<phiber_optic> Escape character is '^]'.
<phiber_optic> RFB 003.007
<aquarius> phiber_optic, then it's either a firewall problem or you're putting in the wrong IP address on the windows box.
<gnomefreak> skr: did you ./file.sh?
<GeekToe> hey Apoll013
<GeekToe> Need to get 0B/10.2MB of archives.
<GeekToe> After unpacking 41.9MB of additional disk space will be used.
<phiber_optic> could it be rouoter firewall?
<Ben__> soundray: do i have to download and burn the live cd now or can i do this with my install disk?
<skr> gnomefreak, tryed but then it was "file not found" again
<GeekToe> is that what it should say Apoll013?
<Apoll013> GeekToe: that's fine!
<gnomefreak> ./filename.sh should run it
<gnomefreak> skr: maybe leave off the .sh
<phiber_optic> if yes what are the ports and protocols for configuring my router
<aquarius> phiber_optic, is the router in between the windows box and the linux box on the network?
<GeekToe> Setting up build-essential (11.1) ...
<GeekToe> bigtoe@cpc2-hatf3-5-0-cust75:~$
<GeekToe> what now Apoll013?
<phiber_optic> yeahh
<skr> gnomefreak, i have ati-radeon drivers that are .run
<skr> same think
<phiber_optic> But I also want to remote desktop from outside
<skr> thing
<troyfrew> ok i cannot get a boot loader to install
<soundray> Ben__, if d/l and burn is too much of a bother, you can try booting a floppy with smartboot
<phiber_optic> so thats why Im first trying inside my house
<Apoll013> now u have the compiler and the bin-utils u need to compile stuff....
<sweber> I have sound but when I create another user account, that new user can't get sound, why?
<slavik> going to try to get kde enhancements working in gnome (is it possible?)
<sweber> sorry in kde
<aquarius> phiber_optic, you have to forward a port on the router to the Linux box, then. I strongly advise you to not do that, though; VNC is an insecure protocol.
<soundray> Ben__, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SmartBootManagerHowto
<Ben__> soundray: unfortunately no floppy on my laptop
<jasoniscool> how do i install a .deb file? is it sudo xxx.deb -install ?
<aquarius> jasoniscool, sudo dpkg -i whatever.deb
<Cyorxamp> How do I mount NTFS on linux - do I need to get a NTFS package?!
<Ben__> soundray: but could I do it with the systemrescuecd?
<troyfrew> my problem : i can write to the hardisk and read files on it, but the boot loaders all fail to install..
<phiber_optic> oohh okk...
<jasoniscool> ah thanks
<phiber_optic> other way to solve this problem?
<GeekToe> Apoll013, how do I compile now?
<troyfrew> can i make a floppy boot disk for now and how would i go about doing that?
<soundray> Ben__, it's possible.
<Apoll013> GeekToe: short question, looonnnnggggg answer
<gnomefreak> the instructions on the ati site should tell you thow to use it
<GeekToe> D: Apoll013
<soundray> Ben__, the procedure in short:
<gnomefreak> ill brb i have to get to windows
<Ben__> soundray: can you PM me this is getting confusing
<GeekToe> I'll google then
<aquarius> phiber_optic, install a SSH server on the Linux box, and forward port 22 from your router to the Linux box. Then make an ssh connection to the Linux box (with PuTTY from Windows), and "tunnel" the VNC connection over that. There are instructions at the VNC site.
<Ben__> soundray: i'm unregistered so its blocking me
<sweber> I have sound but when I create another user account, that new user can't get sound, why? I'm in Kubuntu
<Apoll013> Basically it's getting the sources, unpacking them to /usr/src, reading the README, ./configure, make, sudo make install :-)
<phiber_optic> uff gave me complicated terms
<phiber_optic> im kind of new to linux
<GeekToe> ok Apoll013
<skr> Can someone tell me how to install .run file?
<aquarius> phiber_optic, it is a bit complicated to see your graphical desktop across the internet because you want to be sure that you're not doing it insecurely (so other people can't do it).
<Goek> skr
<Ben__> soundray: do you have MSN or yahoo or AIM
<Goek> type ./filename.run
<soundray> Ben__, boot anything that gives you access to the grub-install binary. Mount the freshly installed root partition from your HD to, say, /mnt. Run 'sudo grub-install --root-directory /mnt /dev/hda'
<phiber_optic> what ssh server should i install
<denver> am i mistaken or is gcc not insalled by default with ubuntu?
<Ben__> ok i'll give that a shot
<skr> Goek, i know but i got file not found all the time
<aquarius> phiber_optic, search for "ssh server" in synaptic.
<soundray> Ben__, this is ***uming your hard disk device is /dev/hda
<phiber_optic> and then how do I tunnel to use ssh?
<troyfrew> soundray: pm?
<Ben__> soundray: how do i see what the devices are labelled
<Ben__> soundray: im trying to get it working on an external USB drive
<aquarius> phiber_optic, see the VNC site for details.
<phiber_optic> surre
<sweber> I have sound but when I create another user account, that new user can't get sound, why? I'm in Kubuntu
<phiber_optic> thanx
<mephis> hello0
<phiber_optic> but I cant find ssh server in synaptic
<mephis> i have installed gstreamer
<keiron> I have changed the path for root and my user to include the apache2 path. if i sudo su root the include path is setup correctly. if im as my user the include path is setup correctly. however, if i do sudo su [command] the include path is wrong. is there somewhere else that i need to setup the PATH for when using sudo?
<lysis_> phiber_optic, openssh-server
<mephis> but i cant play my wma and mp3 files
<Ben__> soundray: and i installed the system files fine, but when it came time for the grub configuration part of the install, I told it to put GRUB on /dev/sda1.....now when I boot from the USB drive I get "Missing operating system"
<lysis_> phiber_optic, you can type 'sudo apt-get install openssh-server'
<soundray> Ben__, USB drive holding the root dir?
<mephis> any idea ?
<Apoll013> someone running a dvb-card in his box, maybe a Terratec Cinergy 1200?
<Ben__> soundray: sorry I dont understand
<GeekToe> Apoll013, says I can't extract to /usr/src
<phiber_optic> and how do i run afterards
<GeekToe> says permission denied
<lysis_> GeekToe, make sure you use 'sudo'
<aquarius> phiber_optic, if you click "search" and type "ssh server", it doesn't find anything?
<Apoll013> GeekToe: u goota be root... sudo -s will give u root-access in the terminal
<lysis_> aquarius, i told him which ssh server to use so he should be able to get it going just fine now.
<phiber_optic> it did and found open ssh server
<phiber_optic> I already install it
<lysis_> phiber_optic, so you're good now? =)
<mephis> hallo
<GeekToe> Apoll013, how do I use sudo in the .rar.gz utility
<GeekToe> er, tar.gz*
<aquarius> lysis_, yeah, I was just trying to encourage peolpe to use synaptic rather than apt-get :)
<sweber> I have sound but when I create another user account, that new user can't get sound, why? I'm in Kubuntu
<mephis> i cant play my wma and mp3 files
<Ben__> soundray: it gets more complicated than that...when installing ubuntu, I choose to repartition that USB drive and place the ext3 and swp partitions behind the existing partition which had just some music files stored
<mephis> although i had gstreamer
<lysis_> GeekToe, you can 'sudo tar zxvf <filename>'
<lysis_> aquarius, fair enough.
<Ben__> soundray: basically im pretty confused about the layout of the hard drive
<soundray> Ben__, the latter is not a problem, but I don't know if you can run Ubuntu off a USB drive entirely.
<lysis_> mephis, you need to get the mp3 codec.
<mephis> lysis_, it says i need plugins
<phiber_optic> thanx gguys
<phiber_optic> ill try to manage it
<soundray> Ben__, sorry, have to go -- back in 1 h.
<mephis> lysis_, what should i do
<GeekToe> lysis, is ubuntu based on another OS?
<Ben__> soundray: people have done what Im trying to do - which is to install ubuntu to an external USB drive, and keep GRUB only on that drive
<Apoll013> GeekToe: ok, i see.... u have a fresh breezy install... read about the 'universe' and 'multiverse'-repo's first and install some more packages..
<Ben__> ok thanks
<lysis_> mephis, correct. you need to install all of the gstreamer-plugins
<lysis_> GeekToe, yes. debian.
<Apoll013> !universe
<GeekToe> ok
<ubotu> To enable Universe and Multiverse see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/AddingRepositoriesHowto - Official sources.lists here: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/6047 (Breezy) or http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/6666 (Dapper) see also !easysource
<lysis_> mephis, read what ubotu just said about universe/multiverse. you'll need that as well
<Delvien> Hey guys im tired of it... How do i get to view movies from websites in Firefox ??
<lysis_> !tell mephis about RestrictedFormats
<Delvien> what do i need to install
<GeekToe> Apoll013, will apt-get install irssi work on ubuntu?
<Apoll013> never tried it, but chances are, it will
<GeekToe> ok
<xerophyte_> What is the best theme for Local Business Desktop, currently we setup with plastik could somebody tell me an easy to use theme and userfriendly ??
<lysis_> GeekToe, it definitely will.
<lysis_> GeekToe, you should look into xchat though. it's more user friendly.
<lysis_> GeekToe, and it's already installed. =)
<GeekToe> bigtoe@cpc2-hatf3-5-0-cust75:~$ apt-get install irssi
<GeekToe> E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
<GeekToe> E: Unable to lock the list directory
<ccc_> GeekToe: try "apt-cache search irssi" and see what's available
<lysis_> GeekToe, you have to do sudo . . .
<GeekToe> oh
<lysis_> GeekToe, anything that "root" would need to do (ie put something in a directory that YOU don't own or install a program) you need to do the sudo prefix.
<Cyorxamp> what do I use as <type> in the fstab for mounting NTFS!!?!?
<GeekToe> okay lysis_
<lysis_> Cyorxamp, i thought it was ntfs . . .
<Apoll013> Cyorxamp: NTFS (duh)
<Cyorxamp> Nope
