<0> safemode: nah, that's why $DEITY gave us DVD--R <1> smsie: my first was a 120MB 2.5" one. expensive as hell <2> :o <3> TonyBlue: besides; most Linux distributions ship one by default. RTFM comes to mind. have a nice day, goodbye, don't bother coming back for a while. <4> If i didn't store movies on the computer out of convenience, i'd need nothing bigger than maybe a single 60GB drive, ...and that's only because I wouldn't want to have to keep monitoring my /usr/src dir <0> Jostein: the 40M was 5.25" MDM...cost about as much as the PC it was connected to... <2> :S <2> sorry <1> smsie: those made cute startup noises :P <0> yep <4> smsie: I have over 200 dvd's full. i know about them. <0> safemode: blank DVDs are a LOT cheaper than more HDs :)
<3> well, I hope that atax, better known as the whoracle, is right in his believes 8) <0> although, in fairness, drives are pretty damn cheap now <4> smsie: yea, but you dont want to juggle dvds' around all the time.. you burn what you dont really need anytime soon to dvd, and keep as much of the stuff you can see yourself wanting to use on hdd <0> safemode: indeed. That's not movies though (for me anyway) <0> that's like...UT <1> safemode: only thing I burn to DVDs are full seasons of TV-shows <0> which is worth the HD space it eats <1> safemode: seasons I have watched and dont need instant access to <4> when you got about 200DVD's and pretty much 500+ cd's (and that's after a huge culling) ... using removable media for anything other than backups (as opposed to off site storage) is inpractical <0> safemode: depends how well indexed they are <4> find me a game that doesn't **** and i'll see if it's worth the hdd space <0> UT2k4 <1> smsie: I made a indexer app specificly for that kind of stuff :P <0> great game <4> smsie: finding something that can index that many discs is hard...and expensive <4> fps games all **** <4> by default <1> safemode: *nod* I dont do FPSes anymore either <4> I got tired of them after Doom 2 <0> safemode: what? $EDITOR is not expensive <4> smsie: $editor doesn't tell me where in my sea of spindles the cd is <4> nor does it make it easy to get it out when i do know which one it is in <0> safemode: it could, it just doesn't... <4> so it doesn't out of spite <1> Im getting a new 300GB next week <0> the bug here is lack of self discipline (which I am as guilty of as anyone) <1> Im fed up at burning DVDs :P <5> By default they do, but there are some good ones... you can't tell me Half-life 2 ****ed. <6> smsie: I know that feeling. Only ONE of my many CDROMS actually has its own ls-lR file in the top dir. <4> I can tell you every ****ing FPS game outside of the mid 90's has been nothing but regurgitated crap <7> Hum. Looks like I have to reboot into Winduhs to see what (if anything) of the NTFS partitions on the two unused hard discs Winduhs is using. <0> after you burn it, ls -lR it to a file. name the file "SpindleX-DiskN". Then grep can find the thing for you <4> with nothing original or interesting added <7> Oh well. *detach* <0> safemode: well, yeah....so? <4> that's why they ****. by default <0> safemode: there *are* no truly new gaming concepts...haven't really been since about 1992 <1> safemode: *nod* <1> safemode: but I did enjoy Quake, though <0> the attraction is in the implementation <4> smsie: i'm not saying they have to be completely original, that would be asking too much of a gaming company. But it's absolutely nothing new with every fps game. they're all exactly the same <5> lol <4> tehy might as well use all the same keys to do the same actions <0> safemode: better graphics, smoother play...that's about all you *can* manage for a game. <1> Im not paying $500 to $1000 just to play the same game with better graphics :P <0> and that's not only true of FPS...it's true of virtualy every genre
<4> no, there is plenty of room for actual gameplay evolution <4> it just costs more <0> safemode: Doom3 has an actual plot...it's a **** plot, but it's there <4> because you have to pay someone who is smart to think of the stuff.. instead of just code in more complex graphics and random ambient bull**** and when it doesn't play at all on anyone's box, tell them their **** is too slow and they have to buy something with real power <5> Uh huh, so the HL and HL2 series are just regurgitated crap from... which game was it? <5> And there's another point to all of this: you're way over analyzing things. Does a game really have to bring something brand new and original to the table to be *fun*? <0> CeruleanD: wasn't it based on the quake engine? <0> CeruleanD: hell no. I *love* playing UT2k4. <5> What does the engine have to do with it? And besides, they made their own for the 2nd one, the Source engine <5> I love the UT series too, I also liked Serious Sam, but from a technical aspect, it's a POS. But it's a fun POS <0> the last truly original advance in FPS was multiplayer. That was in like 1992 <0> that doesn't mean that the games haven't improved <8> one 14" LCD TV repaired. <5> And what more can they do with a FPS? <0> well, maybe the ability to design levels as well (which was also around the same time) <0> nothing <0> which is my point <4> space shooter games always had a character to each that made them distinctly different from others. RTS games had a weak difference, but it significantly changed the gameplay from one game to the next ... FPS games are the only ones that have no differentiating qualities. You go around and shoot the other people. About the only real innovation that's been made in FPS land is team army type games that have strategic objectives. <5> So how does that make anything made since then crap? <4> not just space shooters, but any type of combat shooting game <0> safemode: space shooter games haven't really changed much since elite... <5> What about games that included enthralling storylines or distinct puzzles? <0> graphics are better, but that's about all <0> you fly around, you shoot things <4> I haven't seen a new space shooter since wing commander went out <5> You can reduce *any* game or genre to that. <4> that genre is pretty much dead <0> which is what I'm complaining about in safemode's argument <4> RTS hasn't had a newcomer since starcraft and WC... that genre is dead <5> Wing Commander/Tie Fighter, those were the last decent space games. <4> the only genre's that are still around are FPS and puzzle type games <9> Games and their reviews are all about graphics and effects <9> What happened to gameplay? <4> there is no gameplay <5> I disagree, the Age of Empires/Empire Earth/Rise of Nations games are a blast. <10> I just installed the latest alsa drivers and recompiled my kernel and installed it.... should it automatically detect my sound card? <9> I still enjoy the games on my old 8 bitter more than I ever did the graphical violence on the PC <4> it's all ****ing dribble. I can't remember the last time i played a game for more than 20 minutes without getting completely bored. Maybe Mario kart. <5> Or how about the Warlords: Battlecry series? Mixing RTS and experience-gaining. <9> jsaacmk: Unlike you may have heard, "linux" doesn't really detect hardware. Even though there have been projects and products which kinda fake it. <5> Homeworld 1 and 2? <0> things like runescape are probably the next generation <0> mmorpg with decent graphics and no real limitations <4> i didn't say all games were crap. just fps games <10> hmm... how can I explicitly tell it what it is? or should it just work or something? <0> safemode: and I'm reducing your argument to prove it's crap <9> jsaacmk: Basically, the "hardware detection" is all about providing as many driver modules as possible and have a script query /proc/pci to determine which to load <4> smsie: no you're making an excuse for why fps is crap <0> safemode: no. I'm demonstrating how you can say the same about any genre <4> you could say anything about anything.. but you'd be wrong. You can't say rts is crap.. because rts actually has some variety <5> So does fps <4> bull**** <9> jsaacmk: If you paid attention, somewhere in there was a hint to determine which driver modules you need to compile and load :P <5> RTS is the same throughout since ... probably before Warcraft 1.
