<3> yeah right
<5> Then who cares?
<5> :)
<3> investors
<3> i guess
<9> Good morning
<9> :)
<5> Morning.
<9> Whats a good DHCP lease time to use on a DHCP server that is in a router that probably gets restarted more then it needs to?
<10> never expire?
<2> T9k839 you're looking especially shagworthy today.
<9> I don't know about never.
<9> If I reset the router computers start hopping on each others ip adresses
<9> since the router starts over at 192.168.1.100
<2> Waiter, my soup's got a mutated clone in it.
<5> Interesting.
<3> think ive got mine at the house set for a week
<3> i dont understand why the router rebooting affects your leases though
<9> well ok.
<9> Everyone computer thinks they have a lease for like 2 weeks
<9> the router gets reset and doesn't remember those leases
<3> thats pretty lame
<9> so the first computer to ask gets put on 192.168.2.100
<3> maybe you should run dhpc on another box

<9> pissing off another computer thats still go time left on 192.168.2.100
<9> oh yea sorry my router is on 192.168.2.1
<9> dhcp server=Linksys(WRT54G)
<3> so im thinking you should run dhcpd on a more stabe machine, and one that actually remembers the leases it hands out
<9> :)
<9> I know.
<0> :o)
<9> I'm thinking force every one to renew their leases at 60mins an poof the worst a host can be aquating on some one else adress is 30 minutes.
<9> I use static IPs for my self so I never see this. But other networks seem to run into this problem.
<3> that would work
<3> oh if its a wrt54g, why dont you put another firmware on it?
<9> yea I hate the politics of a linsys router that isn't very flexible.
<9> you mean like sev$oft or OpenWRT?
<3> something like that yeah
<9> These routers can be bricked just updating the real linksys firmware. So I'm hesitent to put any firmware on.
<9> Plus I want to get a feel for iptables first.
<11> crc use fwbuilder
<11> it rocks!
<3> next recomendation
<3> www.ipcop.org
<9> Theres alot of stuff I wish was better documented in OpenWRT
<9> it looks like a good tool but the scant documentation leaves me feeling skeptical.
<9> I'm thinking about growing a pair and turning my old P=III 566Mhz into a router.
<3> i gave my linksys to my parents and switched to ipcop
<3> ipcop!
<3> you can do traffic shaping with it too
<2> hay t9k705
<3> put three nics in it and you have have a seperated wireless network
<3> put a 4th in, and have a dmz network
<5> I want to reduce the amount of computers I have running.
<5> I pay like 70+ bucks a month in electricity.
<3> i feel you pinky
<3> i still need to drop my sme box
<9> I want to increase the amount of PCs I'm running so I can learn more about networking. And its high time I built a router out of an old PC.
<3> im probably paying about the same just for the computers
<5> I have 4 running at all times...
<9> You know it'd be cool if we could just turn a PC into a cisco router complete with IOS and the cli. :)
<9> I can't afford the real hardware.
<3> ive got firewall, sme, sparc, workstation, second workstation, fiance's workstation
<9> I want a mac.
<9> Just so I can have one
<9> I wish people would throw away hardware more often these days.
<3> the sparc uses enough power for 4 computers :(
<3> two 650watt psu's
<9> I'll be lucky if I can find a half used spool of Cat-5 in a dumpster these days.
<5> ...
<3> people dont just throw away good gear
<3> it gets scavenged by people in the know
<9> they used too. Especially government sites
<9> not as much though.
<3> gov't has to properly destroy equipment
<9> When they upgraded from 386s to 486s they throw out all their 386 boards straight to the dumpster.
<3> when i was with usps, we sent tons of gear to 'MDC Topeka'
<9> back in 90
<3> for destruction
<3> i managed to get my hands on something here and there
<3> but anything cool that had a serial number was recorded
<9> well hard drives don't get thrown away but the Mother boards CPUs and memory were. I remember hearing they just throw them out to save on inventory documentation. IE throw it away and you don't have to bother filling out the paper work to put it in storage or auction.
<3> we never threw anything away
<9> the governments a little more trim though. Plus I don't know anyone who works on base anymore. :(
<3> it either went out to destruction, or it went the 'the warehouse.' where it would sit for 9 months and get auctioned off by the pallet
<7> arg
<7> dbmail is kicking my ***!
<9> Lets see I have an old Cisco 827 which appears to be an ADSL router. I can get to the command line interface but its useless as need a eth to eth router
<9> I had another that was an ISDN router but again I would have to buy a $200 eth expansion card to actually play with it. Plus I had to snag Serial to Roll over adapter. >:|
<3> d'oh
<9> Looks like back in the day people wanted the router to handle WAN links pyshical conenction directly. IE having the ADSL modem or ISDN (What ever their modem is called) build into the router with no extra eth port to turn into a wan link.
<9> another thing I find odd is they don't just put a plan serial port on the console port. These turkeys use RJ-45 and excpect you to make a roll over cable then find an adapter.
<7> crc you need a 2611
<9> yea where can I find one of those nice and cheap.
<7> egay
<7> I have one
<7> that's where I bought it from
<9> how much?
