<0> that'll make smp-encode just about the fastest way to encode a cd or selection of files and all in my nice hand coded GTK+ ontop of c++ UI :) no better way to learn all the fun parts of UI coding.
<1> hehe
<2> safemode: nice
<2> so... what year is 2.0 coming out? :P
<1> hmm, you have a different roadmap on the website than you said here
<0> had to rewrite just about all of it just today because i wanted it setup to be easily optimized after i get the features completely working. Reusing gtkwidgets so i dont have to have a bunch declared in any given function.
<3> ye gods, what a ****ed up product vmware server actually is.
<1> Lion-O: oh?
<0> Jostein: actually getting the options screen working was the hardest part. Figuring out how to setup the interface for the encoder objects and the gtk+ ui options screen so that they were kept in sync and moving between options screens wouldn't erase old selected values
<3> K_F: their free version... This evening I come to the conclusion that it ****s donkey ****
<1> what did it do, and is it related to the deletion of an image file?
<2> safemode: thats the sort of stuff I dont need to think about when Im coding
<2> safemode: and Im glad I dont have to think about that
<0> Jostein: I eventually rewrote it multiple times and ended up using a std::map interface and a nifty little object that is basically a struct with a value and two bools
<3> K_F: no, its just extremely sluggish. According to Revenger its due to debug code, but when doing some very common things it just partly died on me. Add this up to the retarted way they install their software (= start with uninstalling currently installed products) and I think that vmware simply ****s donkey piss on Linux.

<0> Jostein: add that on top of the fact that he UI is threaded and taking input from multiple threads at the same time and you have the recipe for fun. But yea, the hardest part is all over. The only thing that may take even close to the same amount of time is the metadata. Ripping is gonna be easy
<3> jgaddis: I'm quite sure it behaves on Windows.
<4> Lion-O: I use VMware Workstation on Linux as well without any issues.
<0> Jostein: so i'd say a couple months given that i have maybe 1 day or two every two weeks to work on it. 2.0 should be ready around then
<3> jgaddis: I did too, untill I wanted to go beyond 2.6.10.
<2> safemode: heh
<1> I tried to replace VMWare workstation with VMWare player as I have an image file I use anyways, that didn't go too well
<2> safemode: Until I get a SMP system, I'm happy with my win32 all-in-one package
<0> Jostein: you can opt to use 1 thread with smp-encode, but that defeats the purpose a bit
<0> heh
<3> jgaddis: then their server came up (free) which supported later kernels. But due to the sluggishness I decided to install vmware player. That resulted int he installer uninstalling vmware server. IMO the whole concept is ****ed up.
<5> heh. wifi just connected to my sister's wifi router
<2> safemode: yup. that sorta defeats the purpose royaly :P
<3> I once spend a few bucks on their workstation for Linux, but can't go beyond 2.6.10. Now I'm determined never to pay up for their software any more.
<0> Jostein: it is fun to see ~80 min worth of audio get encoded in about 2 minutes flat
<2> safemode: true. but I have now encodded all my CDs anyway
<0> Jostein: oggenc is quite fast in 64bit mode when run in parallel. lame however, falls on it's ****ing ***.
<2> safemode: so.. if it takes 2 or 20 minutes, I dont really care
<2> good results though
<2> I know lame. I trust lame. Ogg... I havent bothered with ogg to be honest
<0> vorbis works better.
<3> same here. it does nice things, makes my music smaller (when compared to mp3) but heck... Most of my music supports mp3.
<3> I don't care about smaller files, I want good sound. mp3 offers me good sound, why would I switch?
<2> someone here understands
<0> stick to wav, everything uses wav and it's lossless
<3> safemode: most of my mp3 players don't grok wav :P
<3> my cdplayer does. but it also groks mp3 8)
<0> my music players can do both
<0> the majority of my music is played on the computer however, and in that case, there is no reason to use mp3
<2> which doesnt grok ogg
<0> and in any case, the argument of whether or not mp3 is better than vorbis is moot, vorbis is a better technical codec. whether or not that matters to you is another matter. I was just mentioning that lame still can't perform for **** in 64bit despite the arch being in active use for a decent amount of time. Which tells me that lame isn't being actively developed anymore.
<2> safemode: just pointing out that regardless, I prefer lame :P
<0> i know some people do, which is why i put it in my program, in fact, it makes up the majority of the GTK code in the program because of all the options it requires
<3> just because they don't adapt x64?
<3> thats just narrow minded. I know a lot of network based programs which still don't support ipv6 while it has been around... I thnk even longer than i64.
<2> heh
<3> x/i64/x64/
<6> yo Lion-O, Jostein et al
<7> "the module load perfectly in the running kernel"............... kernel panick
<6> today is a very bad day.
<2> Cynic: oh?
<3> Cynic: oh dear
<6> i'm doing helpdesk duties :/ drives me friggin batty
<2> ouchie
<3> ****s
<6> yep.
<2> unless you account for family :(
<3> wow... it took 10 minutes but it shuts down
<7> Lion-O: add VMWare Player to the list of PITA
<3> K_F-: naah, this is the server variant.
<7> <7> "the module load perfectly in the running kernel"............... kernel panick
<3> aaah ok

<3> K_F-: hmm.. iirc it worked for me.
<3> (don't ask me to define 'worked', I don't recall) :)
<0> Lion-O: it tells me it's not being actively developed. What makes it not actively developed is the fact that it hasn't had a release in over a year. lame is as actively developed as my last c++ ***ignment from college
<3> safemode: why would there be a new release when it does all it said to do ?
<7> wtf, just crashed again
<7> seem to be conflicting with ipw2100
<2> Lion-O: they could always add a flashy, shiny new GUI :P
<3> if it has a lot of bugs on its todo and such then yes, I'd agree. But... ah, ok.
<2> Lion-O: and require a DX9 gpu, not to mention 1GB of ram
<3> Jostein: aah, could. right. but its cli.
<2> Lion-O: sarcasm impaired, are we? :P
<3> Jostein: nah. influenced by b33r
<2> Lion-O: I only had 3 and now Im out :P
<0> lame is supposed to be multi-platform/multi-arch. It's missing an increasingly growing set of arch support in the form of x86-64. Since that hasn't been fixed, i'd say it's not actively developed, since that would be one of the pressing things to get working on.
<8> christ almight
<8> y
<2> lame is supposed to make mp3s :P
<8> got a buddy here, came down, UNINVITEd, and wont ****in leave
<7> hehe
<9> hehe
<7> is that clock of your's correct?
<8> hes installing an audio card in his lappy(pcmcia), and wants me to watch, cause he thinks I dont know hwo to do it
<3> so what are you doing behind the pc?
<8> i taguth the idiot what he knows
<8> which wasnt how to spell, obviously
<9> or punctuate.
<2> heh
<8> that too
<9> but whatever. :)
<9> Jostein, actually, I make it a point to either capitalize, or write the entire sentence in small letters.
<9> small is faster!
<2> vIkSiT: I was thinking about your nick :P
<9> Jostein, hahahaha
<7> you guys have seen http://preview.local.live.com/ right?
<9> in IE? no.
<8> i can type just as fast in LOWER CASE and I can in upper case and a Mixture of BoTh
<8> i swapped those around...whoops
<9> hehehe
<10> I have a question.
<9> fast != accurate ')
<9> s/'/;
<8> XYZZZ, well god for you.
<9> XYZZZ, how about the whole man on the moon thing?
<8> XYZZZ, change your nick, as you are interfering with nickcomplete for another #linux user who is a regular.
<9> you think its real?
<2> vIkSiT: the -one- capitalization thing that pisses me off the most Is This One That's Evidently Used In Any Cd or Print These Days
<10> People are always speaking of spyware and viruses on Windows, but does Linux or Unix do anyting to prevent these? If not and the m***es started using Linux and Unix would it be possible for them to be exploited, just like Windows?
<3> XYZZZ: impossible.
<8> that is not a question that we would like to answer.
<8> heh
<9> XYZZZ, uh, there aren't (m)any viruses/spyware for linux anyway
<3> XYZZZ: if you think about it hard enough you'd see for yourself.
<2> vIkSiT: good luck hijacking port 25 while you're not root
<10> I know it's impossible, but I was thinking of the big IF
<9> Jostein, hehe exactly
<3> you know its impossible? it isn't.
<9> DAMN it. Freakin interpolation is driving me crazy.
<8> alo Kristian Fisherman Beach
<8> or whatever it was
<10> I was just wondering if Linux or Unix has any fail safe stuff built into the kernel to prevent this.
<1> You are quite close
<3> XYZZZ: you're obviously clueless.
<11> or a troll
<8> XYZZZ, yes, it does...its called THE KERNEL
<3> indeed
<1> removing vmware-player stopped the kernel panics, good, good
<2> XYZZZ: whee I come from these kinds of questions are called trolling
<1> time to install workstation again
<10> Right, and every OS has a kernel, so what makes Unix and Linux better in this area? And, I have been running Unix for four years and Linux for six, starting with mandrake and FreeBSD.
<11> totally clueless statement
