I need to set some permissions on some files, but there was never an option to set a root p***sword. I tried root with no p***word, but that didn't work. Anyone got an idea? <takedown> use sudo <Alex_BO> Hoobo, sudo p***wd root <Alex_BO> Hoobo, then you set the root p***word <owner> !tell hoobo about rootsudo <owner> !tell hoobo about root <owner> !tell hoobo about sudo <kalkran> !tell me about sudo <kalkran> Oh cool :o <Hoobo> thanks <kalkran> That bot is way too smart <owner> lol <hyphenated> it's been trained well <Alex_BO> !tell me about root <takedown> !tell me about root <kalkran> ubotu Please use private messages, like '/msg ubotu sudo', rather than posting into the channel needlessly. <ubotu> kalkran: I'm sorry, i don't know what you're talking about <kalkran> Pfff <takedown> :) <Hoobo> !tell me how to get rich quick <kalkran> lol <Alex_BO> !tell me about sudo <kalkran> I can't wait till I get my new computer :D <takedown> !tell me about apache <kalkran> *sigh* <hyphenated> kalkran: the most fun part about new computers is paying for a windows xp home license that won't get used ;-) <kalkran> ^^ yeah maybe it will... <kalkran> I still can't get games to work properly under Ubuntu <hyphenated> which ones? <takedown> !amd64 <ubotu> Bugger all, i dunno, takedown <hyphenated> enemy territory works _better_ under linux for me <takedown> !tell me about amd64 <kalkran> Err don't remember... Just removed everything except ubuntu... <hyphenated> but I don't spend too much time trying games that haven't got native ports <Mabus06> gaming is better for windows. <kalkran> Yeah thats what I thought, but gaming ****s for me anyway <Mabus06> I know you may have the urge to be loyal but that's pretty much a definite. <kalkran> My computer is too slow for most games lol <Alex_BO> HELLO!!!I've a problem with mindi.when i launch it, it says me line 2345: syntax error near unexpected token `|' . I've just installed it <Zom> Mabus06: ...cedega works quite nice now :) <Mabus06> Zom: you gotta pay for it though, so it defeats the point <hyphenated> I have and use windows for a few things, partly because I am forced to with some work related stuff, partly for itunes and partly for Civ IV <kalkran> !tell Alex_BO about | <Zom> Mabus06: Yeah, "gotta" <kalkran> *sigh* I'm bored ... :( <lampi> me too <Zom> Nooo! <kalkran> You mustn't eat me for I have the magic dictionary! <kalkran> ^^ <Alex_BO> kalkran, there was a bug in mindi <Alex_BO> kalkran, i have corrected it <kalkran> Good job! <kalkran> Hrmpf, how can I see whether I'm using Hoary or w/e? :P <Frogzoo> kalkran: cat /etc/issue <kalkran> k ty <kalkran> Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" <kalkran> And my kernel is like 5.6.12 .. ;/ <Zom> uname -r <Zom> :) <kalkran> 2.6.12* :P <kalkran> I knew about uname -r and uname -a <kalkran> :P <Zom> :b <Mabus06> kalkran: new to ubuntu? <kalkran> Yeah used it for like a week :P <kalkran> And already find it far more conveniant(sp?) then winblows <lampi> does somebody want to help me with my apache2? <kalkran> What's wrong with it? :P <lampi> something with the userrights <kalkran> Hmm? ;/ <lampi> if i make a .html in my userdir the other don't have the permission to read it... <kalkran> lol ;/ <kalkran> chmod it? <lampi> ... <kalkran> lol :P <lampi> i'm new :) <kalkran> Heh me too ;) <Zom> chmod <access rights> file/dir <kalkran> chmod 644 /path/to/html/file <Zom> man chmod <kalkran> iirc :) <lampi> the problem is, i have to do it everytime i make a new file... <Mabus06> change the permissions on the directory <kalkran> chmod the folder? <Mabus06> not the file <Frogzoo> anyone considered a cl*** action against MS for the b/w load for \\the constant probes from doze zombies? <Mabus06> you can do it with nautilus (the file browser) <Zom> Yuck, Gnome <lampi> apache2 has the rights of the folder, but not the permission to read the files :) <Tuxiscool> Where does apt-get cache its packages? <kalkran> From the repositories listed in /etc/apt/sources.list <Frogzoo> /etc/apt/sources.list <Tuxiscool> vi /etc/apt/sources.list <Tuxiscool> Oops <sword> any of you by chance moderate or are admins on a board powered by invision? <lampi> vi ?! use kate ;) <Hivemind> I have a question about sudo (I read the man pages, but I didn't understand that well). Do I have to be on this 'sudoers' list to use sudo? <Zom> lampi: ...nano <kalkran> lol <Tuxiscool> No, I mean, where does it store them prior to installation? <Zom> Hivemind: Yes <Hivemind> Zom: Yeargh, thanks. <Zom> Hivemind: You have to setup access rights too <Frogzoo> Hivemind: you'll see @admin listed in sudoers - if you're in admin group - you're good <lampi> in school we have to use vi to program.... <Zom> Hivemind: Like, you can add users or groups there <Zom> lampi: :b <lampi> this is not funny ;) <Tuxiscool> Where does apt-get cache the packages once they've been downloaded? <hyphenated> lampi: which school is that? I'll send my kids there, when I have a few <lampi> GOB in italy... <kalkran> hyphenated, lol <Mabus06> lol <sven_> #ubuntu_de <anagramarama> i was obliged to use vi too... back in the early 90s, once you get the bug it's a hard thing to giv eup <lampi> not at all <Tuxiscool> Anyone? <Frogzoo> Tuxiscool: /var/cache/apt ? <sven_> JOIN #ubuntu_de <blueblood> Hello, I got a problem with my laptop. My "special key" seems stucked when I log in. The key to access my numpad on the keyboard. So I cant type letter it I don't press down that "Fn"key. Whats up with that? When I log in it works fine. But after login, it's totaly f**ked :( <hyphenated> I have to deal with bare-bones UNIX machines on a daily basis, and the only decent editor on them is vi <Zom> sven_: Why? <hyphenated> so knowing it is essential. it helps that I like using it <Hivemind> Sigh, allright. I can't edit sudoers unless I'm su. Going back to the login screen says that I cannot log in as admin. <hyphenated> Hivemind: huh? <anagramarama> Hivemind: why are you not on sudo list? The default install user is automatically <lampi> yes, but if you have to copy and paste 120 lines about 4 times it is much more helpful to use another one... but its very helpful to us if we learn to use vi, so we can use it on every terminal <hyphenated> Hivemind: 'admin' is a group thing, not the name of a user. unless you created a user called admin at some point <Tuxiscool> Frogzoo: That's it, thanks! <Zom> Hivemind: What the hell did you do? :) <Frogzoo> Hivemind: if you can't edit sudoers - then someone doesn't want you to ;) <Hivemind> Hmmm, lemme try this one more time then. <hyphenated> lampi: vim helps with the copy and paste thing, with its visual selection mode <stiloman> list <Frogzoo> Hivemind: if you don't have sudo permission - you can't edit sudo to give yourself permission - that's fairly fundamental... <stiloman> hi <stiloman> hola <anagramarama> <esc>:120yy p <kalkran> Hey I'm off... Might be back later... Ciao <lampi> :) i'll try to use it a bit more than just if i have to <kash> arrrrgh <kash> why does a new kernel require Udev to boot, but udev requires a new kernel to be installed? <kash> it's a vicious circle - no way around.
