<0> linux Noob seeks ***istance to make logfile print to terminal every X seconds!
<1> how do i do that\
<2> shoo-shu, then, you boot the computer using the windows boot cd.
<3> gary_: tail -f is your friend
<1> is the windows boot cd called application and driver recovery cd?
<4> what in the world
<1> or the operating system cd?
<4> sudo: timestamp too far in the future: Mar 26 01:09:07 2006
<0> stansell excellent now i have a place to start!
<3> Nrbelex, have you looked on help.ubuntu.com?
<2> shoo-shu, the operating system cd
<1> okay
<5> gary, or "watch --int 10 cat myfile" if you really like pain
<1> so when i turn off my computer
<1> i turn it back on, i press esc and then put the cd in and then it should come up on that list that says all this stuff about ubuntu?
<2> shoo-shu, nope.

<1> well thats where i f'd up
<6> stansell: I did some google searching using the term Samba mosty and only got help for prior releases
<7> How can I set pcm to be my capture device?
<6> Stansell: which either didn't apply here or were wayyy to complicated
<2> shoo-shu, you turn computer off. turn computer on. Press Esc. Change boot priority in the bios to be CD first. Save changes and exit. The computer will then reboot again. THEN you put the cd in.
<8> how do i mount my dvd player?
<2> shoo-shu, OR
<0> yo nrbelex u need samba help for ubuntu?
<9> wd3, it should auto-mount when you put a disc in
<2> shoo-shu, when you boot the computer, does it show an option for Boot device options?
<6> gary_, yes
<1> no
<8> madpilot what's up? thanks but it's not.
<10> http://pastebin.com/622825 is the elive configuration that gave me hardware accel as opposed to the ubuntu http://pastebin.com/622827
<0> nrbelex breezy?
<6> gary_, yes
<2> shoo-shu, some systems have a bios that allows you to press something like F12 to access the boot priorty without accessing the Bios directly.
<0> ok i got a good resource for that
<0> 1 second
<3> Nrbelex, http://help.ubuntu.com/starterguide/C/ch07.html#sect-samba-server has instructions for smbp***wd
<1> is the bios the setup menu when i turn on the comp?
<0> whats ur drama maybe i can help u straight of the bat i spent the last few days stuffing around with it
<2> shoo-shu, k. then follow the steps I outlined before and see if you can get the system to boot off the operating system CD.
<11> hmmm, for some reason gnome will not show the splash screen and boot up
<12> I've just installed wine and need to edit some config files for a windows program... how do i access the virtual C drive that wine creates?
<2> shoo-shu, yes.
<11> i restarted into windows, came back, and now gnome is not loading =(
<13> hi. I've just installed timidity, and it's set itself up so it boots up as a daemon automatically. I don't want it on automatically, how should I unset it?
<1> okay
<2> shoo-shu, however, remember that if you do not fix the boot sector
<11> any way I can figure out whats up?
<1> will it say boot secrot?
<1> sector*
<6> gary_, Stansell - Thanks I'll check that out then go to sleep - Its about to hit 3 here
<1> or something else?
<4> hm
<8> madpilot i went to xfstab mount manager and mounted it then but i remember in ubuntu gnome i went to terminal and mount (?) for automount on system bootup.
<2> shoo-shu, with a tool like partition magic, you may end up with a system that will not boot after trying to install from the operating system cd.
<0> http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu
<10> god... can someone please help... I really could use it rigjt now
<4> what package do i need if it says
<4> [obj/grfio.o]
<14> do i want to "force" a umount to my home directory in order to recover my files...or would that be a bad thing??
<0> thats got nearly everything u need right there
<15> How can I install debian package?
<2> shoo-shu, I have not used the compaq system restore cd set to know if it overwrites the boot sector or not.
<1> no, i mean to get the computer to read off the cd
<10> http://pastebin.com/622825 is the elive configuration that gave me hardware accel as opposed to the ubuntu http://pastebin.com/622827
<16> how do i install FrostWire-4.10.9-1.i586.deb
<2> shoo-shu, I guess you will just have to try it and see if it works. If after install, it fails to boot up into windows, you may still need to acquire a tool like partition commander or partition magic to fix the boot sector and then go through the recovery cd again.
<9> !+frostwire
<17> frostwire is a free peer-to-peer application that runs on the Gnutella network, which can be found at http://www.frostwire.com/ note: the file /usr/lib/frostwire/runFrost.sh in the 4.10.9 release is in dos format, and should be converted to 'nix format using dos2unix (install the sysutils package if you do not have this command)
<1> k
<2> shoo-shu, best of luck.
<0> nrbelex http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu#Samba_Server
<0> direct link ;P
<3> Nrbelex, OK - good luck !
<1> :( i need it
<18> to install a deb file dpkg -i <your>.deb
<1> thank you :)
<1> for ur help

<2> np
<15> tyhank you
<14> do i want to "force" a umount to my home directory in order to recover my files...or would that be a bad thing??
<16> madpilot: how do i convert to nix format? is it hard to do? can i get dos2unix from synaptic?
<1> im sorry i dont understand much lol
<4> wow
<1> im just lost
<4> theres such thing as
<4> 32 depth?
<1> okay, im going to go and try. byes
<2> shoo-shu, not at all. come back if you get frustrated with windows and want to try again.:)
<2> bye
<10> sbartleylinux could you help
<1> lol
<2> interneti, I can try. what is up?
<10> http://pastebin.com/622825 is the elive configuration that gave me hardware accel as opposed to the ubuntu http://pastebin.com/622827
<9> heyjoe2, yeah, looks like it's in the sysutils package, like it says in that blurb...
<12> I have installed "wine" and it is working wonderfully. How do I access the virtual drive that it creates... need to edit a config file
<10> im not getting accelleration
<6> stansell, gary_, thanks again!
<10> and its a pain
<15> this says that i not have superuser privilege...what to do?
<10> sudo
<19> Snareguydave16, ~/.wine/
<12> thank you
<10> toni use sudo
<9> toni__, preceed your command w/ sudo when you need privs
<16> madpilot: i cant find dos2unix in synaptic, could it be called something else?
<15> thanko you verry muxh. :)
<15> not it's working. :P
<9> !tell heyjoe2 about frostwire
<9> heyjoe2, look for the sysutils package, like it says in the frostwire blurb...
<10> sbartley any ideas
<16> madpilot: how do i look for it
<8> madpilot does it matter if my dvd mounting point is cdrom 1? shouldn't it say dvd0?
<9> heyjoe2, just search for sysutils - that should work...
<9> !info sysutils
<17> sysutils: (Miscellaneous small system utilities.), section utils, is optional. Version: 1.3.8.5.1 (breezy), Packaged size: 40 kB, Installed size: 156 kB
<2> interneti, sorry, but I have very little experience with video configs myself.
<20> grndslm: is your home directory mounted on a separate partition?
<3> I'm really confused - nautilus has options to configure an SMB share - but you've still got to mess with smbp***wd and smb.conf to actually get access to the share?
<10> madpilot this is a long shot but could you help?
<14> fyrestrtr
<9> wd3, no idea - it's been a while since I ran a DVD on this system, and it auto-mounted for me
<3> !info gaim
<17> gaim: (multi-protocol instant messaging client), section net, is optional. Version: 1:1.5.0-1ubuntu3 (breezy), Packaged size: 814 kB, Installed size: 2148 kB
<10> http://pastebin.com/622825 is the elive configuration that gave me hardware accel as opposed to the ubuntu http://pastebin.com/622827
<14> fyrestrtr, yes it is
<2> night all.
<12> is there a way to turn on root priviledges permanently without having to do everything through the root terminal?
<8> Madpilot, thanks
<20> grndslm: you can re-mount it readonly -- unmounting it completely might cause problems.
<21> Snareguydave16: why would you want to do that?
<10> wouldn't recommend it..
<9> Snareguydave16, that would be a really bad idea...
<20> Snareguydave16: no, that's a very bad idea.
<12> lol... i see.
<10> any ideas madpilot
<12> well, i am just trying to access the /.wine directory... it this possible through the stock file browser or do i have to do it through the root terminal
<9> Snareguydave16, that's just a hidden folder - in Nautilus, just hit Ctrl+H
<14> fyrestrtr, i just did a lazy umount, and now i can't open gnome-terminal anymore...but i can still switch to a virtual terminal or whatever Ctrl+Alt+F6 is
<3> the problem is .wine starts with a "."
<20> Snareguydave16: cd /.wine && ls
<11> how would I roll back that libc update?
<22> fyrestrtr:
<14> this undelete software seems kinda old, what are my chances of recovering 75% or more of my data??
<22> I got the windows partition to boot
<11> I think it is preventing me from running any gnome apps
<8> how do i mount my cdrw to automount at bootup?
<22> the grub boot loader was COMPLETELY wrong
<11> could also be libcairo
<10> libc is ok as far as I know
<11> anytime I try to run anything based off of gtk, the windows fail to repaint
<11> i dunno, but I cant run gtk anything
