<0> try ubuntu. <0> why do you want to switch from windows? <1> It's annoying, slow, keeps crashing, and I was so impressed with firefox and openoffice, that I want to try more open-source programs <0> okay. i was just curious. <1> why do you think ubuntu is better? <1> because it's fewer CDs? <2> IDFguy-away: I've just installed Ubuntu as a desktop OS I haven't booted back into windows in over a month. <0> i didnt say it was better. <0> i just said "try it" <2> I am however a debian user since 95 <1> D-side, ok. <1> ok, another question, does ubuntu have multiple users option? like each one has his own desktop and start menu like windows XP? <3> hahaha I installed debian yesterday, I don't even want to fix my mbr to boot windows <0> IDFguy-away: thats the nice thing. you can try all of them. <4> Besides which. Ubuntu is _based_ on Debian, but not the same as it. <4> IDFguy-away: I have that set up here.
<4> IDFguy-away: the setting's under the Administration menu. <0> i've got to split. bbl <1> and one last question. I have an 11GB NTFS drive. I want to keep a windows installation on it. can I install both windows and ubuntu on the same drive? <2> t95-deb: for my servers yes its the only thing other than the occasional bsd box or commercial unix if I have to buy it to get support from the vendor. That still a big issue. Lotus Notes is bad for that. I had to screw with about 6 different version(s) of Notes 6.5.3 and SuSE & Redhat Linux until I could match a certified version up. Argh talkabout frustrating, considering it just runs on debian with a little help from alien <5> IDFguy-away: yes <2> IDFguy-away: depends on what applications you need in Windows. Else you will be fine with 5-6GB for Linux. <4> IDFguy-away: there's a small problem with that. You have to resize the Windows install so it doesn't take the whole drive. You'll need at LEAST an extra 4Gb for Linux <4> and I'd suggest at least 5Gb for some headroom <3> cool I was a redhat user (8 years ago) but tried debian, and I don't want to go back to redhat <1> Viking667. and extra 4GB before or after the install? <4> before. i.e. 4GB to install onto, keep aside another 512MB for swap partition. <5> IDFguy-away: split the drive evenly, you'll have both operating systems. You won't have a lot of room for apps/data though. <3> wwbbs, I just messed my X yesterday (uninstalled it hahaha) and dselect does not recognise my debian dvds <1> siglite. I have a 100G HD. currently it's split into three drives: 10G (windows), 10G (docs) and 80G (movies, games and music). what would you advise to change? <4> t95-deb: I never never NEVER use dselect. Blech. <2> t95-deb: ***uming the dvd's are still mountable, vi /etc/apt/sources.list and look for typos. <4> t95-deb: I'd use synaptic, maybe aptitude. <4> aptitude works under console, good for when X has died <5> IDFguy-away: I'd resize the movies/games/music partition and carve out 10G for ubuntu. But that's me. <2> t95-deb: Viking667 is right aptitude is the ****. <4> don't forget the swap space. <4> wwbbs: err, what? <1> someone told me Linux works better with FAT32, should I change that? <4> Aptitude's not ****. <3> hahahahah so? <2> No It's Very Good! <4> IDFguy-away: a Fat32 partition can be written safely by Linux, but NTFS can't without using captiveFS <2> Much more refined and easier to use than dselect. <4> wwbbs: thank you. State that next time, huh? <3> wwbbs, Viking667: The only thing I know, dselect just ****s <1> Viking667. thanks <4> It does in a pinch, but I prefer aptitude. <3> heheh <1> ooh, before I forget, what IRC client are you guys using? does mIRC works with Linux? <2> Viking667: Bad Canadian Slang sorry Eh!... <4> err, no. Though it might work under wine. I'd use xchat if you're in X <2> IDFguy-away: check out Gaim you may want it for windows as well. <5> IDFguy-away: there are about ten billion irc clients for linux. go find one. <1> k. thanks. sorry for the trouble <4> I currently use a console client called irssi, and I found that though I could USE gaim for irc, I didn't like it as much as irssi or xchat <3> Im gonna try aptitude <4> bah. He disappears. <3> I'm using ircII heh, I had my custom made ircII, but I stored it on a zip disk, and sold the drive like 6 years ago... crap <4> m. <4> I did use epic4 for a while, paired it up with Light. Was pretty good for me, except for the insane scripting language. Now I'm on irssi, I don't mind it so much <2> t95-deb: that's all I used to use on my servers before the internet got all anal and such. I had a bbs going in the 90's that had access to the net. Lots of people learned to use IRC with the console. <3> cool, I can still remember BBS, that was some time ago :( <4> I can still remember SearchLight. Gotta be one of the best for glamour. <3> Viking667: gotta try that irssi <2> t95-deb: yup first on the block to go 9600. <3> wwbbs: hahah I remember when I got my first modem, I was dialing a bbs on canada (long distance) obviously, from friends house, not mine <3> in canda hehe typo <2> Wackos and Wierdos BBS, +1(705)6798383 (no longer in service) Porn & Warez 84 (Amiga 500) to 98 (486 DX2 66Mhz 2 500Mb SCSI Drives and 6 Disk CD Changer) <3> wwbbs: now I know what wwbbs stands for heheh <6> god, whats with japan and their 500km/h+ trains? heh <2> I used to dial one up in New York, at 38 cents a freaking minute 1500$ phone bills. <3> hahahahah
<3> nah, that's why I was ALWAYS shoing it to friends, and dial from their place <3> damn keboard <7> fridays always ****. <2> Ya the best system I used was Maximus BBS, stupid strange programming language called REXX. But that's what got me into everything else. I believe that REXX was ripped from OS/2 Warp as that was were the BBS was ported from. The Company never did manage to pump out a linux version. Does anyone remember Baron Realms Elite? <3> I had one bbs software (never used it anyway) hahaha Wildcat (something like that) BBS <2> Going have to break out the old Telex and Acid draw... hehehe... <3> hehehe <3> brb... <8> wwbbs: I'm sure they did have a Leenooks version <8> wwbbs: Maximum CBCS was insanely popular here. It was/is free, and was designed by a bloke somewhere in Ontario. <8> Plus, Rexx is neither strange nor stupid. <4> ... just weird to get used to. Especially ARexx <9> what's the url for the channel funny stats <9> I lost it <2> Nanuq: I loved it... <9> ? <2> Nanuq: Rexx was sure strange to me at the time. My BBS was so very customized I hadn't been able to build anything like it before using other tools. <8> wwbbs: my favourite was C-Net for the Amiga <2> Believe it or not actually paid the registration fee's for my bulletin board. And most of the games.... <2> Nanuq: Did the make anything else haha... <2> Wish the interface to my Norstar's and Cisco's were as easy as they were to configure.. <2> Maximum and Rexx that is..... <10> ha ha ha <10> Maximus was a bloated bbs.. Rexx.. hmmm, too little too late? <11> Lion-O: happen to know the irc-protocol RAW command for /NOTIFY +- ? <4> maximus.... never saw much of that one. Never had many Amiga BBSs down here. <10> hmmm.... Maximus was programmed using rexx? hmmm, I'm inclined to question that <10> quite heavily :P <10> Jostein: no <11> Lion-O: I will have to google that tomorrow then <11> gah <10> Jostein: like I said; I'm utilizing an IRC api for now so the common things are taken care of me for me. <7> hey Jostein <7> Lion-O, Viking667 <11> hey Cynic <8> Viking667: Maximus wasn't Amiga <8> Viking667: DOS and OS/2 <10> Jostein: so I only have to override certain events <11> OS/2 & Amiga had Rexx :P <11> Lion-O: ah <11> Lion-O: Well. I like making tusff, so ... I wanted to write the whole thing from scratch <8> Lion-O: I'm thinking, btw, that the OS/2 version was, but the DOS version wasn't. <8> Lion-O: as it wasn't available on that platform. duh. <10> Jostein: aye.. My java-fu isn't big enough for that, I do plan to eventually outgrow the bot thingie and goto server usage. <12> only time I've ever used OS/2 it was a SWIFT thingie <12> the computer was used about once a month or something like that <12> you swept a card, it connected to a DB, authenticated and updated codes <12> then you waited untill the next time you swept the card <12> all the machine ever did <11> heh <12> heya Jostein <12> what are you doing up? <11> hey <11> K_F: just sort-of finished that framework I was talking about <12> hehe <12> job tomorrow? <11> K_F: now rewritten to be more sane and even more clean :P <11> yeah <12> get to bed <11> so.. I seriously intented to do so now <11> until you said <11> "hey" :P <11> so... Im off! <12> g'night <9> Lion-O <13> "So, tell the winner what he's won, Karen!" <13> My. Quiet day today. All the stupid people away trying to breed? <14> Unfortunately the laws of Thermohumancoupling Dynamics state that the stupid ones are more successful at breeding than others. <13> CeruleanD: Not after we X-Ray their genitals ... <14> Har, we can only hope that that procedure becomes more popular. <12> CeruleanD: I thought that was the law of hot sluts not using protection?
