<0> Question for anyone still awake. I have used Apache on Windows for many years. But this is my first time using Apache on Linux. One thing I notice is when I edit a text file like test.cgi in windows notepad and upload it to Linux. Apache fails on the formating of the text file? I'd like to edit files localy here on windows then upload them to the Apache server. Any idea on a editor to do this or is this a diffrent issue?
<1> WhiteShep: maybe incorrect newline convention?
<0> What is that?
<0> Or perhaps is there a windows editor that I can safely use for Linux Apache?
<1> WhiteShep: it has nothing to do with Apache.
<1> WhiteShep: DOS/Windows ends lines with \r\n and Unix uses \n. text files have to be converted between DOS/Windows and UNIX. in your case, this is usually done by the FTP program.
<1> in FTP, there's a "ASCII" and a "Binary" transfer mode. for script source code (which is probably what your test.cgi file is), you have to pick ASCII.
<1> lots of FTP clients will try to guess automatically based on file name extension, but maybe yours didn't with ".cgi".
<0> Ok I see this would affect all Linux text files. Ok, I have the drives mapped between my Linux and Windows apache drives. So I can transfer files between them. I'll see if I can search out a editor that can save as a unix formated file. Thanks for the info.
<1> ok. using Samba?
<1> if so, then yeah, there's a problem here. an editor with multiple line conventions support is prolly the best way.
<0> No using Webdrive (a windows client that maps into the FTP server and makes it a drive letter in Windows). But i suspect everything transfers via binary (exactly).
<1> WhiteShep: ah ok. might be a way to configure it to do ASCII transfers for .cgi's.
<0> So I'll look for a editor that will save for both.
<1> WhiteShep: might be better to just configure your FTP client (webdrive) to do the conversion on transfer, that way the files will work correctly on both systems.
<0> I checked it's very simple. It just makes a drive letter. No real settings.

<1> ok
<0> Ok just found a program I'll try called dos2unix. Thanks for the info.
<1> but you'd have to run it to convert the file each time you upload it.
<0> Yeah I know. I'm sure there are some editors out there. Just haven't found any yet. This will at least get me running till I do.
<1> WhiteShep: for windows, check out scite
<0> Ok thanks will do.
<1> np
<2> afaik windows formatting works just fine on apache/perl/...
<3> hi
<3> Anyone ever configured for iPod video/audio with MIME hackery?
<1> SiD3WiNDR: not OK for the #! line and it shouldn't be done anyway; there are other applications then Apache and Perl on UNIX.
<2> sphex: hmm, you have a point
<2> (re shebang, not other apps, which shouldn't actually care)
<1> SiD3WiNDR: why shouldn't they?
<2> because.
<2> there is no real code overhead in supporting both formats, and actually all interpreters I used disregard the windows format
<2> it's a little irritating to see the linebreak chars when using an editor on them, that's true ;)
<1> SiD3WiNDR: there is a lot of overhead to support this correctly system-wide.
<4> hackety-hack..
<2> giddzah.
<4> \o/
<0> Sid: Well so far I have had no luck using a "standard" windows editor under Apache Perl. I edit a working Linux .cgi file and convert it to windows and Apache coughs up a server error and dies.
<1> WhiteShep: that's prolly the #! line
<0> Nope everything is exact between the two copies. The shebang is correct.
<0> Well safe for the formating between them. I'm not changing the files.
<1> WhiteShep: a DOS line ending on the #! won't work
<1> WhiteShep: but you shouldn't use DOS newlines on your Unix system anyway; they won't work correctly as text files in general
<0> Yeah.. that dos2unix didn't work. I'm looking at scite now.
<1> hmm well if you convert the file with dos2unix, then it should work.
<1> check your error log, there could be another problem
<1> WhiteShep: test your CGI from the shell
<0> I loaded a unix cgi with msdos edit and resaved it as test.cgi (dos/win format) and then ran dos2unix on it. It reformats it but Apache still won't run it.
<1> WhiteShep: try to run it from a shell. check the error log.
<0> Nods..
<5> good morning people
<6> hi
<6> Is apache 2.2.2 compatible with php 5.1.4 ?
<6> apache 2.2.2 could not start as soon as i added LoadModule php5_module "C:\webserver\php\php5apache2.dll" in httpd.conf
<7> haha
<6> ?
<7> haha ?
<8> hello. is there any way to ban a specific ip? i mean, not even to allow it to open a connection to the server
<1> juupan: gotta use the firewall for that
<8> uhm, i see
<8> and you know any server that would allow that?
<8> i thought there was a way to do it, using apache conf files
<1> juupan: well, Apache can "ban" by addr/host, but it won't prevent to open a connection to the server.
<9> he means use the router.
<9> firewall bad :P
<10> hi
