kool Ka-bar i am taking a trip up north and need to make some contacts
<18> yea i know google-it
<2> SeBsZ: It does make sense, but whether or not it's workable is another thing
<18> just like rtfm
<14> sebsz: if one of those boxes goes down you'll have a nightmare trying to get it working again
<15> Ka-bar: you need a reason?
<17> but linux never goes down!
<18> but its easier talking to people one on one
<14> BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
<5> schitzo: no, just an excuse
<17> :P
<17> hehe
<15> Ka-bar: you need an excuse? Hmmmmm.
<14> it has NOTHING to do with the OS... a hard disk has moving parts, it *WILL* die at some point.
<17> why would I have a nightmare? No data is lost when one box goes down. The data that was on that box is still on that box
<15> Ka-bar: the fact that i'm still breathing is usually my excuse.
<17> on that harddisk*
<5> schitzo: good enough!
<2> SeBsZ: NFS is evil when connections drop
<14> also, it puts a real strain on your network, so you want to have a good switch.
<17> Tamahome_, well yes of COURSE, but that could happen even if it wasn't like this
<15> Ka-bar: I figure if I'm not breathing I really don't need an excuse to drink.
<5> er... yeah.
<14> and when I say "good switch" I don't mean the dinky Linksys you bought at the mall.
<16> PolarWolf: NFS seems to be OK for me - if you configure behaviour on timeout
<5> antomio: are you going to be in New York City?
<2> rhowe: Hmm, hmm, I never really bothered with NFS. It seems to never quite work properly for me.
<17> can someone give me a good distro that has NFS builtin, so I don't need to install additional software and play with dependencies
<16> SeBsZ: *
<5> antomio: try contacting these folks... http://www.nylug.org/
<17> rhowe, great :)
<3> NFS works just fine for me 99.9% of the time, but that last .1% Really Weird **** happens and it's impossible to diagnose
<16> SeBsZ: Or should that be
<2> Stacking network file systems onto eachother seems tempting, but I never really tried to implement it. I'd go for a global filesystem in shared storage myself
<16> !slackware?
<15> Ka-bar: hunt up a song called "Drinkin'" by "Reel Big Fish"
<2> rhowe: http://www.ae.nl/~autokardol/data/232327-A.JPG
<3> the problem with sharing out network filesystems is that you have two levels of cache, meaning that if you change a file on the main server, it may be minutes before the client gets those changes. Second is that you're doubling your network usage
<16> PolarWolf: -ENOGUI#
<2> rhowe: Tsk
<2> RelDrgn: One solution would be to not cache the second tier
<14> PW: the strain on the network would be enormous then.
<2> Or use a filesystem which deals with it because it's already based on caching, like Coda
<14> but yeah, the real problem is that NFS is so dumb about caching
<2> Tamahome_: Yeah, I wouldn't want it in my network either. Porblems are near impossible to diagnose.
<7> Tamahome_: man, share the wealth
<14> siggie: ;)
<7> Bela Fleck rules
<14> siggie: ever seen 'im live?
<7> dude, I couldn't get tickets to mountain stage two weeks ago. It sold out within six hours of the announcement.
<14> I've seen him twice at Jazzfest here in Ottawa
<16> PolarWolf: er.. it's a car
<14> last year with Jean-Luc Ponty, and the year before with Flecktones
<2> rhowe: Yeah, I know :)
<16> PolarWolf: ..kinda
<2> rhowe: I wannit
<7> he was here with the flecktones two weeks ago.
<16> PolarWolf: Surely you can afford it, now you have all those hundreds of euros from me for shanta? :P
<2> rhowe: Uh, wha?
<19> Yo! PolarWolf!
