<0> thats the gentoo box... It seems have "a few" b0rked sshd daemons.
<1> just don't blame gentoo for it..
<0> K_F: oh, absolutely not. This was a mere case of chosing the wrong tool for the job. Its simply slowly becoming more clear to me that when my boss tells me "We had some issues with our former admins" they're not excaggerating.
<1> Lion-O: yeah, you've explained some interesting scenarios
<0> K_F: this has some very weird **** on it.. It almost looks as if they're stopping/starting the sql server every single day
<1> a very veird way of freeing memory
<2> Maybe they wanted consistent backups
<0> PolarWolf: maybe, but there's nothing in the logs on that.. And even then; mysqldump can lock tables.
<2> Lion-O: Yeah, well, I understand the admins weren't that good
<0> OMFG
<0> cron.hourly # cat clearmysqllog
<0> #!/bin/sh
<0> > /opt/mysql/var/db1.log
<3> haha
<4> hahahaha
<0> thats in /etc/cron.hourly.

<3> man thats a HUGE hammer
<0> jeezus.. That might explain the restart
<4> so who were these clued admins?
<5> rofl
<0> Jostein: there is only one ;) Its someone I don't know personally, but for some reason my boss wasn't pleased with him and as such sacked him.
<4> sounds like a good move
<5> *nod*
<5> ;)
<0> Jostein: I even discovered irc logs where he's asking questions about trivial issues on IRC :)
<4> haha
<1> lol
<0> Despite all this **** I'm actually quite happy.. I have 3 database servers and 3 webservers at my disposal. All operating individually and the "round robin" effect has been made by putting x amount of sites on server '1' and y amount on server '2'. If I start cleaning up I /might/ even free up a lot of resources allowing me to shrink the farm a little.
<1> "round robin" effect?
<0> Perhaps put up a master/slave scenario on the mysql servers (/maybe/ considering pgsql)
<1> doesn't sound like any round-robin, but rather load distribution
<0> K_F: well... The plan was to reduce and spread the load ;)
<0> K_F: aah, indeed. Wrong term there
<1> gotcha
<1> master/slave scenario on your mysql servers probably wouldn't work in your setup btw
<1> as it requires to write to the master
<1> doesn't work too well in general purpose settings / relatively small sites
<1> but very nice for write once read-many setups
<0> indeed.
<0> K_F: I'll still need to start by actually disecting the current scenario. Once I have all data in an OO sheet I can work my way form there.
<1> jup
<0> still, when looking at the latest mess I think I'll change my original idea and start with the database servers. If something happens to those we're probably really ****ed considering the state of the backups.
<1> got around to restore everything but it took slightly longer than I would've hoped
<0> K_F: *nod*
<1> that was a complete HDD failure though
<6> almost done bringing 40 gigs from my lappy to my server
<1> I'm sure you remember my whining :)
<1> resulted in a new server, and things are better than ever
<1> well, except the lack of visitors, but can't blame the server for that
<0> I think I may have to settle for a file copy for now. Hmm, once I can determine when the server is going down I /could/ cheat by hacking my way into it (--skip-grant-tables) in order to forcefully allowing myself to setup a real backup.
<1> just run some mysqldumps
<0> K_F: exactly.
<1> the trouble I ran into there was related to mixed character sets between databases
<7> hi to all
<1> ramjanay: heya
<0> K_F: auch, thats gotta be nasty when first encountering that. How did you deal with it?
<1> Lion-O: well, some of it was poor design, putting UTF data into tables that were defined as iso et cetera
<1> Lion-O: and the lack of SET NAMES = 'utf-8' for the connections
<1> but it wasn't too much of an issue once I got things properly set up
<0> K_F: aah, gotcha
<0> WHAT THE ****
<1> what?
<0> I'm wondering if this box isn't compromised or something... you have got to be kidding me...
<0> /etc/crontab:
<1> ouch
<0> # check scripts in cron.hourly, cron.daily, cron.weekly and cron.monthly
<0> 0 * * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly
<0> 1 3 * * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.daily
<0> 15 4 * * 6 root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.weekly
<0> 30 5 1 * * root rm -f /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.monthly
<4> eh?
<1> eh
<0> eh indeed..
<8> woo hoo...
<1> Jostein: beer up here

<0> I've seen a lot but this is new for me ;)
<4> Lion-O: hehehe
<4> K_F: I was thinking about bedding early this useless day :P
<8> 18MB out of the HVSC...
<0> I'm probably not qualified for the job ;)
<1> Jostein: sounds boring... beer up here
<0> Howdy MattJ !
<0> Jostein: free beer man!
<9> Lion-O: yo, d00d. ;-) *ducks*
<1> Lion-O: in his defence, it would involve spending time with me, so it isn't completely free :p
<0> K_F: hehehe
<4> K_F: nah. I would only regain my now somewhat cured hangover
<1> Jostein: your loss :)
<4> yup
<6> Is it difficult to install PHP onto SBS2003?
<1> Steakk: probably not
<1> http://no2.php.net/install.windows would apply
<10> damned router
<1> 21:52 < K_F> http://no2.php.net/install.windows would apply
<10> K_F, I'm going to tie it into IIS though...thats prolly where the trick comes into play
<1> ?
<11> Matt
<4> there should be install guides for IIS too
<9> Hi Nanuq
<4> dont remember if it requires registry tweaking or not
<1> Jostein: not
<1> http://no2.php.net/manual/en/install.windows.iis.php
<4> oh well. I dont need it
<4> Im not tainting my IIS with PHP :P
<1> Jostein: hasn't required registry tweaking since IIS3
<4> ah, ok
<1> which, hopefully, SBS2003 doesn't come with :)
<1> Jostein: fight going on in the OLUG mailing list btw
<4> oh? good drama?
<1> ok I guess
<1> Jostein: https://init.linpro.no/pipermail/olug.linux.no/olug-list/2007-February/001694.html is one of the posts in the thread
<1> 21:57 <@bitlbee> MSN - Error: MSN: Error reported by switchboard server: Authentication failed
<1> and it keeps sending me from one server to the other and getting odd responses
<4> K_F: no problems here today
<1> Jostein: well, I'm connected
<1> well, except now, when I did a reconnect..
<4> MSN has detected that you use a hacker-client
<1> :)
<1> ultimately worse, using linux?
<4> the biggest nono? you are not using vista :P
<1> Jostein: anyways, it is about that Ubuntu poster I showed you the other day
<1> Jostein: remember I commented on it, and iirc you did too
<12> Wells ****s :P
<1> Jostein: has evolved into an arugument about whether OLUG is/should be distro neutral or not
<4> K_F: gotta love linux users :P
<13> K_F: **** distro neutrality, make them all use Slackware :)
<4> hahahaha
<8> uhmmm, how about System III ?
<1> Viking667: System V at least :)
<8> or Unix Version 7 /
<4> CP/M!
<1> 3270
<8> Naah. Why give them TCP/IP?
<8> 3270 is still used these days.
<1> Viking667: I know.. I use it every day
<8> ah well.
<1> Jostein: seems like I'm missing out on fun both in Aalesund and Sandnes, lots of GHB around, so should be enough of randy teenagers :p
<4> haha
<1> Jostein: police has conluded that it is something wrong with the shipment
<1> steady consumption but more reported cases
<4> right
<1> and here I am, sitting alone in my apartment
<1> at least I have La Vie En Rose (Instrumental) playing
