<0> oh holdon <1> t <2> I've been itching something ugly after a piano. Might have to buy a really nice electric or something soon. <3> Sagoro: probably not. Too full of clock wraps. <1> Viking667: Yeah, I doubt it too <4> docfu: X32033 X02200 <1> Viking667: i'm sure if it could, though, it'd be lightening fast <3> and godawfully ugly. <1> Yeah <2> siglite: Add a D, or an Am <4> ThomasM: I put an Am in there and it sounded horrid. <4> ThomasM: D sounded too happy for my taste. <3> one intro I love, though it's not a guitar one; is Brothers In Arms. <2> siglite: G Em D Am
<4> ThomasM: I like that <2> It does sound a bit too well-rounded, though. I can hear the too-happy D you're talking about. <4> I'm a minor whore. <1> No, you're a major hwore <5> oo a muppet chord <2> Me, too. <1> I spoke to several of your pimps last night and they told me so <0> hmm <0> almost got happy birthday <4> they just mad cuz dey dee-n git day moeneey <0> heh <2> siglite: If I feel like it next year, I'll have to write down my cl***ical-guitar rendition of Greensleeves. It's ****ing beautiful. I picked it out, and gave up doing anything else on the guitar for six months as it all sounded like crap. <4> ThomasM: that probably rocks <4> ThomasM: to hell with writing it down, record it. <2> siglite: I might do that. I was just thinking I couldn't really be bothered to write down all those little notes and the exact timing. <4> ThomasM: that's what the tab publishers are for. To figure out what the hell we're playing. <3> ThomasM: lol. Did you record it? <3> "tab publishers"? <0> hehehe <1> So, I got this friend of mine who is a crack head...he was in california last week...and I picked him from the airport to take him home...he asks me to take him somewhere to pick up some crack....So, I agreed <2> Nah. I will next year, when I brush up on it again in case I have to play it for Christmas. <1> today, I got a call from his wife asking if we stopped somewhere before I brought him home <0> hahaha <2> Flamenco rolls and grace notes and high speed notes make for a wicked Greensleeves. <4> Viking667: yeah, all those books on the shelf at the guitar store full of tab. <0> Sagoro and? <1> docfu: I said no <3> I haven't been in a music store for many a year. <0> i'm sorry is this supposed to be funny? <3> Man, I wanna learn piano too <4> ThomasM: man, flamenco kicks ***. I can't play it worth a crap, but god I love listening to it. <0> siglite i like my bossa nova <4> I lack any cl***ical fingerpicking skills at all. <4> if I hold my ***cheeks just right I can properly fingerpick stairway. <3> I *used* to have cl***ical fingering, now I got none. <2> siglite: Get a cl***ical guitar and stick around Em and Am with a few complimentary chords, and nobody'll know the difference. You don't have to be all that good to play plateau-level flamenco. It's getting above the standard plateau that requires talent. <1> docfu: He gets his crack/coke from a guy named Anthony...so, she asks me...cause my friend and I worked for the same compnay at one time..."did you remember anthony from $common_workplace?" <2> siglite: Oh, well, NM. Stairway is pretty slow. :P <4> see? <4> NO cl***ical fingerpicking skills./ <1> docfu: Thankfully, there was a guy named anthony at $common_workplace...so, I said yead...he worked in the NOC <2> siglite: Come play my banjo sometime. :P <4> I've never even picked one up <0> ThomasM the RJ is sent <1> docfu: I mean...what do I say to one my best friend's wives? "yes, he's a crack head, just get over it"? <0> Sagoro heh <2> siglite: Playing the banjo is all about finding a way to fit some really neat **** into a roll--a pattern of hitting the strings that you modify just enough to make the song jump out. <0> Sagoro why? something else happen? <0> ThomasM oh i think the robjert johnson will take you to a whole new level of blues <1> docfu: she'll divorce him and take the kids.... <4> ThomasM: yeah, I respect banjo players. We have lots of 'em around here, and some of 'em are flat amazing. <1> docfu: that would kill him <0> Sagoro ahh <1> of course, I'm sure crack will too <1> eventually
<2> siglite: Yep. I'm just starting. My dad could play dueling banjos all by himself. Don't think I'll ever get that good, though. <4> ThomasM: dueling banjos is hard enough on guitar. <4> the banjo is SMOKIN' in that tune. <2> I just can't be bothered to breach the instrument plateau on any of my instruments save for brief forays to make what I hear come out of the instrument. <1> bbiab <4> you know <4> people make some damned good music all the time with mediocre technical skills. <2> It's only if I make up something truly amazing that I'll fight and fight to get all my little digits to move together _just_ right. <3> who remembers J. J. Cale? <4> and the fact that damned good music occurs so often with mediocre technical skills tells me it's all in the ear, not the finger. <3> ahh. me just remembered the guy with Autism who shocked the hell out of a bar by playing Flight of the bumblebee on the piano... <5> siglite: so true. it's why a piano is 'detuned' at the lower and upper ends to make it sound better <3> XyZzY: mmmm. Wondered why that was. <4> I mean, I consider myself a mediocre guitarist, at BEST. That's being generous. I completely lack any understanding of guitar/music theory (I'm working on that) but I hear so much **** on the radio and go "jeeze, how is this guy a star?" <2> Lion-O: As a side note for your highlight history, I've found that with that weird firefox not loading a site issue, if I have another computer on the network query the site, then firefox will be able to open it. And it's only firefox that starts it. <4> I've actually managed to make my fingers sore. <5> Viking667: yup. if you tune it to exactly follow the mathematical formula for the notes it would not sound right <2> siglite: Yeah. You see a lot of people go into drop-D and playing power chords and making lots and lots of money. <4> ThomasM: yeah. I swear I detest drop D now, unless you're playing Canon in D. <3> what's "drop D"? <5> siglite: blame 'american idol' and other such crappola <2> Viking667: The bottom note tuned down a whole step. <3> ah. <4> when I hear drop D, the first thing that goes through my head is "****ing *****." <2> siglite: I use it for dueling banjos on the guitar, for that little "Yankee Doodle" jump that sounds so much better at the very bottom of the baseline. <4> "****ing *****" is usually followed by something like "Derek Trucks NEVER drop D tunes." <0> i could probably do dueling banjos on a b*** ok <0> but this backpacker is too hard for now <2> siglite: So you take guitar cl***es? Or at least have an instructor or something? <4> ThomasM: yeah, I got me a berkely school of music edumucated guitar teacher to learn me sum theory (and a little technical stuff along the way) <2> siglite: ****ing sweet. <4> you should hear this guy. <4> incredible. <4> on anything with strings, really. <4> the cool thing is, I have him teaching my kid too. <4> we go in for an hour a week, I get the first half hour, the boy gets the second. <0> how old is your kid? <4> 9 <3> guess being married to someone who hates music being practiced isn't the best thing for developing skills. <2> siglite: I'd taken a few months of those by-the-numbers piano lessons when I was little (and rather disliked it), and did woodwinds in the school band. When I lived with my grandmother for a few months after 7th grade, she looked at me and knew my math/computer history, and taught me to play heavy Beethoven amidst strong lessons in music theory. <0> thomasM get that mp3? <4> I got him this super cool little 3/4 lenght johnson strat <3> ThomasM: lol. <2> siglite: The next time I spent time with her, she grabbed a simple chord at the top melody book and made me make up my own harmonies for everything I played. <3> docfu: what mp3? <0> viking667 some robert johnson <2> siglite: Music theory is teh rox0r. :) <3> ah. <2> docfu: Oi. Yeah, got it. Downloading now. <4> ThomasM: yeah, that's cool. I can improv fine in major, minor, and pentatonics, but I'm clueless on how to use the various modes, and some of the less common scales. If I can wrap my head around modes, I might get good or something. <3> First time I came across pentatonic was with J.M.Jarre's China album... <3> fell in love with it. <4> my wife is taking music 101 in college right now, and she's asking me theory questions. <4> and I'm like ****... uh... <2> siglite: Well, your improv sounds a ways above mine. I can screw around a bit in pentatonics (because there are so few notes), and can sit in a minor mode and play for hours, but most of my improv isn't all that great. Somewhere in there I'll find something beautiful and explore it for a few days, and then drop it by the wayside if it doesn't grow. <4> had to get out a piece of paper, and map out four scales... whole-step whole-step half step, whole-step whole-step half-step <2> Getting down into a good minor-chord and a few major highlights groove is great for fingerpicking. You can have at it, playing tunes against themselves and experimenting until your fingers burn. <4> I can outright shred on pentatonics and the major scale. <4> what I need is for my kid to get good enough to play rythm for me :) <2> siglite: Sounds like you got him a good teacher. <4> where I can just have him run through chord progressoins <4> and I can play around those <3> brb. the wife wants her feet rubbed. <4> damn <5> My major instument is my voice. given any person, I can emulate thier singing style <4> my wife would be SOL. <3> I get grumpy wife if I don't. <2> That was awesome when I finally got good enough to keep up with my Dad, at least knowing which chord switch was probably coming. He's a bluegr*** guy, and it gets pretty predictable except in those little spots it isn't and you go nuts. <3> Mind you, I still have to be careful. <2> XyZzY: Nice. I can't sing worth ****. I've tried to train it some, but it just isn't happening. <4> ThomasM: more predictable than jazz. Good god jazz guitarists have some defective mental switch.
