I'm a noob, unfortunately; I don't know where to start looking on how to repair that from the live CD. I didn't see anything in the menu. <anagramarama> sudo apt-get install links <darren> _jason, I've download the ATI file with the .run at the end to my desktop and on the ati site they say to type ./ati-driver-installer-8.20.8.run in a terminal window once I've navigated to the desktop folder, now I'm lost <bongshoe> is it at all possible to install onto HD from a live bootable ubuntu 5.1 disc? <_jason> darren: the wiki should tell you what to do <bongshoe> i know some distros can do that <darren> _jason, when I typed it I got ./ati-driver-installer-8.21.7.run: No such file or directory <kma> I need to install the kernel from dapper because of SMP problems. What is the correct why to do this? Seems like the last time I tried I kinda bricked my ubuntu installation. Is there a page with instructions or something like that? <ilba7r> anyone know of a pdf editor in linux. <redguy> bongshoe: you can do that from the DVD, you can't from the CD AFAIK <_jason> darren: in linux, . means the current directory. I have been having problems with my hardware before - I believe it's a faulty motherboard, and it's always been fixable when I pop one of the RAM sticks in and then back out again. Until today, the system would freeze occasionally at the bios screen, and only a reboot (with RAM popping) would get it going again. Also, sometimes it would freeze in mid-session, often crashing out to a screen asking for a login which never <ADC_> actually allowed me to log in. Never before now has it given me a GRUB error, however. I suspect it's because of all those unwanted reboots during sessions. That can't be good for the main hard drive. <_jason> pcek: if he follows the wiki it will be installed as a package so that he can always remove it if he wishes to <darren> pcek, cd desktop gives me bash: cd: desktop: No such file or directory <keiron> can someone please recommend an application that will let me see the GUI of one ubuntu box from another ubuntu box, like rdesktop? <_jason> slavik: do you know what it is called? it's probably in your homefolder and starts with a . <redguy> shadows: almost any nvidia AGP card could do that for you <kma> keiron: vnc? <shadows> redguy: okay <stalefries> darren: capitalize Desktop <anagramarama> ilba7r, IIRC kword can work natively with pdf <shadows> redguy: something from newegg? i don't even know what to look for <keiron> kma: thanks ill check it out <ilba7r> anagramarama, not if the file has graphics it just crash <shadows> redguy: i'm looking this up for a friend, personally i use ATI products that have open source drivers <slavik> _jason: nope <darren> stalefries, did that and it worked but the command pcek gave doesnt <slavik> _jason: how would I search for any file containing 'kooldock' in the name? <Noobhelp> u are making fun of.. me.. u say to go on linuxhelp they say to go at you!!! <ilba7r> anagramarama, i am using it for review purposes and am afraid pdf professional does not work even with cross over <stalefries> Sorry, I haven't been following that, and I just logged in. <stalefries> I just saw that you didn't capitalize. <redguy> shadows: once I had a P II box connected to a 21' with a RIVA TNT2 inside and it had problems only with some higher definition xvids.
