<0> libolt: Sup man?
<0> Nanuq: Know what you mean. its kinda nice, actually.
<1> nada, was in Tucson yesterday though, setting up our new office down there
<2> syn-ack: yeah, but doing something would be handy
<2> syn-ack: easter is coming. means jack to me, except that some bloke name Jesus apparently died for my four day weekend.
<0> libolt: Wheres the office at?
<2> s/name/named/
<2> syn-ack: so I'll toast to him.
<0> Nanuq: Yeah, aint it great? :p
<2> syn-ack: I'd love to work on that day. Nice and quiet :)
<0> And you would get holiday pay too. Even nicer. :)
<1> syn-ack: heh I can't remember the address off hand, it's actually not directly in tucson, Orovalley but will cover tucson. It's off Magee and something I think. The building has a banner with "Century 21 Metro Alliance" on it until they get upt he proper sign
<0> ah, thats Oracle and Magee
<1> yeah that sounds right
<2> syn-ack: Oh well I still get paid.

<0> nice part of town, actually. Thinking that I might get a place up that way
<0> Nanuq: you know it. :)
<2> syn-ack: I'll be sure to remind these people what happened in Jesus' day when they didn't pay their taxes. Buahaha.
<1> Yeah it seems like a nice area. I'm even sure the last time I'd been down to Tucson.
<0> Nanuq: HAHAHAHA
<2> syn-ack: Actually no, I don't do collections. Did apply for that, did an interview, but they want people that can speak English and this other weird moon language that seems to be catching on here.
<0> libolt: Was up in Phoenix the other day. Off of 34th and Buckeye, where my drop yard is. :/
<0> Nanuq: You mean French? :p
<2> syn-ack: That's it!
<1> syn-ack: ah nice, thrown any turtles into the toxic waste you've been hauling to see what happens? :)
<0> I havent had any Haz Mat. :/
<0> Dont even know why I have the goddamn endorsement. :p
<1> ah that ****s
<0> Im thinking of checking into a company that hauls only Explosives
<3> Anyone here ever make an enlightenment epplet?
<0> E is for Evil
<3> I would hate to have to resort to asking rasterman a stupid question about a project he doesn't even care about anymore..
<3> Yes, evil, but in a good way.. ;)
<0> No one cares about E anymore
<3> What's the hot thing these days?
<0> Sure as hell not E
<3> Yeah? Like what?
<3> Huh? Huh?
<3> What?
<0> *Box
<3> *Box?
<3> Never heard of it.
<0> OpenBox BlackBox etc etc
<3> And you call E p***e?
<0> No.
<0> I call E a piece of ****.
<3> Can't get it to work huh? ;)
<0> No, I got it working just fine. Its just a pile of ****ty code
<3> Sure makes for a pretty desktop though..
<3> I'm talking about e16 not 17.. I have tried 17 yet..
<0> If you want pretty use Gnome or KDE
<3> /s/have/haven't
<3> Gah. Those are ugly cousins at best.
<3> Huge bloated ugly cousins.
<1> E17 looks kinda promising from the cvs version I tried a month or 2 back, performs pretty well but I doubt I'll be giving up kde
<0> What would I know though, Im currently using WindowsXP Pro.
<3> I hate the tendency by most software to try ultimatly to become an entire os unto itself.
<3> I like things to do their major claim to fame better than anything else, not to be everything to everyone.
<1> syn-ack: don't worry it'll BSOD and wipe your drive clean before too long :)
<0> When I use Linux or solaris I use Gome.
<3> E is quick and efficient. It's extremly pretty and functional. At least that's been my finding. And it's exactly what I want from a window manager.
<0> not when I used E16 it wasnt
<0> I thought for a lightweight WM it was bloated and slow
<1> syn-ack: it was just making sure you could keep up :)
<3> I'm using e16 right now and it's great.
<3> Compated to gnome or kde it's a cheeta to their sloths.
<0> libolt: **** you. :p
<3> /s/Compated/Compared
<3> libolt: Heh..
<0> wurzin: I wouldnt know, all my boxen have current technology so I dont mind running Gnome
<3> I'm running a 2.4G laptop. I'm not that far out of date.
<0> Oh and yes, I still use primarly Bash as well
<3> I guess it's a right brain kinda thing.
<3> I use bash primarily as well..

<4> E = quick and efficient?
<0> I will however use Zsh every now and then
<0> waznz: thats what I said
<3> Compared to Gnome or KDE? You betcha.
<1> I looked into getting Xgl running on this system the other day to see what kind of difference it made, but it appears it's going to be a pain to get it to compile unless you're using Xorg 7.0 since it relies on autotools for detecting stuff
<1> and since Debian hasn't migrated to 7.0 yet for sid
<0> libolt: Heh. autotools, a blessing and a curse. ;)
<3> I'm starting to dislike the gpl.
<3> It's not what I think of when I think of freely sharing stuff.
<0> Ive disliked the GPL for since '98 when I started using linux
<3> It's like nazi sharing.
<1> syn-ack: aye I actually use it for some of my own code, but I don't do anything too fancy yet. The PITA with Xgl is it's looking for pkg-config .pc files even though Xorg 6.9 is virtually Identical to 7.0
<3> Jew vil share!
<3> knock knock
<3> who's there?
<3> The sharing police. Share damn you!
<4> Although I imagine we _may_ be talking about other things ...
<0> libolt: Autotools is nice for me when Im trying to get a system up quick. then when something goes wrong and autotools wont tell you what the hell you need, since the ****ing coder ****ed and the only way you can get the info from the system is by looking at a backtrace.... thats when I hate autotools
<5> hey -- i have a default layout and configuration of terms that I setup on one of my virtual desktops in KDE...is there any way to save this, so it automatically returns after a reboot?
<1> syn-ack: Yeah been there done that
<0> libolt: oh and I hate autotools errors when trying to compile a kernel....
<3> I actually made a script the other day to find what libs had what symbols so I could find that out if I had unresolved symbols in a build.
<1> hrm need to find more things to try out with my 7600GT
<0> \Thats one of my peeves with the 2.6 kernel is that its so ****ing picky with symbols and ****
<0> Hell, I dont even compile 2.6 kernels anymore
<1> I do, but i let make-kpkg do most of the work :)
<3> I've been running 2.6 for 5 years.
<3> I've never had any trouble with it, and I'm running on a laptop..
<3> When I got the thing I must have compiled and recompiled about 50 times.
<0> libolt: yeah. For me most of the time the the distro kernel package works just fine
<3> The I promptly made a backup.
<3> /s/The/Then
<0> wurzin: Im not saying I cant do it. Im saying its just more of a bitch than a 2.4 kernel
<3> Anyone here try that supposed mac os-x tiger distribution that was supposed to be able to run on generic intel?
<1> syn-ack: this system requires a special driver to be patched into the kernel before building it for my raid controller. Plus the company system I have on linux all require special things like openswan and such so I'm real happy to have make-kpkg :)
<0> true that.
<0> which RAID controller do you have?
<3> I'm an old guy so.. Been there done that a buch of times.
<3> /s/buch/bunch
<1> highpoint rocketraid 1820a, now that linux has support for raid 1+0 arrays in software I'll probably do that next time, but moving nearly 400 gigs off it ain't that easy :)
<0> hah
<3> What's raid 1+0?
<0> I want to get a 3Ware RAID controller
<3> You mean raid level 1 and raid level 0?
<0> Wow
<1> yes combination of raid 1 and 0, two raid 1 arrays striped
<0> wurzin: Do us a favor
<0> libolt: RAID 10 is nice, but too much overhead for me
<3> I thought raid level 1 was striped.
<0> it is
<3> What's raid level 0?
<0> and 0 is parity
<3> Oh.
<1> no raid 0 is striped, raid 1 is the mirroring :)
<3> If I had a choice and money I'd opt for level 5 every time.
<3> Mirroring ****s.
<0> libolt: sue me for having it backwards. :p
<0> w00t
<3> I've seen level 5 save data a thousand times, but I've never seen mirroring save anything once.
<1> wurzin: depends on what you need. All the new debian sarge systems I build for the company have software raid 1 arrays
<3> And talk about overhead.
<3> I used to sysadmin for HP for all of the high level servers accross their entire wan.
<3> So I've seen a lot of arrays.
<3> And a lot of error conditions.
<3> Level 5 only requires one drive in the array for checksums. Mirroring requires another entire array.
<3> And when mirrored drives fail they tend to garble the data on the mirror as well.
<3> When a drive goes out on a level 5 array, you just change it out and rebuild with no one the wiser. Nice.
<3> All on a live system.
<0> You do that with any ****ing RAID
<3> You have to have it set to level 5.
<1> heh my experience with a mirrored array was that when the one drive died I just replaced it, rebuilt and voila system worked again
<3> Or you loose everything.
