<0> ;)
<1> what you coding currently?
<0> like "what did I want to do?"
<2> smsie: A crude attempt of a "tripwire-like" intrusion detection program. I can't get tripwire to run on sollie (the gnu one), I dislike the one I have now, hate samhain so...
<1> fairynuff
<2> smsie: and I think it has some very basic elements of programming I could use... From file reading / processing to saving to grabbing hash codes (and other stuff) from files to...
<1> sounds it
<2> smsie: oh, dunno if I did already but I still wanted to thank you for your advice some time ago not to ditch a regular editor like vi/emacs/$others..
<1> have to admit I don't recall the advice...but you're very welcome :)
<2> smsie: lol ;) Well, you basicly told me not to fully dive into IDE's, and now I can see why 8)
<1> they're useful;
<1> but not to the exclusion of knowing the way by hand
<3> bye all.
<4> Lion-O: IDEs are nice though
<2> smsie: yups. So now I'm stricly seperating. So one chapter in my tutorial is done on the commandline, the other in the ide. works very nice for me.
<2> Viking667: see ya!

<4> Lion-O: Once you know the basics, know how stuff works and actually has a clue, IDEs are a godsend
<4> Lion-O: my opinion anyway
<1> Jostein: indeed...an IDE isn't a replacement for knowing the basics though
<0> I sometimes wonder what intrusion detection is worth.. like snort. it doesn't take any action unless you turn it into intrusion avoidance tool or something.
<1> yoz: you can hook it into iptables for a dynamic firewall
<2> Jostein: oh, absolutely.. Don't get me wrong; nothing wrong with them, I've been using one for quite some time now. Its just that in the beginning its absolutely worth it to have the need to type "public static void main(String[] args) { }" a few times, eventually you'll learn from mind.
<4> Lion-O: indeed
<2> (yes, for the curious: I ****ed up that line a few times in the beginning ;-))).
<4> Lion-O: or public static void Main(params string args) //insert C# here} :P
<2> Jostein: hehehe :-)
<2> Jostein: no #include <stdio.h> ? :-)
<4> Lion-O: **** no
<2> damn, I hit my C limits 8)
<1> I admit to liking IDEs for the autocompletion and sanity checking. I still know how to do it by hand thoguh
<0> smsie: didn't know it's possible.. must admit!
<1> yoz: look into snort_inline
<2> Cynic: wow
<1> a successful evening
<5> smsie: wuss!
<5> smsie: i made us$300 one night, at the .25c NL tables on pokerroom.com ;)
<4> Lion-O: I remember typing that kind of crap back in the 90ties :P
<4> Lion-O: no more such nonsense. and by that Im reffering to the .h-extension :P
<0> smsie: ok 8)
<1> Cynic: lucky you
<5> luck!?
<2> well.. Tomorrow I'm going to fix my exhaust pipe with 'gun gum', followed by a nice long ride to get the pipe to heat up and the stuff to harden. It *should* be good weather to ride tomorrow.
<1> Cynic: I'll settle for my $10 in one night at the 0.50limit tables :)
<2> smsie: ooh, you've discovered the casino's now? ;)
<1> Lion-O: it's a cheap way to have fun
<1> one of these days, I guess I'll try poker at a real casino
<2> smsie: *nod*, especially with a nice result. Enough to have a nice burger with fries 8)
<1> s, and now I can see why 8)
<1> 09:03PM|<1> they're useful;
<1> grr
<1> bloody paste
<0> Lion-O: would you prefer tripwire compared with integrit?
<2> yoz: hmm. never worked with integrit so I wouldn't know.
<1> Cynic: you play a lot then?
<5> smsie: yeah, i usually manage 10+ hours a week... it doesn't pay as well as my day-job yet though ;) i play NL online, and $5-10 limit at the casino.. i've been doing much better at the latter lately
<0> Lion-O: oh I see..
<1> Cynic: $5-10 needs quite a bankroll to play
<2> yoz: well, just downloaded it.
<0> Lion-O: heh
<5> smsie: i sit down with about $300 or $400 at the table, and am prepared to rebuy another $200 if necessary... the idiots at the Auckland casino are a lot worse than the idiots on pokerroom.com. at that level/limit especially.
<5> smsie: this is nz$ btw, so probably not as much of a bankroll as you're thinking ;)
<4> Cynic: heh
<1> Cynic: in the online rooms, I generally hold my own at 0.25/0.50. Any higher and I tend to lose steadily.
<2> yoz: solely judging from what I've read in their docs and HOWTO I think I'd prefer tripwire.
<0> Lion-O: mkay ;) /me gets tripwire
<2> yoz: I mean, I already have programs to store "file data" but its the config/policy file encryption, database encryption, easy to use interactive database updating (select/deselect changes), etc. Tripwire can be harder to setup, but its much more extensive.
<2> IMO ofcourse.
<5> smsie: read any books? they really helped my play, particularly the Slanksy books... of course, I have to remember that not everyone is as obsessed with pro gambling as I am... ;P
<1> Cynic: no, I've not read books. I'm just playing for fun really. If I lose, I shrug and smile. If I win, I'm very happy
<5> smsie: that's the best way to play it, really...
<4> thats how I do
<0> Lion-O: yeah figured.. I'm about to get familiar by RTFM.
<1> Cynic: I *have* gotten steadily better though (judging by what I win/lose)

<4> But I dont win that often, as I play against more pro people than me :P
<5> i just can't help being ultra-competitive at any game I play, particularly card/maths games
<1> I'm at the stage where I take cash away from the silly raisers and the overly tight players
<5> hrm, time for addiction #12 -- cigarette break
<4> Cynic: #12?
<4> Cynic: I'd like to see that list
<0> "Parsing policy file: /etc/tripwire/tw.pol \ Generating the database... \ *** Processing Unix File System ***" There we go
<6> I simply do not understand. Installed postfix from source, compiled it, nothing special, and yet half the directories it was supposed to create during installation (i.e. /usr/local/sbin/postdrop and /usr/local/libexec/postfix) were not. Do I need to create these manually or something? I know, this is a question for #postfix, but I've never, ever seen anyone so much as speak in that channel, let alone answer questions, heh
<6> It's not really a question, I'm just grumbling.
<7> CeruleanD: it hasn't done something dumb and installed in a different $PREFIX?
<6> Not that I can see, a lot of files are just where they should be, I found the postfix startup script where it should be, /usr/sbin
<6> I'm going to re-install it and see what happens.
<6> Well, it asks me if I want to create /usr/local/libexec/postfix... which I did before, I accepted all of the defaults...
<7> CeruleanD: it's not doing a copy of the directory structure internally/ untaring or something like that. I recall (vaguely) some tools *not* creating empty directories.
<6> hmmmm
<6> It's "Updating" tons of stuff, including files in /usr/local/libexec/postfix, so hopefully all will go well this time...
<6> about to find out :)
<6> ooo, it's there this time...
<6> weird.
<6> I know for a fact that I did "make install", 'cause I forgot to do it the very first time and had to go back and do it again...
<7> sudo make install?
<6> Well, whatever, I'm sure I screwed something up somehow
<6> yeah
<7> that's one that always used to trip me up. Amazingly I learnt, without resorting to compiling everything as root.
<8> hmm. I seem to be out of dvd-r's
<6> ummm... is that bad? O:-)
<6> I keep running into issues when I compile and run programs as my own user account.
<8> it is when I want to watch a DVD. It's not the same to watch them on the computer
<6> Like no one else can use it
<9> waznz: compiling everything as root is such a stupid idea.
<6> lol, oh no, I meant compiling as root
<9> wlfshmn: surely you can reacquire tomorrow.
<0> I think I'm going to store tripwire's database on a remote machine other than local and fetch it with wget before doing the integrity check. after finishing it should just rm the database again.
<4> wlfshmn: its called TV out. most new PCs have that :P
<4> wlfshmn: and its the main reason I use windows *grin*
<9> Jostein: it's called ****ing noisy whiny machine next to TV
<8> Jostein: for some reason, I only get retarded-looking output. I suspect I need a less crappy cable
<7> whyzzyrd: part of the reason I dislike hiring MCSE people ... "just give it more privileges" .... uhuh
<4> whyzzyrd: mine is dead silent, and its a p4 with no special silencing
<9> waznz: Exactly.
<9> waznz: Must Call Someone Experienced.
<4> waznz: thats the MCSA. The MCSE has -decided- that it needs the privilegies :P
<4> wlfshmn: that ****s. I use standard s-vhs cable
<4> wlfshmn: works fine in both linux and windows. but windows rocks for video-output.
<7> At my last job I had a huge whinge about the fact the institutions pumped out people who could drive the gui, but had NFI about what was actually happening. So as soon as something happened that they didn't learn from the GUI or you pushed them onto a different platform/language ... hmmm ... watch them drown :)
<6> lol, reminds me of a co-worker, snobby stuckup bitch who thought here bachelors in comp sci made her the Queen of All Computing and Information Technology.
<6> We were working in a NOC at a datacenter where we monitored servers. One of the things we had was a seperate off-network system connected in through Earthlink via dialup, so that if we got an error that a website was down, we could test it to see if it was really, truly down from the outside world.
<7> What was really amusing was ... here's a routine. With one input, I was told that the output varied. (for the same input..) ... Yet when I finally tested, guess what!
<6> If it failed we'd create a ticket and send it to the appropriate support group (unix or windows)
<7> I got the same output out each time ...
<6> I sat there and watched her test several 10.x.x.x error messages on the Earthlink dialup and (gasp) they failed, so she created tickets and sent them up...
<4> waznz: just like any certification system there are morons and actualy clued people
<4> waznz: the people I work with have serious skills
<7> Jostein: agreed
<6> I then had to explain to her about the 10.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x internal addressing schemes.
<9> Jostein: then we should have a certified bearer of clue certificate.
<4> whyzzyrd: lol
<6> Yeah, I knew a guy who came off the street from pumping gas, read the MS study books, got his MCSE and such degrees, but actually *knew* the stuff he'd read, and had a natural curiousity that had him reading every RFC/FAQ/white paper he could get his paws on. But those are rare. :)
<10> hello
<10> how can i make fedora core 1 read ntfs?
<10> i read a tutorial on internet and it says in "file system" menu, but i don't know where it is, i'm a beginner in linux
<5> EminemOn: compile ntfs support into your kernel, and read up on 'mount'
<9> EminemOn: you also seem to have no ability to read. Check the faq in the channel topic.
<5> that too.
<4> CeruleanD: basicly anyone with a MCS(A/E) without a nerdy/computer background... I dont trust those
<4> CeruleanD: like people who never did computers before university, because it was the ticket to a well paying job
<4> CeruleanD: *gah*
<10> all i am asking is where is that "fike system menu"
<9> EminemOn: You haven't read the FAQ yet, have you?
<10> i have a red hat and i click on that icon and i don't see that menu
