<0> i've personally filled / twice just this past week because /home is on it
<1> whyzzyrd: No, something is filling it up
<2> you guys don't slice your drives?
<1> whyzzyrd: twice in a row now
<3> ouch
<4> Tamahome: sometimes I use user quotas instead
<4> depends on the task..
<0> well these aren't machines you should be tossing files around on
<0> but its all we have
<3> Tamahome: I do for /home if users are allowed to file there - quota or no quota
<3> Tamahome: but for home use or pure server, no
<2> I just figure it's hella easier to swap in a new disk if the partition is sliced
<0> i've taken to LVMing everything
<2> same with /var
<2> I haven't fiddled with LVM ever
<0> make it nice and tight and then expand as needed. i have like 80G of free lvm space on this machine that could be allocated anywhere at any time while mounted

<2> well, except the Windows implementation, which I'm not fond of ("dynamic disk")
<0> its pretty hot
<3> Tamahome: depends on the drives. not slicing reduces head movement, so increases read/write speed
<5> DaveHowe: I tend to slice up servers, but then stuff is either on RAID or seperate disk mirrors.
<6> my work servers have /tmp /usr /var/log, and a partition for whatever data the server is using so it can be backed up easily.
<5> http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1073316059746503939
<1> I've got everything partitioned out of /
<1> /usr, /var, /home, etc.
<1> / is very static, this **** shouldn't happen
<5> du -sk /* ?
<1> whyzzyrd: Problem has been identified, someone is on it :)
<5> PolarWolf: ahh
<5> PolarWolf: /pron then
<1> Hmm, hmm
<3> whyzzyrd: its an opinion thing. if you have multiple slices on a single raid set, then you are moving all 'n' drive heads as though you were slicing up a single disk. however, if you are mirroring, it is often a good idea (expecially for databases) to give each mirrored pair its own mountpoint
<5> DaveHowe: it depends on the traffic on each slice
<3> indeed so, yes
<3> and of course the size (and ordering) of each slice. worst possible case is when the first slice on the driveset is swap, and its on a raid device so every time a swap occurs, all the drive heads head for the first sectior of the disk... then back out towards the end of the currently written area
<1> swap on seperate drives and sufficient memory not to have to touch it :P
<3> worse possible case is when swap is the first partition, the database has the last partition, and both are being hammered...
<5> I've always put swap about the middle..
<5> But nowadays, I try to spec machines with enough ram never to need it.
<3> PolarWolf: indeed so, if the setup allows for that. personally I like to have one pair for swap and os, one for data, and if there are any left, either raid them into the data pair or separate them out into another pair for database-only
<5> once you *need* your swap, you're up **** creek
<3> whyzzyrd: its amazing how often swap gets "touched" - if I didn't know better I would think the kernel had a psychological dependency on it :)
<2> Dave: the Linux memory manager is on crack
<3> Tamahome: granted. I just live with the reality, and do the best I can :)
<7> my system says it has no setenv -- help!
<8> Tamahome: Please goto http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html, and re-read your question again. Then try asking something which *does* make more sense.
<8> whoops
<8> rtfm n00b! ;)
<5> DaveHowe: I solved the swap problem on a box at work.
<0> ah he's here
<0> Lion-O: say, what's your maxrequestsperchild in that apache install that you were complaining about?
<8> OxD: I like beer ;-)
<8> hmm, lessee
<2> LOL!
<8> OxD: 10000, I used the example in the config file (it warned about memory leaks).
<0> woah
<0> haha. try like 500 :)
<0> i actually set mine very low. reduces problems.
<8> OxD: hmmm. Well, I can't right now 8)
<8> OxD: I played with that setting too but it didn't have much effect.
<0> lies :)
<1> Feck, spilled coke on the keyboard
<5> PolarWolf: lol
<5> PolarWolf: much?
<1> Ah well, if the "a" starts missing, you know it sticks :)
<1> whyzzyrd: Naw
<8> ah, the man is back ;)
<8> PolarWolf: y0
<1> Lion-O: Ey
<9> hi
<9> does anybody here 'got the LPI ?
<8> I got an LP but hardly ever play it :)
<2> o/~ I'll stir fry you in my wok!

<8> wantoch: Why don't you check out http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ? Maybe you'll learn how to ask more meaningful questions...
<8> yoz: yeah well, it can't be helped.
<10> sorry
<10> xD
<10> I'm not a newbie
<11> Lion-O: yeah.. it's not capable.

<11> Tamahome: you can sell devise.
<8> wantoch: not unless you ask a meaningfull question which can actually be answered.
<10> I'm using the alsa driver
<1> aren't we all?
<11> wantoch: stop blabbering ****e.. it doesn't help you nor us to give you helpful hints.
<10> sok
<10> ok
<10> How can I get my sound card's line device ?
<10> /dev/dsp ?
<10> I dont mind
<0> if you're running in oss mode
<0> alsa uses a different one i think
<10> how can I know if i'm running in oss mode ?
<0> check the drivers loaded
<0> or your kernel config
<0> alsa is the new framework. it does have an oss compat mode. there are also a few cards not yet ported to alsa
<0> good god. two years of logs to sync
<10> I've no modules OSS loaded (in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules)
<10> I'm using Slackware
<0> god help you
<10> serioulsy ?
<13> hello everone
<10> currently I can heard the sound from my sound card's line
<0> wantoch: might want to confirm with google, but if you're using alsa /dev/snd is probably where youw ant to look
<0> s/youw ant/you want/
<10> but when I try to recover by typping $ cat /dev/dsp > raw.au
<10> I heard nothing by playing it
<0> heh
<10> ok
<10> thx
<0> why you'd do that instead of using a recording program is beyond me
<10> but here is a lot of files
<0> yes
<13> could someone help me with a dns problem I am having
<10> because I'm trying to set up a web radio
<13> i know it seems really stupid
<10> x2xtrem > /etc/resolv.conf
<13> but I'm trying to decommision my old box as I got a new server so i'm setting up dns on my new server but when I start named i get errors saying my named files can't be found based on the path..but i'm freaking looking at them!!
<13> they are there
<13> "zone 18.196.123.24.in-addr.arpa/IN: loading master file /var/named/chroot/var/named/24.123.195: file not found
<13> "
<13> [root@xnet named]# ls
<13> 24.123.195
<8> x2xtreme: RTFM comes to mind.
