<gnomefreak> its a midweight wm
<Frogzoo_away> blekos: use gnome if you're just starting - youll have least problems
<liable> !breezy floppies
<ubotu> I don't know, liable
<BiSK-8> hello
<liable> !floppies
<ubotu> liable: My cat's name is Mittens!
<liable> meh
<blekos> that's quite righ
<gnomefreak> its lighter than gnome or kde but still has the menu bar and alot of eyecandy for it
<BiSK-8> are there any programs taht i can get through apt get that let me create animated gif images?
<gnomefreak> liable: no such thing as floppys yet
<persia> liable: I don't think the current Ubuntu installer fits on floppies (although I could be mistaken).
<blekos> that is quite tru f
<liable> surely hoary has floppies?
<gnomefreak> nope
<liable> bah
<blekos> but somethings are more right in Kde i think
<saerdna> gnome is preferable...
<gnomefreak> liable: noone has made them unless for private use
<BiSK-8> are there any programs taht i can get through apt get that let me create animated gif images?
<blekos> apart from the design...
<tom^> Hi. I'm about to sell my old hard drive. How do I wipe/clean it?
<h2theizzo> i use xfce4
<jetscreamer> tom^: shred
<h2theizzo> with the nautalis file manager
<Hivemind> Anyone understand the nano editor? Pointedly how to save and exit from it?
<h2theizzo> w0rks streamline
<jebus> anyone have any ideas?
<h2theizzo> Hivemind
<h2theizzo> use the control keys
<h2theizzo> CTRL-O write file
<h2theizzo> CTRL-X exit
<h2theizzo> and so on
<h2theizzo> use pico its more easy
<Hivemind> h2theizzo: <3
<gnomefreak> jebus: start over and before you get to partitioner give us what you got we will get you through this
<h2theizzo> get er done?
<persia> liable: I don't think even warty had floppies: there was a netinstall CD, as far as I remember.
<Hivemind> one sec
<gnomefreak> ubotu tell h2theizzo about enter
<h2theizzo> sorry
<h2theizzo> i know about it,i forget,,, its a bad habbit of mine
<blekos> how can xfce be installed in ubuntu?
<tom^> jetscreamer, thanks
<Frogzoo_away> !xfce
<ubotu> somebody said xfce was a lightweight Desktop Environment that uses GTK. to install, "sudo apt-get install xfce4" or "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop". http://www.xfce.org/
<blekos> and after install it, can i switch back to gnome if i want'
<blekos> ?
<gnomefreak> no ubuntu version had floppies other than grub floppies that yiu made urself
<h2theizzo> blekos sudo apt-get install xfce4
<gnomefreak> s/yiu/you
<persia> liable: If you *really* want a floppy install, your best bet is probably to install woody, upgrade through sarge, warty, hoary, and breezy, and then clean up the mess.
<Hivemind> Now, lets see if that worked properly and I can sudo things!
<midwinter> !install
<ubotu> methinks install is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Installation
<gnomefreak> xubuntu-desktop :)
<h2theizzo> what?
<midwinter> that is a pretty comprehensive list
<Hivemind> ?
<wdh> persia, doesnt sound as a 'best bet' :P wouldnt recommend that to anyone..
<tom^> jetscreamer, "The following are examples of filesystems on which shred
<tom^> is not effective:
<tom^> Ext3..."
<wdh> liable, what is it exactly you want to do? Install ubuntu on a PC which doesnt have a cdrom drive at all? Or just one which doesnt boot from cdrom?
<saerdna> guys. screw floppies. shouldt it be possible to just boot a live cd, no mather what distro, linux is till linux.. and then wget the ubuntu install iso, dd it to a partition on the disk, install grub in someway i dont know and boot from the install partition?
<Hivemind> Yup, sudo works. Thanks for all the help everyone!
<blekos> could u tell me the difference bewteen xfce & gnome?
<liable> wdh: not for me. saerdna
<jetscreamer> tom^: me personally, i d/l the utilities from the hd manufacturer boot some w9x floppy and low level format it
<saerdna> wdh: i dont have a cd-r unit.. so i cant burn the install cd
<h2theizzo> they have grub4dos u can use
<persia> wdh: Do you have a better solution for a floppy install? I didn't think anything since woody had floppies. Personally, liveCD or USB boot using debootstrap seems better on modern hardware.
<h2theizzo> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Installation/FromWindows
<sorush20> anyone here having synaptic problems?
<arnducky> saerdna, lol
<h2theizzo> that right there will tell u how to do it
<gnomefreak> sorush20: dapper?
<jetscreamer> etch has boot floppies
<jebus> !sudo
<ubotu> By default, the root p***word is locked in Ubuntu. Look at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo for all information.
<arnducky> really easy for a n00b
<saerdna> screw floopies :p
<sorush20> gnomefreak: not dapper no
<persia> saerdna: There are directions for using knoppix at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Installation/FromKnoppix, and when using the gentoo livecd, you should be able to emerge debootstrap to get started.
<gnomefreak> oh than im not sure i know dapper is having apt issues
<liable> saerdna: if i were you, i would install base sarge with floppies, then copy the ubuntu install kernel and initrd and boot from that.
<buzzy> !wine
<wdh> persia, depends on whether you have a cdrom-drive at all.. if you have one, there are some other solutions.. but even if the solution you gave is the only one available.. i wouldnt recommend it :P
<sophtpaw> Hi! anyone familiar with .sgf files?
<tom^> jetscreamer, well that would be one way but I don't have a floppy drive :)
<arnducky> persia, Sarge has floppies too -- I just made some last month (then I went back to Woody cause even bootfloppies fro sarge wanted more than 32 MB -- heh)
<sophtpaw> don't know what to app to use to open it
<liable> saerdna: or try and just make a /boot partition, copy the instal;l kernel and initrd, and install grub from the gentoo cd
<persia> wdh: I have to agree - it's the only floppy solution, but a really poor choice for any real install.
<persia> arnducky: Thanks for the correction.
<wdh> saerdna, you could try a nice neighbour with a cd-burner.. of order a free cd from shipit :)
<sophtpaw> hello?
<sophtpaw> anyone?
<jetscreamer> tom^: w9x install cd, ultimatebootcd, ubcd4win.com (the last one can erase your windows hd well)
<sophtpaw> someone?
<gnomefreak> !anyone
<ubotu> probably 90% of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? <hint>
<jebus> i ordered from ship it a while back, never came :(
<jetscreamer> tom^: dd
<sophtpaw> gnomefreak: its you i'm talking to : )
<sophtpaw> yes, you!
<persia> jebus: It'll come: it just takes a while :)
<gnomefreak> last time i checked im not anyone
<jebus> well it wont matter since this wont install
<sophtpaw> hahaha
<sophtpaw> you are someone?
<gnomefreak> depends who is asking
<sophtpaw> sorry, i'm new to all this
<sophtpaw> does one have to beg for help?
<tom^> jetscreamer, dd as in writing the hard drive full once or twice?
<gnomefreak> have you tried asking your question?
<persia> sophtpaw: No, you just have to ask when someone knows the answer, and happens to be looking.
<sophtpaw> yes
<Tuxiscool> Wow, apt-get dist-upgrade can really take a long time..:)
<jetscreamer> tom^: beyond me. i just know it would work :)
<sophtpaw> ok, so i'll just keep asking and repeating the question
<arnducky> persia, also, if you have a newr copy of, just AFTER they froze it is when it became 'binary incomptible' with Breezy which was already out, so you might have to go straight from Woody R3 to Ubuntu. I follow your general point, I think, but also, why would you bother with warty and hoary at all?
<sophtpaw> hoping that someone who knows happens to read my question
<sophtpaw> does someone here know how to open .sgf files, please
<jebus> !live
<ubotu> Wish i knew, jebus
<arnducky> persia, err 'newer copy of Sarge'
<jebus> aww
<gnomefreak> ahhhhhhh that was the extention question :( no i dont
<jebus> anyone know where i can get the livecd iso?
<tom^> jetscreamer, ok and thanks. I'll look more in to my options now
<sophtpaw> gnomefreak: thank you anyways
<persia> arnducky: I've not reviewed the relevant policies for Ubuntu, but the debian maintainer scripts usually only handled stepwise upgrades: stepping too far could leave a configuration mess.
<saerdna> anyone using opera as browser?
<sophtpaw> the question was there fromthe beginning though
<sophtpaw> yeah, i use opera
<sophtpaw> rarely
<KillerBun> how do i make apache understand php ?
<AMDXP> install the module
<sophtpaw> anyone know how to open a .sgf file? please
<sophtpaw> they were sent as zip
<gnomefreak> sorry sophtpaw you are dark blue on black background i didnt relize it was you
