<0> haha <1> Hello Everybody. I have a problem setiing up a X. I have runned Xorg -configure <1> <1> The problem is that when X start It start at a very hight resolution. <2> Then lower it. <1> when the user slogins the resolution is the switch to a lower one. <2> Then lower it. <1> I have specified in xorg.conf the folowing: DefaultDepth 24 Modes "1024x768" bit the X still start at 1600x1200 <1> I dont know were to specify the starting resolution for X. <1> I have a gentoo and the X was started using /etc/init.d/xdm start <0> ok, time for southpark, brb <2> its in the Gentoo Docs. <1> If I put the X not to start auto and a login with a user and then run "startx" the X starts at the correct resolution. <1> I have look over and over the docs <1> those dosc helpe dme to install X in the first time. <2> you need to change your default resolution settings and its right there in the x config file
<2> safemode! <1> like I said I have specifed the DefaultDepth 2, Modes "1024x768" in the SubSection "Display"but does not work. <1> I know that I am aworking in the correct xorg.conf file because I also have there some touch screen configuration that also works. <2> There should only be one xorg.conf file <1> correct ... <3> huh - defaultdepth should be 16 or 24 unless you have a monochrome screen. <1> but I did everything that is specified in this doc http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml#doc_chap3 <1> but nothing. <3> and if your screen can't handle 1024x768, then try 800x600 <3> davidf: so. Do you have a colour screen? <1> the screen can handle 1024 x 768 because if I login foirst with the user and then startX the the resolution is correct. <1> when the system start... X it is started by XDM. <3> cool. Now, going back to your xorg.conf, where is it? /etc/X11 ? <1> first it starts with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 and then when it does the autologin it changes the resolution to 1024 x 768 (the resolution for the user). <3> xdm works with what values are in the xorg.conf file. So, is your xorg.conf in /etc/X11 ? <1> ./etc/X11/xorg.conf <3> Thank you. Can you paste that to a pastebin? <3> try this one: http://paste.getlinuxhelp.org/ <1> here it is. <1> http://rafb.net/paste/results/DSm6Wo72.html <1> this is my xorg.conf <3> ahhh good. <1> I am trying to do this because it affects the touchscreen functions. <1> the screen get calibrated at 1600 x 1200 and the when it does the autologin and the resolution descreasess the touch calibration is a mess. <3> I'll take a look... I'm just waiting for it to come through. <1> thank you. <3> by the way, I didn't get all of it. It's been truncated <1> this is the hole config. <1> http://rafb.net/paste/results/DSm6Wo72.html <3> Then you're missing some. I only have 80 lines. <1> it misses a EndSection. <1> I did not paste it right. <3> .. and? <1> in the files has a final EndSection line. <1> that's all. <3> type this, and reply with the result: wc -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf <3> It should be a number <1> this is the file generated by Xorg -configure and reconfigured by me. <1> 80 <3> weird. There aren't enough lines. <1> X start without any problem. but it start with a bad resolution. <3> And yes, you're certainly missing a EndSection line. <3> I'm also surprised you don't have any SubSections for other colour depths. <3> yes. Wish I knew why. <3> Can you stick your current /var/log/Xorg.0.log up somewhere too? <1> yes sure I can <3> davidf: thank you. <4> hi. i installed fedora on the same hdd as xp (fat32) is installed.. and i chose the grub bootloader.. but now when i reboot the pc i get a grub> prompt and it doesn't lemme boot fedora.. what shall i do? <3> yeah. You can't get Linux to boot off a fat32 drive reliably. <3> If it's in its own partition instead, that's better. What partitions did you have on the drive? <1> Viking667 here it is : http://rafb.net/paste/results/6rmiSJ30.html <1> this is my Xorg.0.log <4> Viking667, the hda1 (fat32) and 9GB free .. so i partitioned fedora on the free space..and installed it <3> asdee: ah huh. <3> asdee: type this into grub> root (hd0,1) <4> Viking667, well? <5> hi ! <3> grub> kernel /boot/<Tabkey< <5> who installed Xgl ? <3> asdee: as in, type kernel /boot/ then hit the tab key, and see what kernels are listed. They should probably look like vmlinuz-stuff.
<4> Viking667, when i type root (hd0, 1) i get: Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS <4> Viking667, if i type root alone i get (hd0,1): file system type unknown partition type 0x83 <4> Viking667, what shall i do? <3> wow. Strange. <5> 0x83: Linux Native ? <4> ext3 i believe <5> yes <3> I'm surprised as anything that grub doesn't recognise it. <3> oh. Sorry, davidf. I'll be right withyou. <6> Aaaaand it's the .eu landrush time. <3> davidf: your Xorg is deciding it wants to run in 16-bit mode for some reason. <3> ... which means it's defaulting to the highest resolution it knows how to run. <4> man Viking667, help me out im stuck right there <3> Add a SubSection that is like the one you currently have for 24, only make it 16 instead. <3> asdee: I'm not sure how to, to be honest. <5> who use Xgl ? <7> hi guys <7> anybody have tried beowulf clusterring? <7> i have made it work without error now the problem is i dont know if the computer i clusttered really helps the other computer <7> any ideas? <3> I wanted to. Never got the go ahead from the other half, however. I also didn't have enough 100MBit cards at the time (none, in fact). <3> kernel20: well, if you're only using two computers, then you probably won't notice a difference. <3> It's better with 8 or better <7> my probs is is there a log file i can see if the slave nodes help the head node? <3> I don't know, sorry. I would google for that, or read the docs with your clustering software. <7> yeah thats what i've been doing but can't get any clues <7> thanks Viking667 <7> anybody else? <8> ooh! <8> google talk...with PICTURES <7> have tried beowulf clusttering? <8> me? <8> i do it every day <7> Viking667: question <7> have u tried beowulf clustering? the howto i have read used lam <3> I've tried Morphix with two machines. I didn't really notice much difference. <7> Morphix? <7> ahh morphix an OS <3> mmmm. Based on the same concept - get processes spread across multiple nodes. <3> Runs on top of Linux. <8> what are you doing that you need multiple computers for? <3> I suspect he's "playing" <7> i want to apply it to our servers <7> i want slave node to help <7> the problem is how can i know that the slave nodes helps the process <3> mmmm. <7> the head node has web, email and msql <7> my problem now is testing <2> docphu! <8> SUPERTRUCKER! <2> How goes it dude? <1> Viking667 I tryed to add a seccond subsection to my xorf.conf and I specified the Depth 16 <8> same as always, you? <1> and the Modes "800x600" "1024x768" <1> and restarted the XDM <1> but still X start with the higher resolution for some reson. <2> docphu: Im tired as **** and Ive been roughly 200k miles tour <2> all in 8 weeks, baybee <8> supertrucker er, you'll forgive me if i don't recognize your nick :) <2> <- syn-ack <8> ahhh <2> :D <8> 200k mlies? <8> what are you doing? <2> docphu: You didnt know that I drive Simis now? <8> nope <8> i thought you were a regular linux user like all the other freaks in here :) <8> you know i'm teaching in japan right? <2> no, I didnt. <8> =) <8> got a "get drunk" date with some nice ***** next week too <2> brb, need a nother sammich. :)
