<4> well, when you mv ab* and you have ab and abc as files, * expands to 'ab abc', so mv sees: mv ab abc
<4> so mv then helpfully moves ab to abc - and replaces file abc with file ab
<4> your second problem is that mv has twigged you want to move lots of files, so it is expecting you to give it a target directory, which is what you wanted the first time.
