<1> _julian__, the good news is that I made pulseaudio work with a52 plugin, so I know what the problem is (alsa does not consider the hw device occupied, but it also fails to initialise correcly, leading to spurious pointers)
<1> the bad news is that my amplifier refuses to upmix it, as it always comes as 5.1 even if only two channels contain data, and for some reason the trailer I tried at least didn't play on the rear channles
