<10> from memory i EITHER had to (to install on a similar grumpy machine) a.) use a 2.4 kernel, b.) change some of the boot options to not scan for raid etc, c.) err.. its late... i forgot c
<10> err.. rephrase point 1... on the livecd (at least the old one i use) gentoo is 2.4 kernel and gentoo-smp is 2.6 ... note also that this is ONLY the kernel used for the installing, not for the real system
