<0> OxD: hi there
<1> OxD: sure, just rename .html to .jsp and it will
<2> it certainly has a normal web server port if you don't want to put a proxy in front of it (god knows why)
<3> OldMonk: Sorry about that. Missed it. :|
<2> no kidding. never tried it ;)
<4> still, the common behaviour is running Apache for your web-based issues and Tomcat for the other stuff.
<4> or get the Sun Java Webserver and have it all in one package 8)
<2> as well as restarting tomcat every so often because thats how java apps roll
<2> Lion-O: actually, you toyed with websphere 'community edition'?
<4> OxD: quite frankly I wonder if thats java or tomcat.
<5> anyone here have a Samsung camcorder? are they good?
<2> Lion-O: java. weblogic, et al are all like that
<4> OxD: lately I've been getting a little unimpressed with apache due to memory leaks, on several servers of mine. All of 'm don't restart apache during logrotation, while most of my colleagues and such do. I dunno, I think its fishy.

<2> though i still haven't determined if its inate in java or that java is, for some reason, hard to code or that java programmers just **** ;)
<2> Lion-O: hm. honestly, i've never seen that. 1.3 or 2.0?
<4> OxD: websphere? No, I've messed with SunONE 6.1SP5, Java webserver 7 preview, Sun Application server enterprise and their latest EE 5 PE9 version.
<2> its actually pretty neat. tomcat wrapped up in j2ee ****
<4> OxD: 1.3, with PHP setup so I'm not positive (yet) where to put the full blame. But all I see is that its gobbling up memory without releasing it. A restart fixes everything.
<2> so you get to front it with apache and use ajp but its like a sunone/weblogic type app server
<2> db pools and all that fun stuff
<6> php in cgi mode isn't the best of solutions
<6> I'd consider using apache as frontend
<4> PolarWolf: Well, I dumped it alltogether and now I don't have any issues while my webserver has been running for 1.5 month straight now.
<2> Lion-O: i'd look more in the direction of php. we do a lot of heavy apache 1.3 for static pages and mod perl. the only oddities i see are problems with the mod_compress or whatever and occasionally cpu-usage freakouts on one child
<4> I still need to get more familiar with dtrace, then I'll /really/ be able to see wtf is going on.
<2> but the child we can just zap with a kill
<4> OxD: one thing though; how often does it get restarted at your place? logrotation is done 'gracefull' or killed?
<2> graceful i'm pretty sure
<4> OxD: interesting.
<4> OxD: I've seen many implementations which simply kill or restart the webserver, hence my rising (not fully founded) suspicions.
<2> i don't think we can afford even the rolling downtime
<2> right
<2> i'm not 100% on that. lemme see here
<2> the curse of a vpn ;)
<4> but tomcat is indeed very nice. (well, IMO :))
<2> oh i'm a fan
<4> oh.. like I said, its hopeless ;)
<2> for the love of god
<4> OxD: uh oh
<5> tomcat isn't a J2EE container, is it?
<7> Lion-O; you were right yesterday, the partition i had my root file system mounted had a bad group descriptor i tried fsck but didnt help, but good thing all my stuff was in /var so my data was safe, had to build all the configuration files back from backup.
<4> OxD: /etc/logrotate.conf ?
<2> Lion-O: BAHAHAHA
<2> god no. that'd be easy to find
<4> OxD: hehehe
<4> DevZer0: good to hear things worked out.
<7> Lion-O, yes phew! my whole apartment was down, phone etc etc :-(
<8> hey ***clowns
<5> hey buttmonkey
<7> and i think it was about time to change distros, i was using an old version of whitebox. so good excuse to move to something else. so i installed Cent OS 4
<2> Lion-O: i have no ****ing idea :)
<2> if i didn't see a directory full of rotated http logs, i'd say we didn't
<2> ah hah
<2> lookit that. we do a full stop and start...wtf
<4> lol
<2> from crontab
<2> via logrotate
<2> with a config in /usr/local/etc/
<4> I promise I won't laugh ;)
<2> dude, i'm laughing
<4> well, /usr/local/etc surely is an interesting new approach ;)
<2> we have some old school folks
<2> its only due to me and one of my cowworkers that we're rolling out servers that use redhat packages instead of apache and friends build from source every time
<4> OxD: good job there.. man, some people don't seem to think beyond installation so it seems.
<2> there's very little to no reason to build stuff like that from source. it only causes trouble
<2> though i'm learning mysql is best done from source with a dedicated version of glibc
<2> hah http://quotes.linuxops.net/index.php?op=view&id=807
<4> oh wow, good of you to remind me OxD
<2> ?
<4> "Lion-O: that very first moment he ripped the S open".. I was planning to run the intro on the TV to see what happens if I turn the volume up to 'explode'. I couldn't do that last night 8)

<2> wtf
<2> how did xine break overnight?
<1> mplayer
<2> no, i use the xine engine in amarok
<2> and it WAS working
<2> aaagh
<2> ok. somehow it was uninstalled. nice.
<0> *g*
<1> good opportunity to install mplayer then :)
<2> oh i have mplayer. it just doesn't help :P
<2> wonder how the hell that happened
<9> that
<9> 's what you get for using apt-get instead of dselect
<2> yum dude
<2> and i've yet to see apt just remove **** without my knowing
<1> only if you dist-upgrade
<2> yeah, but i read what its removing
<1> i log it
<2> not a bad idea
