<0> there we go
<1> Well, I like Pern, of course. But there's other stuff I like of hers too.
<2> Emerson: Brin's not too bad, but the same issue with plot lines. The Honor books are quite well written, but the story doesn't change much.
<1> mrm. Honor? As in Honor Harrington? by Weber?
<3> McCaffrey also used 'the ships that sang' in her Crystal singer books as well
<2> Wait. Wrong David.
<0> ThomasM: the Uplift Universe is some of the best Sci-Fi I've ever read
<2> Emerson: Brin is Uplift? Oh. He ****ing rocks.
<0> ThomasM: yes
<2> Emerson: Simmons is quite nice. I got a lot of enjoyment out of the Ilium set, and keep looking for the first Hyperion in book stores.
<2> Actually...
<0> ThomasM: I own both the Hyperion Cantos and the Endymion Cantos, I actually just re-read them this week while I was on the road
<2> syn-ack: Sorry. To answer your question, I've not even heard of Live OneCare. What is it?
<4> intergrated **** for winders.... one.live.com

<0> ThomasM: however, one sci-fi written who never won a hugo is Phillip K ****
<4> ThomasM: A/V Spyware blah blah blah
<0> ack, writter, and he is ****ing amazing.
<2> Emerson: He's great. I've never been impressed with the quality of his writing, but the quality of his ideas is quite high.
<0> laptop keybords .. ****ing ****, and I have USB keyboard plugged into my PS3 right now
<2> I'm a diction nazi. I really, really like good writing. Many sci-fi authors don't have the writing skill to match their ideas.
<2> Emerson: Laptop keyboards beat desktop keyboards any day, unless it's an old clickity-clack.
<1> Oh. ThomasM - by the way, are you doing any writing?
<4> Emerson: Heh, I'm so used to my lappy keyboard that I have trouble adjusting to my desktops keyboard
<2> Viking667: I keep meaning to and not. :)
<1> heh.
<2> Viking667: Hrm. Thanks for reminding me, though. That could be a good anti-burnout.
<1> mmmmm.
<1> like me. I have to learn to compose tunes... on a computer, no less. Whether I use a tracker(milkytracker/SchismTracker), or I use a MIDI program (rosegarden).
<0> ThomasM: the laptop is about 5 years old
<0> it's a fuji E series, one of the best laptops I've ever owned..
<2> Viking667: TablEdit (sp?) is quite handy for composition.
<0> I next laptop will be a fuji as well, they are costly but worth every penny
<2> Viking667: And why do you have to learn to compose tunes on a computer? Why not on a piano, or a guitar, or some other solid object? :)
<0> **** my cable just hickuped in the middle of "Rome" wtf
<1> ThomasM: because I have one wife who doesn't like to hear tunes being practiced.
<2> Ah.
<4> ThomasM: Im sorry its onecare.live.com
<2> Yamaha sells a really nice keyboard, with no fancy buttons and menus and whatnot, and wicked action, for about $300. I've been seriously considering buying that'n.
<1> I've GOT a guitar, not that I've played it in over 15 years... I've also got a trumpet, two recorders, and three or four harmonicas.
<1> TablEdit?
<3> it really helps to have a metronome (real or digital) when mixing. don't have to fudge time scales that way
<2> Viking667: Google TEFView. I don't know the name of their main software.
<2> My wife really enjoys it. When I told her I was thinking about adding "Learn new songs on the mandolin|banjo|guitar|whatever" to my list of things to do to relax, she got all happy.
<2> s/it/it when I practice|compose/
<1> Yeesh. Wish mine were like that.
<2> I should really practice my banjo. Maybe I'll run to the store tomorrow and pick up some finger picks.
<2> Viking667: Sound proof a room or somethin'.
<1> not enough rooms.
<2> syn-ack: You're thinking about it for yourself, or for friends/company?
<3> Philip Jos Farmer wrote some interesting stuff too
<4> ThomasM: Im doing the 90 day trial of it so far....
<4> Ive 89 days to go
<4> ThomasM: I was just wondering if you had heard of it and what you thought ab out it is all...
<4> Apparently you have not. :p
<5> is there an openvpn and rdp program for console? I don't have X at the moment. only an old laptop without X
<2> Apprently. :D
<2> Yummy: You can set up VNC. They're also xrdp. As for openvpn, there's you know, openvpn.
<2> XyZzY: Thanks for the recommendation on Bain. I've some of his stuff on the way, now.
<2> syn-ack: Meh. That song is good, but it gets old.
<3> ThomasM: yeah, I've had to grab a few more of his works as well
<4> ThomasM: Ive just got the whole album playing... mearly the next song on the playlist. :p
<1> Right. Time I went.
<1> Night all.
<2> G'night.
<3> ThomasM: ever read "Copernick s Rebellion" Frankowski, Leo - another interesting book
<2> Can't say I have.
<3> he was speculating about genetic manipulation when it was still a fringe science
<6> man I'm a terrible human being
<2> Meh. I'm not letting myself order Hyperion. Trying to save money, lately.
<2> me sulks.
<6> http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17760452
<6> I read that and I want to badly to post something ignorant in the thread

<2> Gah. Insert '/' where appropriate.
<2> TBT: "Board does not exist"
<3> o/~ hello dolly, hello dolly, it's so nice to have you back where you belong o/~ takes on a whole new meaning now :)
<6> [Serious] A Co-worker was killed at work today
<6> One of the guys I work with was found dead under a laser today, pinned between it and the cutting bed.
<6> It must have happened fast, there was 2 guys standing about 40 (max) feet away from where he was found, and didn't hear or see anything.
<6> noone knows for sure how it happened yet though.
<6> I voulunteered to tell the night and graveyard shift that wasnt at work when it happened (around 1:00-1:30 this afternoon). That was harder than i thought it would be.
<6> Just kinda working through it atm. Still kinda numb. I talked to the guy earlier in the day.
<5> ThomasM: xrdp is for X. I need something for console
<2> Yummy: ssh? screen?
<2> To be able to log in remotely to a console? SSH.
<2> To attach/detach to an active session in the console: screen.
<6> did all of that get through?
<5> ThomasM: no. I need to be able to connect to a remote windows system.
<6> and I want really badly to paste in
<6> http://writingcompany.blogs.com/this_isnt_writing_its_typ/images/goldfinger_laser.jpg
<2> TenBaseT: 'Just kinda working through it atm...' is what you ended with.
<5> sorry I didnt mention that
<7> Yummy: you need x for this and rdesktop
<7> and/or vnc
<2> Yummy: You want to remote into a windows system from the console? And do what?
<6> yeah that was the end of it
<6> anyway, the goldfinger picture seems like it needs to be posted.
<6> but then again I'm an ***
<2> TenBaseT: Ah. I agree. :P
<2> syn-ack: The backup bit looks handy. Don't know that I see any need for myself for any of its other bits.
<5> ThomasM: I have a checkpoint fw at my office, I am now connecting via SecureClient (windows) and remote desktop to logon to my windows box at my office. I want to use openvpn and a RDP program to do the same thing. Is it possible to do so without X ? I have vnc installed on that workstation, how can I connect to it via console once I have established my vpn connection
<3> TenBaseT: heh. ****s.
<4> ThomasM: its not too bad... my only bitch about it thus far is that the A/V is too slow.
<2> Yummy: So, VPN issues aside, what you're trying to do is to connect to a VNC service from a console linux box with no X server?
<2> syn-ack: All A/V is too slow, that I've found. I can't stand that crap. In order to be effective, it has to have a huge ****ing footprint and take for-****ing-ever.
<4> ThomasM: I dont know, McAffe has a VERY nice product now.
<2> Not that I've seen come installed on a box. All the new Dell systems with McAfee on 'em are just as bad as I expected.
<2> Antivirus software is only necessary if you're doing things that might get your viruses. It's so much simpler to A) not do those things, or B) do those things within a sandbox.
<5> ThomasM: yes, or connect via RDP, like xrdp, if there is such a tool for console
<4> ThomasM: I havent gotten a virus in like 8 or so years but Im paranoid.
<4> Im more worried about other malware now.
<2> Yummy: Unless you can find a framebuffer VNC client, you really just need to break down and install an X server.
<3> a/v software has a major limitation. it can't know when a program has byp***ed the normal OS ans scribbled something directly to a file. therefore; it has to scan and rescan the files over and over.
<2> Yummy: xrdp is an RDP server. There are common RDP clients for linux, though, and I'm fairly certain they all require X.
<3> it would make more sense to have a/v software on a controlled NAS device (or similar) then you could know exactly what modified a file. eg a layer between the software and the storage
<4> ThomasM: They all do.
<3> the RDP clients work pretty well to
<5> XyZzY: got one for console ?
<3> Yummy: nope
<4> Yummy: For the last time, there arent any.
<4> Period.
<4> Yummy: install X, Stop bitching and enjoy
<5> syn-ack: hehe, it's not that. my old laptop is OLD. 90mb ram, 233mhz. not sure it'll handle X properly. I am also running apache
<4> Ive gotten X to run on less.
<3> Yummy: so run one of the lighter X servers
<4> Now, I go smoke.
<5> hehe
<5> XyZzY: what would you recommend as a lighter X ?
<3> dunno blackbox maybe?
<7> buy a new laptop
<4> X comes with a wm. Use it.
<4> Hell use Ratpoison if you need to
<4> brb (again)
<5> k
<2> I made biscuits for breakfast this morning, and had originally planned on doubling the batch. I got as far as doing double the butter, and then promptly forgot to double anything else. But damn these are some good biscuits. I've since changed the recipe.
<8> really rich and flaky ?
<3> ThomasM: think that's the problem with most modern restaurants. they don't cook with butter anymore
<3> I'm like "GOD DAMN IT COOK WITH ****ING BUTTER YOU ***TARDS"
<3> </soapbox>
<2> whitecap: Yep. New recipe, too, that was set up so you barely handled the dough at all and didn't actually make round biscuits (spread it out to form a square on a cookie sheet, and do a few light cuts for separation). Turned out great.
<8> outlawed in .ca us soon it looks like, transfats.
<2> XyZzY: Except for a couple of minor things, I actually prefer margarine to butter.
<3> that's Cre-tin
<3> </monster-inc>
<2> whitecap: http://www.recipezaar.com/17227 With 1/2 cup butter.
