<gnomefreak> sorry sophtpaw you are dark blue on black background i didnt relize it was you
<persia> KillerBun: sudo aptitude install libapache-mod-php4 ( think)
<KillerBun> i installed it, but when i try to execute a php file in my browser, it tries to save it.
<liable> KillerBun: dpkg-reconfigure apache enable mod-php and edit the httpd.conf for the php bits
<gnomefreak> sophtpaw: is it a .zip?
<sophtpaw> hahaha, gnomefreak, 'tis me! gee that must nearly blend in
<gnomefreak> it does :(
<sophtpaw> i would immediately change print color or background color
<sophtpaw> yes, tis .zip
<gnomefreak> sophtpaw: unzip file.zip
<sophtpaw> archive manager managed to open
<midwinter> sophtpaw, do you have any idea what it is? seems for a game or something..?
<sophtpaw> yes, the game is Go, someone sent me a teaching script or sequence or something i don't know as i've not opened it
<arnducky> persia -- I've changed repos and dist-upgraded backwards and forwards in Debian, but never crossed to Ubuntu. I do know that (early) Sarge (and how do you find an old, but complete snapshot, since repos will be no good?) to Breezy *should* be possible, but that newer Sarge to Breezy would break Linux badly.
<sophtpaw> gnomefreak: 'tis unzipped but now need an app to open the .sgf ?? file
<midwinter> sophtpaw, a search of apt turns up 'qgo'
<midwinter> might want to try that or at least apt-cache search sgf
<gnomefreak> ahhhhhhhhh that im dont know :(
<sophtpaw> ok!
<arnducky> persia, I've tried Woody to Testing Etch, but ended up going back. I think you're right about stepwise, but it wasn't to hard to 'clean up' at all.
<persia> arnducky: You're braver than I to go back. Personally, I like the Ubuntu attitude of quick patches and integration: it makes my system run cleaner (if I give up a little control). Upgrading from a pre-Breezy Sarge to Breezy should work, but upgrading from a pre-Hoary sarge to Breezy might have issues.
<sophtpaw> gnomefreak: i wish everyone used Linux too. It aint the reality though. Others out there use .zip still
<gnomefreak> linux uses .zips too :)
<pl_ice> i do :)
<gnomefreak> cross upgrading is never a good idea :(
<sophtpaw> that explains why archive manager unzipped it.
<sophtpaw> Now how to open the files?!
<arnducky> persia, I'm running Dapper right now and trying not to chicken out (or have a mental breakdown) at each dist-upgrade
<pl_ice> u guys know a program that changes gnomes desktop images? ...
<gnomefreak> i would search for it on google
<Frogzoo_away> sophtpaw: double click from within the file manager?
<Frogzoo_away> !tell pl_ice about themes
<sword> any of you by chance moderate or are admins on a board powered by invision?
<arnducky> persia, do you know if it's possible to chop it back down to Breezy?
<persia> arnducky: aptitude is your friend: keeps most of the dist-upgrade issues away (not that my system works or anything :))
<gnomefreak> mental breakdown from dapper nooooooooooo
<gnomefreak> lol
<gnomefreak> arnducky: you cant bring it down from dapper to breezy :(
<foad> guys you gotta try this file manager http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/, it's freaking awesome :D
<sophtpaw> not sure what Forgzoo means 'within file manager' Seems when i do a box requesting the app i wish to open with comes up
<sophtpaw> i might have it sussed though, now
<hyakuhei> Ok, who broke the website?
<midwinter> foad, interesting..
<persia> arnducky: You'd have to go back across the C++ transition at least, so you'd want to remove libstdc++6-4.0 to start. There are a couple other transitions, but I think that's the most painful.
<gnomefreak> hyakuhei: i broke a few
<arnducky> persia, do you find it better than Synaptic? I only use aptitude for headless or initial installs w/o X11 nowadays. I find that I'm about 5 times as fast at finding and marking packages.
<Mythril> is there a good Ubuntu games repository somewhere?
<persia> arnducky: I don't use synaptic much: does it process regexes?
<gnomefreak> !games
<ubotu> games is probably http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=5153 or http://www.icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php and http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Loki_Installers_for_Linux_Gamers News http://www.linux-gamers.net/
<hyakuhei> gnomefreak: Im just getting connection denied from ubuntulinux.org
<persia> Mythril: If you enable universe, there are a few more games. The links ubotu provided also help :)
<gnomefreak> hyakuhei: that the only site giving you issues?
<saerdna> wheres the flashplayer in apt?
<foad> hyakuhei, same here seems the site is down :/
<gnomefreak> it may be down again
<gnomefreak> i dont use it :)
<arnducky> persia, all my 'custom apps' are in Java (which I built with dpkg as per Ubuntu wiki from Sun's src) and I thought nearly everything was binaries. What the deal with going back to gcc 3.4 ?
<persia> saerdna: There are three. Do you have the universe and multiverse repositories enabled? If so, try `aptitude search flash`
<gyro_54> Can anyone tell me the best program for playing WMA streams?
<foad> gyro_54, mplayer , ot totem (??)
<persia> arnducky: The ABI changed, so nothing compiled with the new compiler would work with the old libraries, and vice versa: you need everything to match. For Java, this is easier, because you just need your JVM to match, but it's still messy.
<gyro_54> Thanks , do I need a plugin?
<arnducky> persia, try it out -- there is not really much need for regular expressions with it's search UI
<saerdna> persia: dont know about the repositories
<gyro_54> foad, do i need plugins?
<foad> gyro_54, I just install mplayer and w32codecs, and it's working :)
<arnducky> persia -- ewwww. I don't think I have enough skill to have even a prayer. I guess I'll wipe an NTFS partition and dual-boot Breezy 9or tough ot out through another 2 months of intense debugging.
<Nameeater> !RestrictedFormats
<ubotu> it has been said that restrictedformats is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats Most of the formats listed here have been replaced by !FreeFormats
<persia> !tell saernda about repositories
<foad> don't know what kind of plugins are needed
<chmod775> !quit
<ubotu> chmod775: Bugger all, i dunno
<jebus> since i cant get ubuntu installed :(! i am gonna have a go at dam,n small linux
<gyro_54> foad, how can I tell Mozilla to use mplayer for wma downloads?
<persia> arnducky: having just tried Synaptic, I think the thing I like about aptitude is the recursion: when examining a package, you can then immediately examine dependecies and reverse dependencies. On going to Breezy ^ a reinstall is safest :)
<h2theizzo> warning: pointer targets in p***ing argument 5 of âgetsockoptâ differ in signedness
<h2theizzo> whats that mean
<foad> foad, somewhere in the options
<foad> gyro_54,
<Frogzoo_away> foad: any problem with fam.h missing ?
<gyro_54> foad, Thanks I'll go and look.
<foad> Frogzoo_away, you are talking about ?
<gaz-> in ubuntu is there a path to where my recycle bin is kept?
<Frogzoo_away> pcm file manager you rec'dd - i get error: fam.h: No such file or directory
<Nameeater> ~/.Trash
<persia> gaz-: filesystem/.Trash
<jetscreamer> ~/Destop/Trash maybe, not sure
<jetscreamer> see above
<gaz-> persia, ty
<gnomefreak> locate trash should give you that answer
<Frogzoo_away> foad: 1.8.8 ?
<foad> Frogzoo_away, what program ? *confused*
<gnomefreak> :(
<persia> gnomefreak: only if your trash is at least 1 day old (unless you want to wait for update-db)
<Frogzoo_away> foad: PCMan File Manager 0.1.8.8
<gnomefreak> i know i just relized that
<Nameeater> gyro_54: you might want to have a look at getting mozilla-mplayer
<saerdna> persia: how do i add the repositories you mentioned ?
<null> hi
<gnomefreak> ubotu tell gyro_54 about mplayer
<null> just installed ubuntu and X dosen`t want to start
<null> any ideea?
<persia> saerdna: Are you still in Gentoo LiveCD, or do you have a working Breezy now?
<foad> Frogzoo_away, I just apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev libgamin0, then compiled from source , configure , make ...
<gnomefreak> null: what version of ubuntu and how did you install it
<gaz-> ive just deleted a 4 gig file that i shouldnt have :p
<Frogzoo> foad: oh - it's in the repos - awesome, thanks!
<arnducky> persia, right now, I can't even get my /dev/hd? DMA channels to work. Hdparm is just ignored. And soundis jsut (&#$. ALSA and OSS seem to be installed correctly, but only works for a few minutes (at most) then produces ticking (interference sound like the buffer is stutering and a constant Xx miliseconds. A more cluefull buddy (op in Unet #linuxhelp) says it's likely a kernel bug and he's run every kernel from 2.1.x - 2.5.x. D
<arnducky> O you have any ideas about that. (Going to Breezy might be forced if I want decent DVD playback, sound and I/O) ???
<gyro_54> Nameeater, Can you tell me more??
<foad> Frogzoo, you are welcome ;)
<null> gnomefreak: 5.10
<saerdna> persia: breezy in vmware, testing around
<gaz-> is there anyway to recover deleted files?
<null> gnomefreak: from the cd`s
<gnomefreak> null: did you do a server install?
<null> no
<null> desktop
<Nameeater> gyro_54: if you have mplayer and the w32codecs, mozilla-mplayer should play movies on webpages for you
<gaz-> that are not in the trash
<gnomefreak> null: login at cli and try startx?
<null> I installed the second time.. same X starts but with errs. i can`t see anything
<gnomefreak> ahhhhhhhhh
<saerdna> whats backports ?
<persia> saerdna: OK. edit /etc/apt/sources.list to match the list provided from /msg ubotu repositories. This should give you the extra programs.
<null> they are a lot of errs. I put the resol. 800x600.. 640X.. nothing
<gnomefreak> null: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and set your video card and everything else to the right specs
<arnducky> gyro_54, I've noticed the order of installing mozilla plugins is very important. Codecs first, so that Mozilla can find and register pathnames or symlinks in it's registry is my theory.
<gyro_54> Nameeater, I have Mplayer working and w32codecs installed but the web page gives an error saying I need a plugin>?
<gnomefreak> gyro_54: you might need mplugger
<persia> arnducky: If you want your sound/video to work, you're better off with Breezy: Dapper has at least the udev change and the gstreamer0.10 change to cause issues.
<Nameeater> gyro_54 do you have mozilla-mplayer ?
<arnducky> gyro_54, I.e. if you have everything installed from official packages and it doesn't work try purging and reinstalling Mozilla last (easy).
<gyro_54> arnducky, how can I tell if mozilla has installed it. I can't see any list in the installed plugins?
<gyro_54> gnomefreak, whats mplugger?
<gnomefreak> gyro_54: in the address bar type about:plugins
<gnomefreak> mplugger is a mplayer plugin for browser
<arnducky> Mozilla is the browser itself, you mean x-mplayer plugin?
<gnomefreak> !mplugger
<ubotu> gnomefreak: I give up, what is it?
<Nameeater> gyro_54 do you have mozilla-mplayer ?
<arnducky> persia, what about no DMA for my hard disk controller (excpet the offboard PDCxxxx which just got a driver upgrade (after all these years -- heh))
<gnomefreak> Nameeater: its not called that :(
<Nameeater> gnomefreak: apt-cache show mozilla-mplayer
<persia> arnducky: I don't know. I remember seeing something on the wiki: give it a search.
<gnomefreak> Nameeater: to get it its mplayer-iXXX X=386 or 586 or 686
