<ResizingNewbie1> I'm trying to resize an existing ReiserFS partition to make room for a new Ubuntu installation. It resizes file with resize_reiserfs, but gparted won't allow me to move the partition and sees it all as allocated (although mounting it shows the correct size in df -h). Can anyone help me here? <LjL> tecs: i guess making the two users member of the same group, and then changing the home dir's group to that, would be better <funkyHat> LjL, what PDA was it? <j2daosh> u only make enough swap for the amount of memory you will need... i have one gig but dont use graphic intensive programs or games so i rarely use more then 600m ram <Frogzoo_away> funkyHat: last I heard, disabling swap hurts performance badly <csb> hi what is a good equivilant of PuTTy for ubuntu? <graham> pdr: i only need a few programs/packages so would something like a 2gb /home and 2gb /var be alright? <dooglus> linux will run fine without swap until it runs out of memory <LjL> tecs: but still, *why* do you need to use two separate accounts? i'm not sure i get this <ResizingNewbie1> csb, Why not just use "ssh"? <LjL> funkyHat: iPaq 3630, Linux Familiar <deadcat66> fstab.. http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/7776 <funkyHat> graham, why do you want a separate /var part? <recon00> how do you install a MFC-6800 (printer) with driver hl7x0? <puiel> to prevent harddisk being flooded with log messages <funkyHat> LjL, cool, I'm planning to put familiar on my hx4700 soon :) <crimsun> Dreamglider: what do you mean? <graham> someone sed before to stop it from clogging up /home <csb> ResizingNewbiel: i come from a windows world. i'm not familiar with a lot of this stuff. i'm looking for a nice package that will let me telnet/ssh <graham> or ./boot <pdr> graham: graphical programs? /var is a funny beast, since that's where apt puts stuff temprorarily, and where all logs/mail goes, so that's definitely one you need to know what you're doing before separating it <rahul> hello guys .... <j2daosh> csb, u want freenx <recon00> csb: sudo apt-get install putty <csb> not sure how "SSH" works by itself <dooglus> csb: just run a terminal window, and type "telnet" or "ssh" in there <j2daosh> and if you are going windows to ubuntu get the nomachine client <rambo3> deadcat whats the problem with fstab <csb> they have putty for linux? <LjL> funkyHat: it worked quite well. i guess it works even better now that a few releases have gone by since i last used it <saerdna> recon00: putty? lol <j2daosh> ssh is basically secure telnet <j2daosh> yeah putty works too <puiel> ssh itself is the command <recon00> that's what he said he wanted. <LjL> funkyHat: Opie was way way better than X-Window for an interface <saerdna> gnome-terminal --hide-menubar <dooglus> !info putty <ubotu> putty: (Telnet/SSH client for X), section universe/net, is optional. Version: 0.58-3 (breezy), Packaged size: 271 kB, Installed size: 668 kB <LjL> funkyHat: in my experience at least <graham> does any1s audio beep when listening to music and typing in irc <j2daosh> if you want to port the gui (RDP) then get freenx... if you are just commandlining it... go with putty <funkyHat> LjL, what I've heard from being on the mailing list for the hx4700 port is it works great, apart from a few problems (like the integrated wifi having no drivers) <recon00> How do you install a printer, anyway? <Dreamglider> crimsun, i only see what i want to now, but i cannot hear anything on "line in" i have it pluged in to a ham radio but am unable to hear anything <deadcat66> I have a total of 4 drives, 3 are NTFS and I need to be able to see them and copy from them. <rahul> i know i am asking a dumb question :) ..... how to install a .run file i have just downloaded the quake4 demo and wanted to install it its a .run file thanks <csb> so putty is for linux too? <funkyHat> LjL, I'll probably be going for GPE rather than Opie <POVaddct> csb: open a terminal, then type: ssh username@hostname <deadcat66> eventually I want to convert 2 of them to linux <csb> i didn't know that <j2daosh> deadcat66, u aint writing to a ntfs <dooglus> csb: yes. you'll need to add the 'universe' repository: <dooglus> !universe <ubotu> To enable Universe and Multiverse see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/AddingRepositoriesHowto - Official sources.lists here: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/6047 (Breezy) or http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/6666 (Dapper) see also !easysource <j2daosh> unless it is a network drive with samba <crimsun> Dreamglider: pastebin your amixer output <pdr> one good reason to separate /var on servers is because it is one of the few things that needs to be read/write and it is quite thrashy and can cause unnecessary fragmentation if mixed with the more stable bits <GeekToe> Apoll013, so I just reboot into the ubuntu installer and it'll make the partitions for me? <csb> dooglus: i've got the universe. thanks <deadcat66> yes, i just want to be able to start copying across what i want to keep <graham> pdr thanks for the tip <Frogzoo_away> !tell deadcat66 about ntfs <LjL> funkyHat: well GPE wasn't too nice to use, really, though it might have gotten better... <Frogzoo_away> deadcat66: read pm from ubotu <dooglus> csb: so just "sudo apt-get install putty" <dooglus> csb: (in a terminal) <j2daosh> deadcat66, ... turning on write to ntfs drive that isn't on a network computer is not safe <recon00> csb: then type putty to run it <j2daosh> if you want to go ahead <graham> if i do a server install will it have apt-get <pdr> but yeah, for a home machine, having all in / is fine, unless you are davem <funkyHat> LjL, do you use Gnome or KDE? <GeekToe> er Apoll013 if you didn't see it... <GeekToe> <GeekToe> Apoll013, so I just reboot into the ubuntu installer and it'll make the partitions for me? <rahul> i know i am asking a dumb question :) ..... how to install a .run file i have just downloaded the quake4 demo and wanted to install it its a .run file thanks <LjL> funkyHat: KDE <deadcat66> read pm from ubotu? what do you mean? <funkyHat> LjL, ;) <Dreamglider> crimsun, http://pastebin.com/528824 <graham> becasue i want to be able to do an easy reinstall without loosing all my installed packages <j2daosh> dead... u can read from ntfs... but writing to isn't fully supported and can damage stuff <mythri1> deadcat66: you got a private message from ubotu a moment ago <rambo3> search wiki for ntfs deadcat <Apoll013> GeekToe: i was missing that .... what was it? <LjL> funkyHat: no but really, it's not a QT vs GTK thing here, it's just that 1) X is/was huge and slow, even the PDA version 2) the programs for Opie were simply much more refined than the equivalent GPE programs <mythri1> j2daosh: he isn't trying to write <pdr> ok, gotta go, got work to do <tecs> Ljl well the other one is for experimenting stuff <Sunflower> any here heard of paragon ntfs linux driver <GeekToe> well I have the disc burned Apoll013 so should i now just reboot onto the disc and the installer will make the partitions? <graham> yer <j2daosh> i have a 160 gig windows drive and 160 gig linux drive... i dont write to my windows... i write to my wifes computer upstairs and if i need it i will go grab it off that one... or just format to fat <Sunflower> that will read/write to ntfs wont it? <graham> its suposed to work when writing to ntfs <j2daosh> oh well if he is only reading thats fine <j2daosh> supposed to... haven't seen it used yet <Ng> LjL: X isn't huge and slow, although this is offtopic ;) <tecs> LjL well the other one is for experimenting stuff <j2daosh> <--- not trying to test it yet either <Sunflower> I have paragon ntfs driver but its a nightmare to install <Apoll013> GeekToe: yes, be sure to select manual partitoning when u come there... and think _first_, then press enter (old chinese saying) <mythri1> deadcat66: http://www.linuxforum.com/linux_tutorials/1/1.php <GeekToe> heh Apoll013 <GeekToe> I will <Frogzoo_away> deadcat66: did you not receive a pm from ubotu? <LjL> Ng: on a palmtop, and compared to Opie, yes it was <deadcat66> i got it <deadcat66> thanks <Apoll013> Good luck then <deadcat66> i got hit by a windmill. <deadcat66> thanks <crimsun> Dreamglider: turn up your 'Analog Mix' <rahul> someone tell me..... how to install a .run file i have just downloaded the quake4 demo and wanted to install it its a .run file thanks <Frogzoo_away> deadcat66: just run the script - it will configure all your ntfs drives for read only access <LjL> tecs: just make your "secondary" user be a member of your "primary" user's group <funkyHat> from the screenshots at handhelds.org Opie looks tacky and thrown together... <Frogzoo_away> rahul: I'm guessing just './xxx.run' should do it <Ng> rahul: sh /path/to/the/file.run or put sudo in front if you want to install it system-wide <LjL> tecs: i think that will be much better than making everything world writable <GeekToe> see ya Apoll013, hopefully I'll be back on ubuntu... actually, does ubuntu come with a built in IRC client Apoll013? <Frogzoo_away> rahul: you might need to 'chmod +x xxx.run ; ./xxx.run' <Ng> Frogzoo_away: nah, a downloaded file won't have execute permissions <Sunflower> unbuntu comes with xchat <Apoll013> C ya, Geektoe, and yes, Loads of them (irc clients) <GeekToe> ok Sunflower <GeekToe> okay, see ya, hope it works D: <rahul> Frogzoo_away: ng: ok i am trying that <graham> is 255mb the default for a /boot partition? <Dreamglider> crimsun, i have enabled analog mix on in edit > pref. but i cannot see the slider on the mixer <rahul> Frogzoo_away: ./xxx.run is not working <funkyHat> graham, 255MB is very big for a /boot partition... especially an ubuntu one <Frogzoo_away> rahul: 'chmod +x xxx.run' then try to run it './xxx.run' <graham> thats what mine is <tecs> well i mean i did it before, i jsut dont know how to do it again since i have a fresh install now. im getting no such file or directory. my folder name is tec.... can you please give me the code.. i t ried different variations it still wont work sorry ,, still a noob <crimsun> Dreamglider: use alsamixer or amixer, then <graham> ubuntu made it that way <Dreamglider> crimsun, i have alsa mixer <funkyHat> graham, it's not a problem that it's that big, it just doesn't need to be either <graham> ok <graham> if i make manual partitions how does ubuntu know where to put packages and kernels <Frogzoo_away> graham: /etc/fstab <ResizingNewbie1> Did anyone reply about moving a reiserfs partition? Someone just came to the door, I've scrolled up but couldn't see anything. <graham> Frogzoo_away, in here? <vodnik> how do I get precompiled binaries for older versions of software in ubuntu repositories? say I need vlc 8.2.0 insted of 8.4.0 ... and I am failing to compile it from source:-( <Frogzoo_away> sorry? <rahul> Frogzoo_away: thanks it installed but its not in the applications list <Stormx2> "RTFM is Interwebs-speak for "Repeat the first message". It is used when the message did not transfer over the Interwebs properly. If someone tells you to RTFM, be patient with them, and copy-and-paste your original message several times. Also, typing the message with capslock on will improve the chances that it will get through (similar to yelling at a brick wall, telephone, or foreigner). " <Ng> rtfm means read the ****ing manual, not repeat the first message ;) <jbzz> ResizingNewbie1: I strongly recommend making a backup before taking any action. Good luck.
