<0> it's either samn small linux or linux from scratch <1> should be able to get a p233MMX for < $20 <1> so a 486? toss it. <2> Nanuq: they can be used as firewalls <3> Nanuq you are in right position but im newbie it will be cool to learn on that machine <1> Jostein: mehh.. <2> donvlto: no it wouldnt <2> donvlto: learning about a new OS thaht requires some fiddling on the slowest hardware possible is not a "good idea" <3> well im wrong :) <3> smart idea :P <3> but <2> you are abusing your enter key again. also you are mistaking smileys for punctiation <0> x11 would be painfully slow on that even <2> XyZzY: can you even RUN X11 on 16mbs RAM? <3> whats the chances to get that hard disk put on this machine and install on that hard disk a small linux server with this pc than with grub ill be able to load and chose two oses <4> of course you can
<2> with patience :P <4> no, it's not really slow ... just sometimes a bit laggy <2> koollman: I refuse to use machines slower than the NIC itself *grin* <3> what about my idea? <4> the problem is to run anything using X11 :) <5> Jostein: what a liar you are. <5> Jostein: your choice of OS refuses. not you. <5> windowsboy. :D <2> HAHAHA <2> for the record... this laptop, even with Vista loaded is the snappiest **** Ive ever used <5> mmhmm <6> hmm... very annoying. cant' get vpn to even show up in my dd-wrt page <6> even after upgrading its firmware <2> D-side: Intel Core2Duo, 2GHz, 2GB Ram and a 1920x1200 panel with some decent Nvidia graaphics <5> Jostein: vista just doesn't impress me. <5> Jostein: oooh. nice display. <2> yup <3> vista in italian means look <5> Jostein: can it play 1080p HD? :) <6> i'll wait for a while before I upgrade to vista <6> my lappie can run it <2> D-side: I tested it with a 120fps 1080p clip earlier today. 70% CPU usage :D <2> D-side: probably not REAL fps, but that was the encoding anyway. prolly bunch of empty frames <5> yeah i understand. <5> hell, it does it though. <5> Jostein: thats the specs of my laptop, without that fantastic display though. :) <2> hehehe <5> the main difference of course being mine is way cooler. :D <2> Its a dell latitude D820 <2> D-side: how come ? <5> Jostein: its a macbook. :D <2> I was about to ask if it was a fag macbook :P <5> **** you. :D <2> anyway, I like this laptop <2> I like this laptop very much <5> you should. <5> it sounds great if you can put up with its OS limitations. i'm not even kiddin. <5> g <5> hardware wise i'm sure theres nothing at all wrong with it. <7> dude, 2006 was so last year. What? <2> D-side: Atm I'm kinda just trying out Vista. If it pisses me off too much, I'll just go with a wipe and install Windows XP on it <5> Jostein: i meant windows in general <5> Jostein: im sure vista has to be better than xp. <5> i even said that with a straight face! <2> D-side: well. its a work laptop. work is MS-work, and apart from a few lackings, I dont mind Windows as a desktop OS <7> vist is not giong to better than XP <2> D-side: it has a few OSX qualities actually. like the composited GUI <2> which IMO is very nice <7> because MS is going to be able to do what ever the **** they want on your system with or without your concent <7> legally <7> technically they can do that now <6> this ****s I can't have vpn on my router. <2> tybalt: even as a MS-whore I posted this on my site: https://jostein.kjonigsen.net/articles/124/MS_Vista_is_the_longest_suicide_note_ever_written.aspx <6> oh well. attempt to get pptp installed on my linux desktop <2> cappicard: why not L2TP/IPSec? <5> cappicard: dear god. <5> cappicard: why no vpn on the router again? <5> you can't figure it out or technical limitation? <6> it's limited to 8Mb of flash ram <5> ew dude.
<7> you can install a SD reader on it <7> using a floppy cable <7> http://uanr.com/sdfloppy/ <6> i could do that. but i'll just set up my linux desktop as a vpn server for my laptop <7> why not use a SMB mount? <5> cappicard: fine, but why the hell use pptp? <6> i'll figure out openvpn then <5> cappicard: thats a good choice too. <5> i'm using ipsec but mainly because its ridiculously easy for me to do it <8> hello everyone. <8> got a question. how can i list all of the directories within a particular directory? i tried ls -d, but it only gives '.' as the only directory <8> i am trying to write a make file, and want all the directories to be ***igned to a particular variable <4> find . -type d <9> koollman: That's recursive. <2> koollman: we dont do spoonfeeding in here <8> great. that seems to work <7> whats wrong with telling him the command <7> it was one command, not some system <4> Jostein: that is just a beginning ... he will need more <2> tybalt: it still is against channel policy <2> tybalt: if people are too inept to read man-pages, they really shouldn't be using linux <8> strange attitude...i guess if someone points in some direction and that saves some time, it shouldn't be wrong <2> immad: hinting and directiong people towards the answer is usually fine in here. telling them flat out on basic stuff usually not <7> I think it's just apathy <8> i am rather new. learning as i go and this is only the second makefile i am writing. still have to learn and read some stuff but when you have to finish a task, you try to find answers a bit quickly <7> There isn't a thing wrong with it, I was able to teach my self how to program because of people helping me out in the same way. <7> and now I get paid for my skills in programming <2> tybalt: if you doubt the philosophy of this policy, you should hang out here during lamer-hour <7> what's time? <2> god we get lots of retards wanting us to do their work for them, because they are too inept to do it themselves <7> what time, rather <8> this attitude reminds of lisp programmers :) its a powerful language, but u have to be more accomodating of beginners <2> lamer-hour is a variable constant :P <7> generally, what time does it aproximate <2> what I'm trying to say is that it's not a specific hours, just that every day seems to have its peak of lamers asking stupid **** <4> Jostein: imho, that was not a lame question ... and I know I can miss things in find's man page ... and the makefile is not finished, too <2> koollman: I never said he was a lamer, though <2> If I had been upset here, people would have been kicked :D <4> sure :) <5> Jostein: settle down there mr sensitive. <2> D-side: coming from you :P <5> :D <2> D-side: want me to whine about not having a GF instead? <2> because I'm sure I can fake some semi-decent whining <4> you could whine about not having a sun fire x4500 ... it's easier (except if you have one) <9> Jostein: Is there a way to list all fulltext indices in MSSQL 2k5? <2> ThomasM: should be. try SELECT * FROM sys.indexes <2> ThomasM: Im pretty sure it has its own type <7> Computers are useless, they can only give you answers. <9> I didn't copy the full text files, and now it's refusing to back up the database without 'em. :) <2> hehehe <2> ThomasM: I always transfer DBs with the wizards or a full backup <2> ThomasM: less messy <5> Jostein: man, on that topic, you wouldn't be faking. :D <4> tybalt: Pic***o ? <2> D-side: Only the whining would be fake. Im pretty much too lazy to care <7> koollman, I dont understand, what are you asking? <5> Jostein: mmmhmm. :) <4> tybalt: it's a quote of Pablo Pic***o, right ? <7> Im pretty sure he died way before computers were around. <7> I take that back <7> I don't know if it is or not. <4> tybalt: hum ... I just checked ... I was correct ... <4> well ... now I should sleep :) <2> I hope that makes him feel left out :P <8> thanks for the help. $(shell find . -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d) worked fine. <7> I felt proud of my self when I completed my first useful script <5> as you should have. <7> It searched through directories recursively or non-recursive, did a search and replace in all the files and preserved the origional last modified timestamp <7> it was perl though <7> not a shell script <9> Jostein: Couldn't actually get a list of them (at least, not a good one--they were reference values in sysobjects and sysindexes, rather than the index name), but if I tell it to back up, it gives me the name of an index it can't find, and then I can just use 'sp_fulltext_catalog' to drop it. I think the problem may actually be that this is SQL 2k5 express and no fulltext capabilities are installed. <2> ahhh
