<18> stasislove i'm new to unbutu but i've installed nvidia drivers 100s of times. have you read the docs? because there might be something specific to ubuntu i'm not aware of. but the issue you're having sounds a lot like one i've had in mandriva. i'd make sure the nvidia driver is loaded. sudo modprobe nvidia. on some of my mandriva boxes i had to add the line 'nvidia' to modprobe.preload. also check your edits of config file.
