<2> also VERY occasionally beacuse of boot order changes or other bios stuff, grub will see the drives in a different order outside of a running linux, so this lets you check it EXACTLY as grub sees it at boot

<2> if none of that works, you might have deleted boot after something important, in which case boot to the livecd again, chroot, re-emerge grub, re-copy the kernel from arch/i386/etc just in case, re-check/edit the grub.conf file and re-install grub (like in the handbook) ... that should cover EVERYTHING
