<0> :P
<1> yeah, i tell the client i need 2 weeks to migrate my mind from delphi to java
<2> strange I didn't hear the spurs clinking
<0> "migrating" from Delphi to Java might take you an awfull longer time. While there are things in which they're somewhat similiar there is also quite a big difference here and there.
<3> nah
<3> they are very much similar
<0> Rob_Uknow: hmm, I dunno. While the syntax and such may look similiar (a bit like C#) I think the whole approach differs.
<3> I've done delphi and java development
<4> delphi...we have a ****wit at work who lost our delphi 7 cd. and on top of that borland was quite capable of sending us delphi 8 cds as the result of a misunderstanding, and are unable to send us a delphi 7 pro cd - because they do not have them in stock any longer.
<2> Lion-O it depends on ability and on previous other knowledge, we no nothing of those, so can't say how long it will take freemand. But to take a contract in a field you don't yet know is unprofessional in my oppinion and is one of the reasons the industry gets such a bad name
<4> so much for delphi...i guess it's a good thing borland sets it free, as long as it doesn't day on the way out into relative freedom.
<0> calchas: aye. Hence the 'might take longer'. The reason why I think it'll take longer than this is the whole approach being taken.
<2> also depends on the project
<0> calchas: very true.
<2> freemand out of curiosity what is the project?

<1> mmmm, it's secret but i can tell you its about interfacing with smart card (just about calling activex) from java
<3> oh dear
<3> then you're doomed
<1> i've done many activex connection with delphi/vb and other, but not with java
<3> you might want to checkout the java combridge (jacob) project
<4> see integration section at faq.
<3> ibm also offers a way to call activex from java
<1> is that about activex interfacing?
<4> esp. that project for delphi-vs-jni
<5> activex is world's most prominent Security Hole
<5> nobody can ever beat it
<5> go Billie
<1> yeah, but the hardware only give activex method for interfacing
<0> so why chose Java I wonder?
<1> coz client know that activex is unsecure, so they hire us to secure it with java, at least more secore than not at all
<4> securing activex with java, oh lawdee...
<0> I don't think I want to try and grasp that logic :P
<4> and here you are, java and security expert, asking the other experts on irc about it...
<0> lol
<4> erh, end
<1> any sugestion? what else, we cannot make SDK from the hardware
<5> LOOL
<3> what is he saying?
<4> freemand: what's the smartcard for?
<1> reading some card to identify their consument
<5> freemand: jni <-> C <-> activex.
<1> all SDK from the hardware are in activex style, but they give sample code within java, our client prefer java than delphi
<4> freemand: to do what? we did something like that and found that instead of using the whole browser nonsense we could have a local application do the user verification and then open a secure web browser connection to whatever place we wanted. my point is: without knowing more about this project, we are not likely to be able to provide good suggestions which go beyond your self chosen blinders.
<5> so use sample code
<1> Clackwell my i pv u?
<4> nope
<1> :(
<4> freemand: come back tomorrow with your boss and we'll have a serious talk.
<0> rofl
<1> heehhe, i'm retired right?
<2> how would we know
<1> Clackwell, ever done this http://java.sun.com/products/javacard/faq.html
<5> LOVE POEM
<5> SUSIE LEE DONE FELL IN LOVE;
<5> SHE PLANNED TO MARRY JOE
<5> SHE WAS SO HAPPY 'BOUT IT ALL
<5> SHE TOLD HER PAPPY SO.
<5> PAPPY TOLD HER, SUSIE GAL,
<5> YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER.
<3> dont' do that
<5> I'D JUST AS SOON YO' MA DON'T KNOW,
<5> BUT JOE IS YO' HALF BROTHER.
<5> SO SUSIE PUT ASIDE HER JOE
<1> ?
<2> accepted :(
<3> as is
<4> freemand: no. we ordered stuff from wibu and interfaced with that in a native program. it did the handshaking/login on the remote site, via https, etc. pp. and fed the url into the local web browser. voil secure.
<1> hmm, any experience which can share with us about smart card with java?
<4> freemand: i don't understand what your problem has to do with javacards to be quite honest. i'd think a security token kind of thing like that from wibu or aladdin would do perhaps.
<4> think of your bank cards. are they javacards? very likely no. if they are javacards, are the java features used? very unlikely. just give the user a p***word and his security token and you're set, in such a setting.
<1> my client already have license for javacards they lack of programmer, so they contact us to do their project
<4> ahahahah

<4> sounds like he got what he deserves with you then. :)
<5> ::)
<1> i'm blind with java, but we'll try this as our pilot project with java, no matter how secure or functional is it, at first
<2> yeee haaawww
<2> rope-em and brand-em
<0> uh oh, thats my cue to hide ;)
<6> salam

<3> you should celebrate each milestone
<5> Rob_Uknow: i do:)
<5> i even share with you guys:P
<7> I sometimes announce Bug Fixed!
<3> you make bugs?
<7> Yes, and sometimes I fix them too.
<5> Rob_Uknow: i really hope to get it to java.net ;)
<5> my child...
<5> :)
<3> I have a project on sourceforge.net
<5> impress me:)
<9> wolfey: why?
<5> jottinger: why what?
<5> jottinger: java.net ?
<5> or impress thing?
<5> :)
<3> epesh
<9> I think I have five on java.net
<5> i have one i havent even submited any code although prototype is done
<5> havent had will to clean it up a bit
<5> opensource.. means.. everyone sees.. how lousy...you ...are
<5> it was RMI layer over postgres... xml structure, gui editing of database structure, then automated editing of records of given table
<7> Opensource typically means people don't want to see your source.
<5> got best score at Information Systems
<7> They only want to read it if it's closed source.
<5> rickety: OH? GREAT:)
<5> ahh.)
<5> rickety: now i see:)
<5> Rob_Uknow: you have that bot running?

<5> lol multitasking @ cnn
<12> salam
<0> A socket (java.net.Socket) can be used for input and output alike, isn't that right? I'm creating one and I receive input but for reasons I cannot grasp at this moment it simply stalls the moment I tried to send out a command (while it should trigger more input).
<5> look
<5> if you just read, it blocks until it receives data
