<6> Greetings,
<6> when i'm about to extract stage3 where do i extract ?
<6> /mnt/gentoo ?
<7> just found out my server was stitting underneat a leak
<8> |Jeroen|: a leak as roof leak?
<7> yeah
<7> well its in the cellar
<7> i blowdried it and it seems to run again :-)
<7> hope the mobo isn't ****ed now
<8> let's just hope that there wasn't too much mineral and alike...
<9> hey guys.. I'd really appreciate some help.. recompiled my kernel yesterday, upon reboot got kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try pasing init= option to the kernel. No matter what I tried I couldn't figure out what caused the error, so this morning I backed up my .config, then deleted and started fresh. Followed the handbook for what I would NEED, then added support for my sound card and capture card. Upon
<9> reboot I get the same kernel panic.. can anybody PLEASE help?
<8> look higher
<8> look at the first error
<9> that's the first error that I actually see during the bootup.. but I may miss something as it's scrolling.. I can still boot with my old kernel, is there a log from this boot attempt that I could look at?
<8> depend...
<8> your working kernel, was it made using genkernel?
<9> no
<9> it was manually compiled
<8> do you still have that .config for the working kernel?
<9> I'm afraid not :(
<0> make oldconfig ftw
<0> haha
<9> G1dzz0r: not sure I understand
<8> G1dzz0r: oldconfig don'T take the running config
<0> no i know
<0> :<
<8> Sysace: check to be sure that your filesystem and all is compiled in...
<9> any other suggestions? Yup, filesystem support is compiled in.. ext2, ext3 and reiser
<7> device drivers for sata or scsi ?
<9> no sata or scsi equipment in the box
<7> ah
<7> mhz
<7> well you can always start the kernel config from scratch
<9> |Jeroen| that's what I thought I did this morning.. I backed up my .config to another directory, then deleted it and spent a half hour setting kernel config again and re-compiling, same panic
<7> mhh ic
<9> I'm sure there's probably another error on boot, but it's scrolling too fast for me to see it
<7> scroll up
<7> with shift-pageup
<9> can I do that after the kernel panic?
<7> or doesn't that work anymore after panic
<0> shift+page up
<7> dunno
<9> will try..

<7> or just look in /var/log/messages
<9> shift+pageup doesn't work
<7> and isn't there anything in /var/log/messages ?
<9> rebooting again to old kernel, will look
<9> can't see anything in /var/log/messages so I'm deleting it, booting non-working kernel, then gonna reboot and look again
<9> ok.. /var/log/messages is not logging anything for the unsuccessful boot attempts :(
<9> any other ideas?
<7> mhzz film the screen :-p
<0> read the helps in menuconfig?
<0> ..or film the screen
<9> read most of the helps in menuconfig for anything I was unsure of...
<0> or install window$
<9> film the screen.. lol.. that may be a possibility, but I doubt my camera has high enough frame rate to capture.. but I guess I could try
<7> maby u can attach a serial cable and log it using that
<7> dunno if that works default
<9> |Jeroen| how exactly would I do that? is there a howto anywhere?
<7> dunno it was just an idea
<7> i booted and installed a sparc once that way
<7> but it has that hardware coded
<9> k, I'll give the camera idea a shot.. brb
<7> gl
<0> hf
<0> :>
<10> =D
<11> that idiot went to bed and left his **** logged into that damn game server again wasting 137k of bandwidth.
<7> owtch
<12> What idiot
<9> grr.. this is getting frustrating :(
<8> games is really a bandwidth waster...
<9> anybody wanna have a look at this: http://pongomation.com/kernelpanic.avi It's pretty blurred, but I can't see any errors other than the panic at the end
<11> s'okie... router was rebooted with the new kernel 2 days ago, just haven't done any shaping yet.
<8> shaping is so usefull
<9> anybody?
<8> we can't see anything at all
<9> the clip is too blurred u mean?
<8> yeah
<9> I'm afraid that's as best and the poor camera could do.. I'm stumped now.. no idea where to go
<9> the panic error itself is too broad for google to help me :( and I can't see any other error on boot.. and /var/log/messages isn't logging anything for the unsuccessful boot attempt
<8> what is your old kernel? and what is the new one?
<7> mhzz can't realy read anything on the avi
<8> have you mounted udev?
<9> versions are identical, I just wanted to compile in kernel support for some new hardware, and eliminate some modules
<8> maybe you removed something that was required
<9> problem now is that when I tried compiling again this morning I did with CLEAN, and in doing so it apparently wiped the modules that the old kernel was loading, so now I can boot it but no network support
<9> A****aka: after all day yesterday, this morning I wiped my .config and started fresh, followed the handbook to include the required items
<8> there is stuff that is hardware specific
<8> you may have forgot some
<9> I took about 40 mins going through the config to try to make sure I didn't miss anything.. and I've re-checked again, still don't see anything
<9> at least if I could catch an error in the boot sequence I might have somewhere to start
<0> mr tea
<9> I remember somewhere a while back I read on the wiki about a file that can be tweaked to help boost booting time.. it listed ide and sata drivers that were compiled into the kernel, but I don't remember what file.. and if I touched it or not
<7> http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/3164/1/ thats a howto on serial consoles
<9> k, guess I'm off to try to make a serial cable.. that's for the help and suggestions guys
<9> wow.. ok.. I just reconfigured my kernel to change the "via-rhine" network driver to a module rather than kernel compiled, hoping that I would now have the module to boot my old kernel..
<9> then rebooted, accidentally choose the new kernel to boot, and it booted successfully...
<9> could that driver really have caused all my trouble.. ?
<8> build in stuff can cause lots of issues
<8> you may have changed the build in module loading order
<0> are the kernels of same version?
<9> same version
<0> ok
<9> the only reason I made that change then is because my old working kernel was loading it as a module, and when I did the compile with clean earlier today, it apparently erased the old module, so I figured if I recompiled with it as a module, at least then the old kernel could load it
<0> hmz
<9> but now the new kernel is booting fine :)
<13> BITCHES.
<13> =o
<13> I scared lenox away.
<10> crumbs
<13> lenox: =E
<14> hey
