<0> i use BufferedReader for input.. when i did readLine() it blocked.. and waited <0> so i rather checked ready() periodically <1> I'm connecting to a news server and that triggers input. Then I send out a command using a PrintStream which should trigger more input but doesn't. Very odd. <0> mm <1> wolfey: right, that is what I have done too. <0> did you flush() output? <0> or dunno <0> i didnt do so low level <1> Bingo. Say no more. <0> :) <1> never used flush() and never spotted it. Thats where I went wrong, has to be. <1> wolfey: ta <0> Lion-O: well i wouldnt know if i didnt forget the same a few days ago <0> ;)) <1> hehe ;)
<1> wolfey: well, these are my first steps on Sockets and the demo programs show me a lot of examples but at this moment I'm at a point where I'm wondering if I picked things up right. Turns out I did so I have a bug somewhere. <1> so far I have this eleet NNTP reader; it connects and returns 1 line :-) <1> "server ready" :) <0> good enough;) <0> i played with sockets a lot this week <0> you know my game;) <0> but i focused on just exchanging lines of text <0> BufferedReader and PrintWriter <0> as tutorial suggested <0> http://bsn-61-107-81.dial-up.dsl.siol.net/netlines-homepage/src/netlines/ <0> Service.java and Client.java <0> i experimented a bit how to put it rigth <0> this works best <0> njoy <2> What do you guys think about this app im creating: http://temp.corgrath.com/ces.avi <-- please share comments :) <3> looks annoying imho :P <4> media play won't play it <4> eot <3> calchas: use multimedia-enabled system like Linux :P <2> annoying? =) its Genious! <3> Bouncy: too clever for me, but hey, I'm old-skool dude :) <4> why is this worth seeing or something <3> it's an overly intrusive autocompleting text field demo <2> intrusive? <3> I prefer Eclipse-style - stay quiet until asked for help OR Gnome style -- stay quiet until there's only one possibility left and typing more have no sense <3> I don't know about you but for me this cursor jumping left and right was dizzying, I'd hate such interface pretty quickly <2> Yea, im trying to fix the curso now. <2> But its advance JComponent coding then :/ <1> eeeew <1> that looks horrible to me <2> yea yea :) im working on 0.2 now! <1> no, I think the concept isn't worth it. <1> whenever there are more than one option it simply keeps gibbering. When it comes to input fields I really prefer the method of a drop down displaying all possible results. <2> Its not possible with an inputfield, ive noticed. have to create my own JCOmponent <2> or something <1> Bouncy: Not sure what you're trying to accomplish here. When being used for specific tasks I guess this could be usefull, but not for the things I'm doing 8) <5> that thing would drive me up the bloody wall! <2> what specific stuff are you doing? <2> ill show you guys! just wait! <2> ill come back into this channel and show off my world revolutionzing app :) <5> Bouncy: I detest intrusive autocompletion (OOo has it by default, or used to, drove me insane) <5> I want the app to get the hell out of my way and let me type. If I want a suggestion for autocomplete, I'll ask (Exclipse style is good) <1> aye, that goes for me on Netbeans too. <1> no completion, not anything, untill I say so. I can live with the red line I get every now and then, thats the only reason I kept that on. <5> hmm <5> no, I really *really* can't spend on more books this month <5> I do want it thoguh <5> maybe I can con work into paying for it <5> hmm, found an rtf of it <5> http://www.codeguru.com/java/tij/ <5> is that legit or some kind of warez? <6> legit <5> cool, saves me a few quid then <5> I'll buy the dead tree another month <5> presumably this is not 4th Edition then? <6> 4th edition isn't available online legitimatel <1> :) <5> this will do for now <5> I'll buy it next month <5> I prefer owning dead-tree in any case <1> thinking in Java? That can be downloaded for free, 3th edition. I have it on my intranet ever since Clackwell mentioned it.
<6> Lion-O: eckel's a nice guy too <1> Its a nice book IMO, but I have to admit that the combination of the Java tutorial from Sun & the 'Java Fundamental Cl***es Reference' from O'Reilly have really bought me up to speed so far. <1> jottinger: could be, never met the guy myself <6> I have <4> you just eat it ? <7> I find that no matter how I plan, I end up learning new stuff at 2am the day before deadline. <1> hmm.... Is it possible that my command send out on a PrintWriter takes too... Oh fsck it, I'll just add a wait loop. <1> YES YES YES... <insert maniacal screaming here> <1> how do you like this? My java program was TOO FAST for me. It did everything I expected but it send out the command and immediatly waited for input, which at that time wasn't there yet. <1> NOW I have to go back to my previous examples and see what those would have done 8-) thanks again ... he isn't here ... wolfey gave me a good hint on "flushing". <2> Can you set one part of a JLabel with one color and the other with another color? :P <2> that would be cool. <1> I'd say you can, not positive. But you should be able to dump 2 strings with control characters to it. <1> duh, RTFM <1> The JDK docs on JLabel point you *directly* to this: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/label.html <2> looks better huh? http://temp.corgrath.com/ces2.avi <5> Bouncy: for what it is, it looks fine. It's not my sort of tool though. I guess there are people out there who might like it <2> Ive just added mixed-color-coding too. looks good. <2> My idea is add a shortcut to the taskbar-shortcut-menu that starts this program. and you can easy start your program without going via Startmenu <8> I heard that 6 out of 5 idiots don't understand start menus. <5> I can hit <win>-R or <alt>-F2 depending where I am and just type what I want to start, but sure...if that's useful to you, go for it <2> so you can start "run" and just type firefox? <5> starting up a java app to launch programs seems a bit like overkill, but who knows <2> crap you could :( <2> even photoshop worked <5> yep <2> i hate you Gates! Stealing my idea!! <2> i hate you Gates! Stealing my ideas!! <1> smsie: even then I'd like the window approach best; multiple scores being displayed and narrowed down. <5> Bouncy: in fairness, Windows has had this for over 10 years now... <5> since 95 in fact <2> whatever dude. <5> if it's useful for you, then go for it...don't let my scepticism drag you down <2> it cant start all programs tho <1> sure it can. <2> unless you create a shortcut in c:\windows or something <1> lol <5> I don't recall the criteria it uses <1> it needs to be in your searchpath, thats all. <2> not PATH tho. <1> if its not in the path just use a direct path or edit the searchpath. <2> anyway, if you want to start firefox for the first time you have to type all SEVEN characters. <5> it's much handier in Linux, since most all programs are in the search path <5> in windows it's less easy, but not a big problem <5> Bouncy: I don't type particularly fast (about 40wpm maybe)...I can't say that typing 7 characters is a big issue to me :) <5> but then I'm insane, I type all my code rather than use drag and drool tools <5> I realise that using a keyboard is a dying art. Your tool will no doubt be useful to many <1> lol <1> I yell it all into my mic driving my gf crazy. JVRP ;) Java Voice Reconition Programming :) <5> Dasher is pretty good for writing java with a mouse if you feed it enough code to train <5> if I wanted to write java with a mouse though, I'd be using jbuilder or similar <2> check this baby out! http://temp.corgrath.com/ces5.avi <5> wher eis it getting the list of startables from? <8> I think the text file programming languages will die, but I don't think we can mix them in the meantime. <5> rickety: I sincerely doubt they'll die in my lifetime :) <8> smsie: I bet all those HTML editing people dreaded FrontPage appearing. <5> rickety: why? Frontpage is what it is. I wouldn't use it, but then I'm insane. I write html in a text editor <5> I don't have much feeling towards frontpage one way or the other. I don't use it, but I don't care if someone else does <8> Yeah, but if frontpage didn't exist, there'd be a market for HTML writers. <5> rickety: there is, a huge market. Web design is about the design far more than it is about the writing html. That was always the case <8> Except there are server-side aspects to get in the way. <5> not really <8> And now the non-techies can do HTML. <5> that's still a coder's domain <5> what you're saying is (essentially) "it's a shame that tools like paint shop pro has put artistic people out of work" <5> it's not true <5> a tool is a tool <5> web design is done by designers. If Frontpage is a more useful tool to them than vi, great! Personally I'll stick to using a text editor, but then I'm not a web designer <8> No, but you could say that it's a shame that PSP has put the manual labourers who colour in the Simpson's still frames out in Taiwan out of business. <5> why is that a shame? <8> It isn't, but it's closer to what I was saying than what you said is.
