<0> I halped a romulan!
<0> s/halped/helped
<1> how do you hide the titlebar using an X resource
<2> http://eclectictechcarnival.org/webcam/
<2> chicks only (or mostly)
<1> r u there
<3> catapro: Speak English.
<1> I wanted to say I haven't seen so many ugly ones for some time, those can't be romanian
<1> uh... Romanian
<2> catapro: no, most aren't
<1> besides, a Romanian chick knows to keep a distance from tech, if you know what I mean
<1> they won't be meeting in Pula to get hand on experience on technology
<2> catapro: they don't need tech, they have men for that
<4> Hmm i recently updated the slackware kernel to 2.6.17.11 but when i try too boot that kernel i get, some errors....
<1> kill: not necessarily; mainly kids

<4> http://pastebin.ca/161378
<4> Anyone have a look why i get that?
<1> my guess is that you did not include support for the type of filesystem your root is
<5> Unax: sure: lackware.
<4> no i have support for reiserfs
<5> Unax: as a module most likely.
<4> i think it maybe my SATA controller..
<4> Lion, no it's built in i checked and double checked.
<4> it's the controller is what someone else suggested
<5> In short: you can't modulize support for your hardware which is used to read the root filesystem.
<4> but i dontknow wich driver to load for the controller..
<5> /think/
<4> 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controllers cc=IDE (rev 01)
<4> is the sata controller i have but i do not know wich Driver so i dont know wich one to choose in make menuconfig
<5> Unax: you don't know? Errr... Really, you should know your hardware *before* messing with the kernel.
<4> Lion-O, new laptop :P, didn';t want windows on it so i formatted right away, installed slackware :)
<5> poor choice indeed.
<4> Well, Windows = ****s and i dont like it anyway it's bunch of bloated crap..
<4> and i prefer *nix...
<1> Unax so try to include that SATA driver or someking of generic one in the kernel ; not sure what sata are suported
<1> *somekind
<4> catapro. but i mean it's obviously supported the kernel booted after i installed it from the cd.....
<4> let me check lsmod
<1> you have a SATA cd-rom?
<5> Windows = ****s? With that kind of attitude I don't think you'll fare well.
<4> this is my lsmod.. output http://pastebin.ca/161383
<5> Personally I think lackware is even worse.
<4> catapro not a sata CDROM sata HardDrive.
<5> Anyway, first of all: the normal procedure to update the kernel is using your package manager. Why even mess with a kernel if you know so little about it?
<1> yeah.
<4> Lion-O, something called learning...
<4> you really cant learn something withtout trying
<4> you have to try a few times before getting it right :)
<5> Unax: that is not an issue of distribution.
<5> and lackware doesn't give you a good learning curve as it totally ignores how any other sane distribution works.
<6> i downloaded linux mandrake, the download was clean and in just one attempt without resuming...but md5 checksum doesnt match with the one given on the site
<6> whats wrong
<5> ifrah: could be anything, probably something with the download or on the mirror or you checked the wrong md5 checksums or....
<4> Lion-O, everyone has there preferences you have you'res and i have mine... so why are we going to argue over flavours...
<6> the download was perfect and without the need to resume continuous
<5> Unax: because in this case the product itself is very likely to be the cause of your problems.
<6> the file is 711 mb long...can i burn it on a 700 mb cd
<4> so wich distro do you suggest?
<5> Unax: anything else besides lackware or anything lackware based. One which appeals to you.
<4> Hmm alright
<6> http://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/iso/2006.0/i586/
<5> Unax: you're right about learning, no comment there. But its a lot nicer to have a choice. For example; would you have the option to use a package manager to upgrade your kernel you'd get a perfect example of how others would have done this. That might be a nice lead to take on the procedure on your own without a package manager. A good example sometimes is a lot easier to follow. just my 2 cents though ofcourse.
<6> I love mandriva linux
<6> very easy to use
<1> they went commercial, dont they, mandriva I mean
<1> *didn't
<4> okay
<4> yea i think im going to try Some other Linux Distro next, probably Gentoo
<4> it seems pretty nice
<1> Gentoo? isn't that compile-based
<4> compiling = fun more hands on in my Opinion...
<7> Unax: Gentoo is for people who have Time To Waste in deluding themselves that they have a full-on riced up Linux distribution, when in fact all that's happening is that they're ignoring how much time is needed to compile the packages, how much extra CPU time it's costing to do that, and how much extra electricity their machines are consuming because of that.
<1> Unax :)
<7> I have an irssi alias called /ricers especially for Gentoo users. :)

<4> lol
<4> you guys have a excuse for everything eh?
<4> ok then wise guys recommend a good distro i'm all out of ideas.
<7> Unax: Debian is my recommendation
<1> Unax I'd go FC5 or Debian, these are what I personally like, in reverse order
<7> If not Debian, Ubuntu is also a good start.
<4> or maybe go back to FreeBSD :)
<4> i know that system inside out :)
<4> *O/S
<7> I tried using FreeBSD earlier this year, to remind myself of the good old days when I used to be a BSD admin.
<7> Brought back old memories it did.
<4> i love FreeBSD always have :)
<4> thats one distro i cant give up :), linux was a new choice for me going to try out a bunch of distros on the laptop see wich one i like best..
<4> soo far slackware is really no good :P
<7> I stopped using FreeBSD after a month though and I'm still using Debian. And no matter what other distro I shove onto my AMD Turion64 laptops' spare partition, Debian is the one which Works For Me and my hardware. I watsed several hours a few days ago trying to install SuSe 10.1 64 bit, but its Xorg configuration freezes said laptop.
<1> I am eagerly waitin for etch to come out
<4> hehe
<4> these days everyone is making a Distro to suit there specific needs...
<7> I'm in two minds whether or not I want to fix the SuSe installation. I can't be arsed and, well, Debian is working and even though it's Sid, it's working well.
<4> well those who know asm c/c++ etc.
<2> i still have no luck with the ACPI on my laptop :(
<1> are you at
<1> 64 bytes from 192.168.5.23: icmp_seq=2 ttl=126 time=112 ms
<4> Wow how does one get such a latency from the Same lan
<4> it should be around like 5 MS max..
<2> i like the mandrake i have now installed, the 64/32 bit integration is smooth
<7> killall-9: I /hate/ the ATI Mobility Xpress 200M graphics on my laptop. I hate it with a vengeance.
<2> s/mandrake/mandriva/
<2> Tron: same card, no problem
<7> Actually, the 200M is OK, it's the ****ing drivers I can't get to work.
<2> even opengl works
<2> even through wine :-)
<2> just the fscking acpi tables are a mess
<4> lol
<2> oh, and i never tried the fingerprint scanner
<2> who needs that **** anyway
<7> killall-9: I got it to work /once/ on a previous installtion of SuSe 10.0 64bit. I can't get it to work properly at all with Debian Sid 64bit. I can get the module to load, and Xorg to start. THe X cursor appears but instead of the checkered X root window I get multi-coloured mush in the root window, as if the GPU is looking at the wrong pages of video ram.
<7> killall-9: Xorg.0.log indicates that DRI has been successfully started too.
<7> killall-9: Leading to a very frustrated Tronny.
<1> Tron for 64 bit I vouch for FC5 for now, it's running AMD64 without problems
<7> killall-9: If I go into gdm proper with that configuration, the gdm window appears as normal. I can log in, but as soon as I try to move windows etc. the whole laptop freezes up. leading me to believe the ATI driver really IS reading and writing into the wrong memory pages.
<7> killall-9: The giveaway the the multicolored mush if I just run Xorg from a console.
<2> Driver "fglrx"
<7> s/the the/ is the/
<7> killall-9: Yes I'm running the fglrx driver. I just can't run it with "Load "dri"".
<2> all the extensions are enabled and work for me
<4> i really cant think anymore wich distro to install :(
<4> I'm BORED!
<7> killall-9: You have a different lappy from me though. I have an HP Pavillion dv8000.
<2> 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE)
<4> i have a gay DELL XPS M1710
<2> \hp nx6125
<8> I have a problem when i try to ./configure vypress chat it gives the error of QT something what i do?
<7> killall-9: fglrx says it finds the 200M but it's a "third party card".
<7> killall-9: I might even try downgrading the BIOS, as subsequent to fglrc working I upgraded to the latest BIOS from HP, which seemed to solve all my ACPI problems. Actually that might be what's causing the problem.
<2> (--) PCI:*(1:5:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x5955) rev 0, Mem @ 0xc0000000/27, 0xc8400000/16, I/O @ 0x2000/8
<4> Hey Tron is there a way i can check whos my Motherboard Manufacture of my laptop so i can get rid of this gay Dell BIOS. and install the manufacturer Bios.
<2> (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.23.7
<2> (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: LGDr8.23g1
<2> (--) Chipset RADEON XPRESS 200M (RS480 5955) found
<7> killall-9: Oh you're on 8.23.7
<7> killall-9: Not tried the updated drivers?
<2> it's working - why fix it?
<7> Actually I think it was 8.23.7 which worked for me too. Hmmm.
<7> killall-9: WHat version of Xorg are you running?
<2> X Window System Version 6.8.99.900 (6.9.0 RC 0)
<7> killall-9: And Distro?
<2> mandriva 2006.0 x86_64
<7> Hum.
<7> killall-9: Ach well, I noticed ATI have released nother driver update so I'll try that.
<2> maybe that fixes the previous fix ;-)
<7> killall-9: Heheh perhaps.
<9> hiya
