<10> yeah hep... this years plan seems to be working so far... AND i'm gonna stay on the pulse so i can guide it back if it starts to run off track....
<9> i'm a student again ;)
<7> oh my
<10> yeah... an average 40 hours week won't do much more than $500 IF i can find 5 days of work.... but remember this is australian money....

<12> hardware is a Compaq Proliant DL380 G1, dual 800, 2gb ram, scsi
<12> it says
<12> SQUASHFS error: Unable to read page, block <numbers>
<12> SQUASHFS error: zlub_fs returned unexpected result <numbers>
<12> that *alot*
<12> and under that
<12> kernel BUG at <bad filename>:51201

<12> invalid operarnd: 0000 (#1)
<12> PREEMPT SMP
<12> and then a ****load of modules
<12> any clue?
<10> when you try to boot the livecd ?
<10> sorry... NOW i've scrolled up
<10> k... umm... that is the one with the bios-on-a-disk ?
<10> ie. you NEED a disk to change bios settings
<12> the one?
<12> eh
<12> iirc, all compaq servers have the bios on disk
<12> but yeah, you need the smartstart cd or flop to change crap
<10> ahh... k... umm... have you tried whatever it is you type at the prompt to get a 2.4 kernel ?
<10> the non-smp one i think
<10> from memory i EITHER had to (to install on a similar grumpy machine) a.) use a 2.4 kernel, b.) change some of the boot options to not scan for raid etc, c.) err.. its late... i forgot c
<10> err.. rephrase point 1... on the livecd (at least the old one i use) gentoo is 2.4 kernel and gentoo-smp is 2.6 ... note also that this is ONLY the kernel used for the installing, not for the real system
<3> hi yo~
<10> Psych, aiight ?
<3> theBear: talk to me like that.... why i outta....
<7> yeah nothin wrong with usin a 2.4 kernel
<1> a 2.4 is fine...
<1> but mind you... some still use 2.2
<10> mmm.... it does have advantages on "antiquicated" hardware (much less mem etc) BUT i wouldn't use it on a modern system.... all this fancy 2.6 stuff i like alot with the scheduling and the drivers etc etc....
<12> theBear: hm, ok
<13> I have like really slow disk access on this box. it's a new SATA drive. seems like disk speed is just pathetic.

<16> how do i get emerge to install from a tarball?
<7> say that again phase_
<16> ive got the gcc-4.0.2 tarball
<16> how do i get emerge to recognize it?
<7> you want portage to build an app from a tarball?
<16> i synced emerge
<16> and it didnt give me the most updated gcc
<7> you have to create an ebuild
<16> so. yeah
<7> which is not anything i can help you with
<16> cant i just be lazy and install from the source?
<16> without portage?
<1> make the ebuild
<1> it's even easier
