<3> Does anybody have suggestions about recompiling libXpm for FC5 ?
<3> sgh(:

<3> What is the configure option to make a ".a" file?
<3> or possibly I don't understand .a ?
<4> Starting httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 170 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_access.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_access.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
<4> how can i solve that ?
<4> i just figured out how.
<5> can i get any help in here ?
<6> well I'm lucid, but I don't know if I can help. Just ask away mate.
<5> thanks m8
<5> well im downloading linux redhat
<5> i found mirrors , http ones
<6> ok
<5> coz i cant use ftp download (blocked by isp)
<5> so i got some iso files
<5> and dunno exactly if its redhat
<5> FC3-i386-SRPMS-disc1.iso
<6> well I just d/loaded and installed Fedora Core 5 the other day.
<5> is the the correct iso image that i need ?
<6> those are source rpms
<6> hang on ..
<5> sorry but im not much into linux :s im downloading it so i can learn it :s
<6> FC-5-i386-disc1.iso
<6> that was my first d/load
<5> it is redhat?
<6> just went through til I had all five discs
<5> i have the 5 discs on that page
<6> yes Red Hat Linux Fedora Core 5, the latest one. (corrections welcome)
<5> FC3-i386-SRPMS-disc1.iso 03-Nov-2004 17:11 563M
<5> [ ] FC3-i386-SRPMS-disc2.iso 03-Nov-2004 17:12 563M
<5> [ ] FC3-i386-SRPMS-disc3.iso 03-Nov-2004 17:13 562M
<5> [ ] FC3-i386-SRPMS-disc4.iso 03-Nov-2004 17:15 562M
<5> 4 discs is that it ?
<5> and the first one is normally bootable right ?
<6> yes, I needed 5 as I like to install just about everything :)
<6> yes
<5> humm
<5> one more question
<5> can u execute .exe setup files on this os ?
<6> I don't think so.
<5> humm
<5> okey
<6> but I'm new here, if you hang about ..
<5> msn messenger exists in rpm file ?
<6> you'll get someone who knows for sure about the questions you've asked
<6> not as such, you can use gaim. or kopete
<6> both installable.
<6> as far as your downloads go, I don't think you want the ones with SRPMS in it. I've never needed those.
<6> But I'm a bit out of my depth here, so you'd be best advised to wait, or pop back later if you can.
<5> aha 10x man
<6> np
<5> choo
<5> choon FC3-i386-disc1.iso
<5> or the first one i told u ? i mean wuts the diff ?
<6> the one you just said would be the right one yes I think. What's your machine ?
<6> why not grab the latest version of Fedora Core ?
<6> FC5

<5> FC-5-i386-disc1.iso ?
<6> I think that the discs with SRPMS in the title, have what's called 'source rpms' in them, which you have to build.
<6> yes
<6> that's what I did. I got all five, or .. you can just grab one DVD, should be in the same directory.
<5> yeah but i dont have a dvd writer
<6> just grab the cds. I think technically you only need the first two, but I got all five, 'just in case'. :)
<5> thanks man
<6> that's ok. good luck.
<5> i can download the first 2 , install fedora , and when im in there i can continue the others right ?
<6> well, if you d/load just the first two, then select a load of apps to install, you might find you needed the other cds, I as, ahem, did.
<6> so I'd just get the lot, then you've got more to play with. What connection do you have ?
<6> *as I
<5> i have a T3
<6> then you can get all five in not too much time at all surely ?
<5> yeah
<5> 1 meg per sec
<5> not bad :p
<6> I know it took me about 2 hours, something like that, maybe less maybe more, to get all five on a 10Mbps connection. Although the d/loads were doing something like 300kbps
<6> still good though
<5> yeah
<5> ur using linux at the moment ?
<6> yeah, Fedora Core 5.
<6> I have a server with Fedora Core 4 on it too.
<6> I guess you'll be wanting to do a dual-boot with XP yeah ?
<5> humm not sure yet
<6> k
<5> i basically use msn messenger
<5> will be fully functionnal with linux right ?
<6> well, it isn't available for linux like that. What you've got instead is something better in my opinion. One app is called Gaim, which is very popular, and does *all* the chat protocols.
<6> lIke AIM, ICQ, MSN, Jabber. loads.
<6> Another is called Kopete which is very good too.
<6> And no ads ! :)
<5> gr8
<5> and for example , dance ejay if u know it ? could work?
<6> it is. Real easy to set up too.
<5> really ?
<5> gr888
<5> lemme see
<5> languard ? could work
<5> ?
<6> I don't think so. There are plenty of sound apps out there for linux, I use Audacity which is a hard disk recorder. But stuff like Ejay is I'm sure just a windows/mac thing.
<6> Well, there are windows emulators out there, that allow you to run Windows apps on linux.
<6> But I'm not familiar with those, so you'll have to ask again another time or something.
<5> aha
<6> Cygwin is one I think.
<5> aha i c
<6> One thing I have learned while using Linux, and distro of Linux, is that you have to read more. But you end up learning loads more.
<6> *any
<5> what do u mean by learning loads?
<6> Because you have to read up on stuff to learn how it works, you end up retaining that information.
<6> At least, that's been my experience.
<6> If you want Linux to be exactly like Windows, you might as well use windows. Not saying that's what you are saying of course. :)
<5> aha
<5> i understand
<6> cool
<5> that means that you cant use linux as an alternative for windows ?
<6> on the contrary, you can, it just depends on what you want to do with it.
<5> well , basically , music , msn messenger , ejay , http tunnel , emule , languard network security scanner , and a download manager
<5> thats all the applications i use
<6> I was just curious years ago, so I tried a distro of Linux, and I haven't been without it since. I also use Windows too. Running Linux and XP in dual boot is a good option.
<5> yeah , dats hwta im planning to use
<5> but , i should install windows first or doesnt matter ?
<6> I'm sure Windows has to be installed first.
<6> I've always done it that way.
<5> aha
<5> choon , cygwin , dont u think its makin linux applications work under windows ?
<6> I don't know much about it MEeEeeeee. I've never used them, sorry.
