<0> Tamahome: it gets you jobs though
<1> whyzzyrd: LOL
<1> Jostein: true, job boards seem full of 'em... but not for greenies
<0> Tamahome: more stuff I have, easier to get a -well- paying job
<1> they all want people with "3-5 years experience"
<1> **** that ****
<0> heh
<2> Jostein_: more stuff you have, the more I see, Certificate monkey, no experience.
<0> whyzzyrd: Ive been fooling with computers for 20 years+
<0> whyzzyrd: Sure. there are cert monkeys as well, just that Im an EE so I need -some- sort of papers to flash to make it to the interview
<3> Jostein_: you haven't knocked any up yet have you?
<2> Jostein_: I still see no worth to many certificates. Like, MCSE, CCNA, RHCE etc.
<0> whyzzyrd: I can see the value in knowing both sides of the job
<1> oh no, CCNA *definitely* separates the wheat from the chaff
<1> have you seen those Cisco books? holy ****

<4> I'd love a pile of certs and a degree. They have worth if you're going to work for a non-technical company 'cause the HR/managers have no idea what experience is really worth.
<4> The CCNA test is a bitch.
<2> Tamahome: no. CCN*P* seperates the wheat from the chaff.
<4> I took the CCNA Boot Camp with BU and while it was a great course and I had a really good teacher... the test screwed me.
<0> I havent seen the Cisco books, but I cna only imagine
<4> No, CCIE seperates, etc.,
<1> Cerulean: I'd probably have bombed it as well
<1> I used to have a Citrix cert
<4> I don't test well to begin with... and the test is 55 questions in 90 minutes, which is less than 2 minutes per question, but you get a random 1 to 3 "lab" questions where you get a virtual lab that's broken and you have to figure it out. There's also a lot of math, IP conversion and such
<0> whyzzyrd: anyway. A combined DBA/dev cert aint bad. sure ... experience is vital, but a cert doesnt mean monkey per definition
<4> The "lab" questions can take 5-15 minutes each, so you get even *less* time to think about the other 52 or so questions.
<1> it's that whole experience chicken and egg bull**** I can't stand
<4> I think I might have p***ed had I had another 30-60 minutes
<1> Fred :)
<5> afternoon Sean
<1> evening now
<1> after 5 here
<2> Jostein_: no. but someone with 20 certs can't possibly be qualified in all of em.
<6> evenin' Fred
<0> whyzzyrd: indeed
<1> Russ: so, how many things did 2.6.15 break for you? :P
<6> Tamahome: Seems fine so far
<6> Tamahome: Although cdrecord is only burning at 4x. I think I blame Schilling for that, though
<4> The problem I've seen with certs is that I've run into too many people who were like... pumping gas or something and suddenly saw money in the IT field, read a book, and got their CCNA/MCSE or whatnot and now they're in my field and they don't know crap.
<6> Tamahome: I installed it on my mail server and my web/nfs server.
<4> They're just the type of person who can read a book, take notes, use a yellow highlighter, and test well.
<6> Tamahome: One went from 2.6.9 and the other from .12.3
<6> Tamahome: I did remember to upgrade udev before rebooting, which no doubt helped me :)
<1> Ceru: yeah, but they know whos **** to **** to get a job
<4> Uh huh
<1> aaaaaaaaaaanyhoo... my dinner is ready
<0> CeruleanD: people like that should be tarred, feathered and then sodomized
<1> back in a bit
<6> RelDrgn: Did I show off Jia yet? :)
<2> rhowe: Jia?
<4> I can't count the number of times I've gone on interviews and seen a stack of resumes with cert logos on them and the hiring manager is looking at relatively plain resume going, "Hmmm, I don't see any mention of certifications or anything..."
<6> whyzzyrd: http://siksai.co.uk/gallery/ (***uming apache's working, post-reboot)
<6> whyzzyrd: New girlfriend
<2> rhowe: tis buggering slow
<0> CeruleanD: that's life. clueless people hire clueless people :P
<4> yup
<6> whyzzyrd: half of #linux probably just jumped on
<2> rhowe: this the grrl with a boyfriend elsewhere?
<6> whyzzyrd: For the moment, yes
<0> rhowe: cute.
<6> Jostein_: indeed :)
<7> run
<4> I got a lot of crap for my resume anyway 'cause I've had a lot of contracts, so the guy will look at my resume and go, "Hmm, wow, you've had 6 jobs in the last 2 years... you don't stay places long, huh?" "Well, they're CONTRACTS, with finite time periods. Jerk." I don't know if it's my yelling or my calling them jerks, but they never give me the job.
<8> So she's your gf, but she's someone else's gf also?
<6> synapsis: Yeah, kinda
<0> rhowe: great/too bad.
<8> rhowe: I can predict how your relationship will end now.
<9> hmm
<0> rhowe: depending on the outcome
<6> synapsis: She's been with him 3 years or so.. once we've settled on a flat, he's going to be on the receiving end of some bad news
<6> synapsis: He's a good 6000 miles away
<10> someone wake me up now!
<0> rhowe: lemme just say I absolutely ****ing -detest- cheaters.
<6> Jostein_: Yeah, well, we haven't really done anything
<6> Jostein_: Just made plans to move in together :P

<0> rhowe: I just wouldnt trust a girl that cheated with me to not cheat -on- me later
<0> ah
<2> rhowe: but isn't that moving in with intent?
<6> whyzzyrd: Sure as hell is
<7> heh
<7> rhowe needs to watch 'anything else' by woody allen
<7> perfect movie describing a woman who would begin a relationship with someone before ending their last
<6> docfu: We're gonna be watching "Il Mare" tomorrow
<6> docfu: We've been sort of half together for the last 6 months
<6> docfu: 'cept I had a girlfriend too
<7> you know
<6> docfu: So we were kinda waiting for Xiaoping to leave, which she did at the start of Jan
<11> hello all, rhowe, docfu

<7> i'll need some daytime soaps
<0> lol
<6> docfu: We'll be visiting .jp next year, probably
<6> docfu: She speaks Japanese
<7> rhowe stop in and see me
<6> docfu: Sure
<7> rhowe so do i
<0> rhowe: Ill bother her, when I need help then :P
<7> does that make me special?
<6> docfu: Somewhat
<8> Special Ed.
<6> hahaha
<7> YOU ARE GOD DAMNED RIGHT IT DOES!
<7> I'm the hardon any anime freak in this channel wants
<6> synapsis: Does Special Ed. mean the same thing in the US as it does here?
<7> look at me, i'm a ***ual tyranosaurus
<0> rhowe: "does 'utsukushii' properrly describe a girl as cute as you?" :P
<6> Jostein_: I'm not risking that, noway, nohow :)
<0> rhowe: coward *grin*
<6> Jostein_: Oh, looks quite safe :)
<1> utsukushii == "pretty"
<0> Tamahome: uutsukushii then :P
<6> Tamahome: Yeah, linear.mv.com just told me :)
<1> it's scary how much Japanese I've learned from just watching anime
<13> OONGALA BOONGALA
<0> Tamahome: Ive been watching dramas and stuff involving cute japanese girls :P
<1> with that said... CHICKEN PIE OWNS THE COSMOS
<0> Tamahome: never managed to get hooked on amies
<0> Tamahome: animes
<6> Jostein_: So, pretty much everything on Japanese TV, then? :)
<1> you take 2 things I love: 1) chicken, and 2) pie, and you put 'em together
<0> rhowe: *grin*
<13> Me either...I grew out of cartoons a long time ago ;)
<14> chinken pot pie?
<14> chicken rather :)
<1> Ed: YES.
<14> mmmm yes, indeed
<6> Tamahome: Me and Jia watched a Crayon Shinchan film last weekend.. can't remember which one it was
<0> safemode: watched afew that was -really- good, but ... the typical anime doesnt really manage to get my attention
<13> I am so ready to go home
